What Students Say
Likes
- Learning Commons and Library Services.
- Clean and maintained Athletic Centre.
- Almost every classroom is equiped with Projectors
Dislikes
- Some professors teach as if they’re just there to read off the slides and leave.
- The college’s co-op/internship portal isn’t great — if you’re applying through Sheridan’s co-op system, you often have to apply twice: once on the portal and again on the employer’s career website.
- Student services are not very efficient. (Including the Office of the Registrar: for complex queries, your only option is to email, and it can take 3–4 business days to get a response.)
Course Curriculum
- I would describe the difficulty level as Medium but it really depends on how you handle all the assignments and how you manage your time. There are courses or subjects which were purely based on Theory and had no practicals but some of those courses were the building blocks for computer science.
- Most Positive aspect of the course : It touched most of the areas in computer science, such as distributed computing, artificial intelligence, Linear Algebra, DSA, Cloud infrastructure, etc.
- Most Negative aspect of the course: The way of teaching of professors can really make or break your experience in a particular niche. I would suggest not just depending on the professor to understand a particular topic.
- Starting of Classes can range between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm. Average Students : 30-40. At trafalgar campus in oakville there were 40 percent of students that were indian.
Admission Experience
- I applied to over 12 different colleges and Universities and I got conditional offer letters from 9 out of 12.
- I got confirmed admission from Lakehead University, Brock University, Conestoga College and Sheridan College
- I got rejection from Seneca Polytechnic and Ryerson University (currently renamed to Toronto Metropolitan University) because of my IELTS score.
- In my opinion, the main reason was my IELTS score, which was 6.5 overall and also because I have done a diploma in computer engineering from India (I did not pursue 11th and 12th grades). Other than that, my actual profile was pretty good, with my overall grades at 89%.
- I choose sheridan college because the courses they provided made more sense on paper. There were a good amount of advanced and intermediate-level courses in 2nd 3rd and 4th years of this course and I chose this option especially because there were many professional electives and courses on mobile development and I was very passionate about it at that time.
- You apply, you get a conditional offer letter (if your current education is still ongoing), you keep updating your latest marksheet on the student admission portal and eventually, if you are lucky and you did everything, you will get a final offer letter.
- Minimum Requirements :
- 6.5 IELTS with no less than 6.0 in each module.
- Overall Minimum 70% percent in your current education.
- The admission process was normal and I did not face any challenges
- I originally applied for the September 2020 intake, but due to COVID-19, I wasn’t able to complete the admission process. My previous educational institution was delayed in providing my final semester diploma marksheet and other required documents, so I deferred and opted for the January 2021 intake instead.
- The admission process took approximately 2 to 2.5 months in total — from the time I submitted my application to when I received the official offer letter.
Faculty
- Faculty-to-student ratio : 1 professor per 30 students (Approximate).
- The way of teaching of professors can really make or break your experience in a particular niche. I would suggest not just depending on the professor to understand a particular topic.
- For securing a job, just learning course content is not enough. There is a separate department to help students find co-op. You need to ask at the Student Hub about your co-op supervisor.
- There are very few faculty who I admire and who are actually interested in explaining to the students and making them understand. One of those faculties is Prof. El Sayed Mahmud, who taught us Data Structures and algorithms. He will make sure everyone understands the concept from the ground up.
Campus Life
- 3 campuses which are in 3 different cities. Oakville, Mississauga, Brampton
- Facilities includes
- Library,
- Athletic Centre which includes Gym , Basketball court, badminton court and football field,
- Quiet Study rooms,
- Meeting rooms
- Learning Commons
- Cafeteria
- Festivals are being celebrated only by the student organisation here, which is SSU (Sheridan Student Union). They regularly organized events on Diwali, Navratri etc.
- There are many sports clubs that you can be part of, such as Badminton, Table tennis, Basketball, Volleyball etc. You should connect with seniors to get more information about a particular sport.
Part Time Jobs
- TA positions depend on the course professors. You should contact professors for those positions.
- Pay range can be anywhere between 18 and 20 Canadian dollars per hour
- There are many on-campus jobs. You can apply to any food franchise which is on campus, which includes Tim Hortons, subway, Harveys and there are also peer mentor jobs, which include guiding new students to navigate the campus.
- I did not receive any scholarship while applying at Sheridan College in the January intake of 2021. No international student received a scholarship then because of COVID-19.
- Students having a particular GPA during study can avail scholarships, which are typically provided in the form of CAD 1,000 per semester.
- My one friend received a 1,000 dollar scholarship two times in total throughout 8 semesters at Sheridan on the basis of their performance.
- I’m not exactly sure how many students receive scholarships each year, as the college doesn’t publicly share those statistics in detail.
Placement
- I am not sure about the number of people securing employment within 6 months. Due to the current job market, not many people are securing a job fast enough.
- The college does not reveal any salary range numbers for students upon graduation.
- After graduation, you need to network and apply to jobs using linkedin, glassdoor and indeed there is no campus recruitment or online job portal provided by Sheridan College itself.
- Most of my batchmates who have landed a job found their job using linkedin.
Accommodation
- I opted for off-campus accommodation because on-campus accommodation can be very expensive for international students. I found out about my accommodation using facebook marketplace and kijiji website
- I paid around 750 dollars per month for my accommodation (for a personal room).
- The main challenge was to find something in budget.
- My recommendation would be to look for accommodations on facebook marketplace because there are a greater number of properties listed here.
- My accommodation is walking distance from college (10-12 min of walk)
Exams
- The only required exam for my application was the IELTS, which I submitted as proof of English language proficiency.
- Along with the application, I also submitted a Statement of Purpose (SOP), Letters of Recommendation (LORs), my resume, and marksheets from my previous education institute. Including strong SOPs and LORs can definitely improve your chances of admission.
- There was no interview involved in my application process — the decision was made solely based on the documents I submitted.
Fees
- Per semester – Almost 10k CAD (for international students), which includes every fee, including tuition, gym, etc.
- Fees are charged semester-wise.
- Monthly expense is highly dependent on your rent. Expect an approximate expense of about 1200-1500 CAD a month (Assuming your monthly rent is around 700-750 CAD a month), which includes everything from grocery, rent, phone bills, etc.
Scholarship
- I did not receive any scholarships when I applied to Sheridan College for the January 2021 intake. At that time, there were no scholarships automatically awarded to international students because of Covid.
- Students who maintain a certain GPA during their studies can apply for scholarships, which typically offer around CAD 1,000 per semester.
- One of my friends received a 1,000 dollar scholarship twice during their academic journey at Sheridan, based on their performance.
- I’m not exactly sure how many students receive scholarships each year, as the college doesn’t publicly share those statistics in detail.
