- PhD in Theatre at the University of Victoria is offered as a 5-years program by the Department of Theatre.
- The University of Victoria also ranked 2nd in Maclean’s top Canadian Comprehensive Universities 2019.
- UVic's Department of Theatre is one of the most comprehensive and immersive theatre programs in Canada.
- Here, students will receive hands-on experience in all areas of theatre, taught by leading scholars and theatre professionals in one of the most innovative teaching facilities in North America.
- Doctoral students may propose and pursue research projects on a wide range of topics from Greek tragedy to Broadway musicals, dance to opera, the history of applied theatre to the economics of commercial touring, melodrama to Modernism, a spectacle to social identities, indigenous theatre to theatre technology.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- Students must have a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Theatre, Applied Theatre, or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
- A grade point average of 6.0/9.0 (B+ average) in the work of the last two years (30 units) leading to the bachelor’s degree.
- Applicants must possess either a general knowledge of Western theatre history, from the Greeks to the present, or a strong background in dramatic literature or familiarity with the practicalities of theatre production; design, direction, and performance.
Indian Student Eligibility:
- Students must complete a bachelor’s and master's degree in Theatre, Applied Theatre, or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
- The minimum grade score for a degree should be 7/10 (60%), first class.
Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

- Two Letter of Recommendation: Letter of recommendation (combination of professional and academic recommenders) which includes information about the student, their connection with the person they are recommending, their qualification, and the specific skills they have.
- Statement of Purpose: This statement must describe your qualifications and the objectives of your intended educational program.
- Statement of Intent: Reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
- Official Transcripts: Applicants who have attended and/or received degrees from institutions outside the US must provide certified copies and certified English translations of transcripts or records of all previous post-secondary education and of all degrees conferred.
- Writing Sample: Students have to submit a sample of their scholarly writing which demonstrates a capability for advanced research.
- ELP Scores: Students have to submit their English language proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL, or other test scores.
