Mechanical Engineering requires a minimum 75% average in high school or equivalent qualification. Admission is competitive; students with 80%+ average are prioritised for merit scholarships.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

All international students must demonstrate English proficiency via a recognised test. Lakehead accepts IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, and CAEL.

Test Overall Minimum Component Minimums Valid For
IELTS (Academic) 6.5 Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking: 6.0 each 2 years
TOEFL iBT 80 Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking: 19 each 2 years (Institution Code: 888)
Pearson PTE 60 All components: 53 minimum 3 years
CAEL 70 All components: 70 minimum 2 years
  • IELTS 6.5 is achievable with 12-16 weeks of focused study for engineers from India; TOEFL 80 requires similar effort.
  • If you score below the threshold, Lakehead offers the Academic English Program (AEP) as a conditional admission pathway.
  • Component minimums prevent low-band trades (e.g. high reading + low speaking); all four skills matter for engineering labs.

Mechanical Engineering at Lakehead University FAQs

Ques. What are the key areas of specialization in mechanical engineering at Lakehead?

Ans. Lakehead’s Mechanical Engineering program covers thermal systems, fluid mechanics, materials science, machine design, and manufacturing processes. Students can focus on aerospace applications, renewable energy systems, or advanced materials through elective courses and co-op placements. The programme emphasises applied design and does not require a formal specialization choice; instead, students select four technical electives in Years 3 and 4 aligned with their career interests.

Ques. Can I work part-time while studying mechanical engineering at Lakehead?

Ans. Yes, international students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled co-op terms and holidays. Co-op terms are integrated into your degree timeline (typically four four-month work terms spread across four years), paying C$18,000-22,000 each. Many students work 10-15 hours weekly in retail or campus jobs to offset living costs, which is manageable alongside a four-day lecture schedule in most semesters.

Ques. What is the post-study work visa process after graduating from mechanical engineering?

Ans. Upon graduation, you apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) valid for up to four years. The application takes 4-6 weeks at the nearest Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) office or by mail. You do not need a job offer to apply. After receiving your PGWP, you can immediately begin working for any Canadian employer in any role, and after one year of skilled work experience (NOC Code 2131 for Mechanical Engineers), you are eligible for permanent residence via Express Entry or Ontario PNP.

Ques. How much does it cost to live as a student in Thunder Bay, Ontario?

Ans. Monthly living expenses average C$960-1,370 (INR 65,414-93,352) including shared rent (C$500-700), groceries (C$250-350), utilities (C$80-120), transport (C$30-50), and miscellaneous costs. Over four years, total living costs are approximately INR 31.41-47.19 Lakhs. Thunder Bay is significantly cheaper than Toronto or Vancouver because rent is lower and public transport is minimal. Many students reduce costs by sharing apartments and cooking meals at home.

Ques. What are the career prospects for international mechanical engineering graduates in Canada?

Ans. Career prospects are strong: 91% of graduates are employed within six months in roles like Design Engineer, Quality Analyst, or Manufacturing Engineer earning C$55,000-75,000 (INR 37.47-51.1 Lakhs) initially. Major employers include Bombardier Aerospace, Pratt & Whitney Canada, General Dynamics, and automotive suppliers across Ontario. After one year of work experience, permanent residence is accessible through Express Entry or Ontario PNP. Mechanical engineering is a high-demand occupation in Canada with projected growth through 2030.
