University of Toronto Bachelor of Science Human Biology Ranking 2026

University of Toronto is ranked globally but Human Biology as a specific discipline does not hold a separate QS, THE, FT, or ARWU subject ranking. The institution itself ranks 20th globally (QS World University Ranking 2026), 18th overall (Times Higher Education 2026), and 24th in North America (US News Global Ranking 2026). Life Sciences and Medicine (broader category) rank 8th in North America across major indices.

Within Canada, University of Toronto is ranked 1st in research intensity and graduate outcomes by Maclean’s and Globe & Mail university surveys. Life sciences research funding exceeds CAD 400 million annually; research output places UofT among Canada’s top three institutions in biomedical publications. Human Biology specifically benefits from proximity to Toronto’s academic health science centres (Toronto General Hospital, Hospital for Sick Children, Sunnybrook Medical Centre), where 150+ faculty researchers conduct NIH-funded and international collaborative studies.

Programme strength is reflected in graduate outcomes: 90% employment within six months, 94% placement for Bioinformatics specialisations, and median salary growth of 50-75% by year five. Medical school acceptance rate for Human Biology graduates is 35-40% (compared to 20-25% overall Canadian average), indicating strong preparation for competitive health professional programmes.

Key Insight: Ranking data is available at institutional and broad subject levels, not programme-specific. Human Biology’s strength stems from UofT’s top-20 global standing, Canada’s #1 Life Sciences research ecosystem, and 90%+ employment outcomes, rather than a dedicated subject ranking.

Bachelor of Science Human Biology FAQs

Ques. Can an Indian student with a 70% average in CBSE Grade 12 get into University of Toronto Human Biology?

Ans. High 70s average is the minimum for initial Life Sciences intake; Human Biology specialisation requires 80%+ to compete for admission after Year 1. Indian students with 70% in CBSE may be admitted to the foundational Life Sciences stream, then declare Human Biology after demonstrating strong grades in Year 1 core courses (Biology, Chemistry, Calculus). WES credential evaluation is required; official CBSE transcripts must be translated and notarised. Admission is possible but not guaranteed for specialisation without higher grades.

Ques. Is an IELTS 6.5 score enough for University of Toronto, or do I need 7.0?

Ans. IELTS 6.5 is the minimum required; 7.0 is recommended but not mandatory. A 6.5 score satisfies admission requirements and visa requirements. However, 7.0+ is strongly preferred for competitive scholarship consideration, professional communication roles in research labs, and future skilled-worker visa sponsorship (higher language scores boost Express Entry CRS score). If your target is admission only, 6.5 suffices; if you aim for scholarships or faster PR, aim for 7.0.

Ques. What is the total cost of University of Toronto Human Biology for Indian students, including living expenses?

Ans. Four-year total cost is approximately INR 2.00-2.25 Crores, comprising tuition and fees (INR 1.71 Crores), living expenses in Toronto (INR 1.81-2.38 Lakhs annually = INR 7.24-9.52 Lakhs over four years), travel, visa processing, and emergency reserves. Expected breakdown: tuition and incidentals (INR 1.71 Cr), housing and food (INR 7.24-9.52 L), books and transport (INR 20,000-40,000), health insurance (INR 5,00,000), leaving minimal margin. Co-op participation during studies can offset CAD 18,000-22,000 (INR 12.32-15.07 Lakhs) per term worked, reducing total net cost to INR 1.85-2.10 Crores.

Ques. Do I need to appear in medical entrance exams (NEET/MCAT) after graduating from University of Toronto Human Biology?

Ans. No, University of Toronto Human Biology graduates applying to Canadian medical schools do not require NEET or MCAT. Canadian medical schools (University of Toronto Medical School, McMaster, Western) require the Canadian MCAT (same format as US MCAT) or GRE, plus Bachelor’s degree, IELTS/TOEFL, and strong science GPA. If you plan to return to India for medical practice, you must clear NEET or pursue Additional Qualification Examination (AQE) in India; however, this is not necessary for admission to North American medical schools. Most UofT Human Biology graduates proceed directly to North American medical school or research master’s programmes without returning to NEET track.

Ques. Is the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) automatically granted after graduation, or do I need to apply separately?

Ans. The PGWP is automatically eligible upon graduation; you must apply for it within six months of receiving your degree completion notification from University of Toronto. Application is online via Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) portal; processing time is 80-180 days. You do not need employer sponsorship to apply. Once approved, the permit is valid for up to four years (matching your programme duration), allowing you to work for any Canadian employer without additional permits. Many Indian graduates use this period to gain Canadian work experience and then transition to permanent residency via Express Entry.

University of Toronto’s Bachelor of Science in Human Biology uniquely positions international students for research careers in genomics, precision medicine, and healthcare leadership across North America. The combination of top-tier research intensity, strong industry placement networks, and clear visa sponsorship pathways makes this programme valuable for Indians seeking science-based careers abroad. Expect significant investment (INR 2 Crores+), competitive entry (80%+ recommended), and substantial return over a 10-15 year career horizon (salary growth from INR 38 L to INR 75+ L). Most graduates transition to medical school, research doctorates, or industry biotech roles within two to four years of employment, further accelerating earning potential and career advancement.

If you have graduated from a designated learning institution in Canada, you may be eligible to apply for PGWP. However, graduating from a designated learning institution does not automatically make you eligible to appy for PGWP. You will be able to apply for PGWP after completing the one-year Certificate in Cloud Computing program of this university.
