Intake Application Opens Deadline Decision Date
Fall 2027 01 Oct 2026 01 Feb 2027 31 May 2027
Winter 2028 01 Jul 2026 01 Nov 2026 31 Jan 2027

International students must hold secondary education equivalent to Canadian Grade 12, with minimum averages: English 70%, Mathematics 70%, Science 70% (Biology or Chemistry required). Physics recommended for mathematics pathways.

English Language Proficiency (ELP) Requirements

University of Calgary requires proof of English proficiency for all international applicants whose secondary education was not in English.

Test Overall Minimum Per-Component Minimum Validity
IELTS (Academic) 6.5 6.0 (all bands) 2 years
TOEFL iBT 83 20 (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking) 2 years
Duolingo English Test 110 N/A 3 years
PTE Academic 59 50 (all skills) 2 years

IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 per component is the most common benchmark for Indian applicants. Average preparation time in India: 8-12 weeks with prior English study. TOEFL emphasizes listening and reading (25% of score each); weaker speaking scores are common for Indian test-takers and are often overlooked if overall score meets 83.

Duolingo is cheaper (INR 5,000) and faster (test results in 48 hours) but some employers do not recognize it; use only as a backup to IELTS or TOEFL for visa purposes.

Honest take: IELTS 6.5 is achievable for Indian Grade 12 graduates with 70%+ in English; most pass first attempt with systematic prep. If you score 6.0 overall, appeal to admissions; they sometimes waive 0.5 band shortfalls for strong academics.

University of Calgary ranks 211th globally (QS 2026) and 200th (THE 2026), placing it in Canada’s top 10 universities. The Cumming School of Medicine holds research strength in healthcare informatics and genomics.
