Brock’s master’s program in Computer Science is a research-based MSc that consists of one year of coursework. This is followed by preparing a thesis or project to obtain advanced knowledge in computer science and experience in scientific research. Research may be conducted in the broad areas of computational logic and algebra, data mining, evolutionary computation, artificial intelligence, algorithms, parallelism and combinatorics.

Computer science is an exciting, rapidly evolving discipline that impacts our everyday lives in innumerable ways. Graduate degree-holders in computer science are in high demand. Graduates from this programs have a wide range of exciting career options in industry and academia. The university’s faculty actively collaborate with industrial partners, which makes Toronto Metropolitan University’s central downtown location advantageous. It provides walking distance access to Toronto’s vibrant and rapidly growing start-up community, major companies, financial institutions and research hospitals.

The university's research advances state-of-the-art computer software and hardware design, theoretical foundations of computing, and systems development. Faculty members are engaged in cross-disciplinary research at the intersection of computer science and areas such as health science, social science, business and management, and other natural science and engineering disciplines.

A large number of high technology companies (e.g., Alcatel, IBM, Mitel, Thales, Cognos/IBM), research labs (e.g., National Research Council, Communication Research Centre) and Government of Canada departments are located in the Ottawa-Gatineau area. The technology cluster provides students with an opportunity to conduct joint research with the private and public sector. Graduating students have a large range of employment opportunities from research to development in areas such as designing new software security products, creation of computer games, designing animation software, building robot, medical imaging and devices and data mining and business intelligence.

The MSc in Computer Science emphasizes both academic and applied research that can meaningfully contribute to further research, industry partnerships and government programs. There are multiple research areas students can choose to study, and interaction with other disciplines is encouraged as many faculty work with industry partners and other departments at the University of Guelph.
