The MSc Medical Science program opens three intake windows annually: January 2027 (applications close August 1, 2026), May 2027 (December 1, 2026), and September 2027 (April 1, 2027). Intakes depend on supervisor availability and research group funding.

January 2027 N/A (ongoing) 01 August 2026 Open
May 2027 August 2026 01 December 2026 Not Yet Open
September 2027 October 2026 01 April 2027 Not Yet Open

Academic Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree (4-year) from a recognized institution with minimum 3.0 GPA over the final two years (60 units) is required. Applicants in related disciplines (biology, chemistry, biochemistry, health sciences, molecular biology) are prioritized. Your final degree GPA will be calculated from transcripts; a 70-75% equivalent minimum is standard.

Thesis-based MSc admission emphasizes research fit. Applicants must secure a faculty supervisor in their research area before or immediately after admission. Strong research proposals and relevant lab experience significantly increase chances of funding support.

GRE Requirement

GRE is compulsory for this program. A minimum combined score of 300 is recommended (Quantitative + Verbal). Indian applicants typically score 305-315 in competitive cohorts. The exam costs approximately INR 19,000 and can be completed online. Registration and test completion should occur 2-3 months before your target application deadline.

English Language Proficiency (ELP)

If English is not your first language, you must submit one of these test scores: IELTS overall 7.5 (minimum 6.5 per component), Duolingo 125, or PTE 75. TOEFL is also accepted (equivalent to IELTS 7.5 = TOEFL 100+ iBT). These thresholds reflect the program’s emphasis on research-level academic writing and presentation skills. IELTS is the most widely recognized test; plan 2-3 months preparation and test fees are typically INR 15,000-17,000.

University of Calgary ranks 211th globally (QS 2026) and 200th (THE 2026). The Cumming School of Medicine is Canada’s newest medical school with strong research infrastructure and faculty recruitment in biomedical sciences.

Tip for Indian Students: Credential evaluation via WES takes 4-6 weeks; submit your application 6-8 weeks before the deadline. GRE and English tests should be completed by June (for August deadline) to allow time for processing.

University of Calgary Medical Science MSc Application 2026

  • Supervisor match is critical; email 2-3 potential supervisors before submitting your formal application.
  • Funding support (scholarships, teaching assistantships) is competitive; mention research interests clearly in your statement.
Application Strategy: Contact your target supervisor via email 4-6 weeks before the deadline. A strong research statement that aligns with the supervisor’s funding and interests significantly improves admission odds.

University of Calgary Medical Science MSc Scholarships 2026

International graduate scholarships at UCalgary are merit-based and tied to research potential. The program offers few scholarships directly to international students entering the MSc; however, funding comes primarily through Teaching Assistantships (TA) and Research Assistantships (RA).

Golden Key Graduate Scholar Award: INR 1.00 Lakh per year (approximately CAD 1,426) is available to academically excellent graduate students. Additional merit-based grants range from CAD 500 to CAD 3,000. Alberta Innovates Graduate Scholarship (provincial, CAD 10,000-15,000) may be available to Canadian citizens or permanent residents only.

Financial Reality: Most international MSc students fund studies through a combination of personal savings, family support, and research-based TA/RA work. A typical funding package for a strong applicant includes tuition coverage via scholarship (CAD 2,000-5,000) plus TA/RA stipend (CAD 15,000-25,000 over two years). This covers 25-40% of total costs; most students finance the remainder.

Also Check: Canada Master’s Scholarships for Indian Students

Scholarship Reality: Competitive Canadian MSc programs rarely offer full scholarships to international students. Plan to self-fund 60-75% of costs; scholarships offset 25-40%. Stronger applicants with published research secure TA/RA positions immediately, reducing net cost significantly.

Canada Visa and Work Rights for Medical Science Students

International students studying in Canada are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) immediately after degree completion. The PGWP duration matches your program length; an MSc Medical Science graduate receives a two-year work permit with no employer sponsorship required. This open work permit allows you to work full-time for any Canadian employer in any field.

  • PGWP is issued without employer nomination; you can change employers freely and work across sectors.
  • After 12 months of full-time Canadian work experience, you are eligible for Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker program) leading to permanent residency within 6-12 months.
  • Permanent residency opens pathways to spouse/family sponsorship and eventual Canadian citizenship (eligible after 3 years PR status).
  • Medical research roles (NOC 2211 Biological Technologists, NOC 4165 Science Professionals) are in-demand under Canada’s skilled worker programs.

Check Out: Canada Post-Study Work Permit (PGWP) for Graduates

Visa Reality: The PGWP + Express Entry pathway allows skilled master’s graduates to transition from student to permanent resident within 2-3 years of graduation. No employer sponsorship required for PGWP or early PR stages makes Canada highly accessible post-graduation.

The University of Calgary Medical Science MSc is ideal for research-focused international students seeking Canadian education at lower cost than the US or UK, with strong post-study work and permanent residency pathways. The two-year thesis model emphasizes publication and independent research—preparing graduates for academic, government, or pharma careers worldwide. Strong supervisory fit, GRE preparation, and early contact with faculty are critical success factors.

Master of Science Medical Science FAQs

Ques. Is the University of Calgary Medical Science MSc recognized internationally?

Ans. Yes; the university is QS-ranked 211th globally with strong reputation in biomedical research. The Canadian degree is recognized for postdoctoral fellowships in the US, UK, and Australia. International publication record of your thesis and supervisor’s research standing carry more weight than the university rank for further academic career advancement.

Ques. Can I work while studying the Medical Science MSc in Canada?

Ans. Yes; international students on a valid study permit can work up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks. Most Medical Science students work as Teaching Assistants (TA) or Research Assistants (RA) within the university, earning CAD 18-22 per hour. This provides both funding and research experience relevant to your thesis.

Ques. What happens if I don’t find a supervisor before applying?

Ans. While contacting supervisors beforehand is strongly recommended, it is not always mandatory. Many applications without pre-arranged supervisors are reviewed, and matches are made during the evaluation process. However, applications with supervisor interest letters have significantly higher acceptance rates (typically 40-50% vs. 15-20% without). Reach out to 2-3 supervisors early.

Ques. Can I pursue a PhD after completing the Medical Science MSc?

Ans. Yes; the MSc is a pathway degree to PhD programs. Many UCalgary graduates remain for PhD studies in the same research group, while others transition to PhD programs at other Canadian or international universities. PhD funding is more generous than MSc funding, often fully covering tuition and providing monthly stipends (CAD 1,500-2,000).

Ques. How much can I earn through TA/RA work during the MSc?

Ans. TA/RA stipends typically range CAD 15,000-25,000 over the two-year program, depending on hours allocated (8-12 per week). At CAD 18-22 per hour, this offsets 25-40% of your living costs. Some students combine TA (fall/winter) with full-time RA summer work, earning CAD 28,000-35,000 total per year.
