- Almost all full-time thesis students are fully supported either from major scholarships such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) scholarship and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS), or from Research Assistantships funded by their faculty supervisors' research grants. Additional support in the form of term-by-term merit scholarships and teaching assistantships supplement the student's income, in specific cases.
- Special Entrance Scholarships are made available to outstanding students, such as those winning an NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship.

- The general Masters of Engineering (MEng) degree in Mechanical Engineering offered at the University of Waterloo is a coursework program open to students who satisfy the admission requirements.
- The MEng Program takes three to six terms to complete (one to two years) as a full-time student or the maximum time limit for completion of Master's degree requirements totally on a part-time basis is fifteen terms.
- The MEng Program can be taken full-time, but students who want to remain in full-time employment can register on a part-time basis. The candidate is expected to be financially self-supporting.
- MEng students can also earn one of three exciting graduate diplomas in conjunction with the MEng degree, with no extra cost:
- Design
- Fire Safety
- Green Energy
- These growing fields of strategic interest to the economy are ideal for skills upgrading by internationally trained engineers and for professional development for working engineers.
- Only one graduate diploma can be earned in conjunction with the MEng degree.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- The candidate must obtain a pass in all courses credited to his or her program, with a minimum overall average of 70% (A grade of less than 65% in any course counts as a failure (F)).
- Eight, one-term Engineering graduate-level courses (or courses acceptable for graduate credit)
- Four of the eight courses must be from the Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering Department
- Two out of the eight one-term graduate-level courses must be taken from the approved list of core graduate courses.
- Only two out of the eight courses can be 500-level.
- Academic Integrity Quiz.
- Students must be qualified in IELTS or TOEFL to get admission to this program.
- An English for Multilingual Speakers (EMLS) technical/professional course is normally required for all students who were not English Language Proficiency (ELP) exempt at the time of admission.
Indian Student Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:
- Completed a 4-year UG degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
- Completed a master’s degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
