Course Curriculum

10

  • My degree was one of the best degrees in memorial university, because the courses difficulty level was mix of medium and hard. Also for some courses it depends on the professor.
  • A positive aspect of my degree, was they have a co-op option so you can work for eight months in a company and 99% of the cases the company hires you for the full-time and all over the Canada, US universities don’t do campus placements like in India. But here memorial university does campus placements.
  • It’s a good thing for Indians to get hired in a company very easily less competition. Around 30% of my class was Indian students and others were Iranian, Chinese, and some other countries.

Admission Experience

  • Memorial University - Admitted
    Conestoga College - Admitted
    Lambton College - Admitted
    George Brown College - Waitlisted
    University of Toronto - Rejected
    Waterloo University - Rejected
    University of Lethbridge - Waitlisted
    Concordia University - Waitlisted
    Northeastern University(Toronto, Boston)- Admitted
University of Baltimore Maryland - Admitted
    University of Alberta - Rejected
  • Fees were cheapest amongst all as it was 10k for a year but later they increased it to 15k. The admission process was simple and smooth, just filled the form on their application portal, and then received the email regarding admit, with all the details on next steps to create there ID, how to pay the fees and on submitting the study visa file to IRCC. for masters student sds@mun.ca is the email where anyone can contact and ask their doubts, they are really quick about replying to you. Plus the officer who is in charge of this thing replies to people on the facebook group of MUN as well. So anybody can just post there query on facebook page, and you will get a reply.
  • Initially, I applied for September intake that is fall intake but when I received my admit, my visa got rejected so I had to postpone my admission to the next intake and then next year was the Covid so I couldn’t travel and then I went after the Covid to the university in 2022 September intake, that is fall. I applied around October for the next years fall intake, but they replied to me with the admit around April time so we can say around 5 to 6 months of process time for the admission.

Faculty

10

  • The faculty to student ratio in every course varies because some courses are like mix of undergrad and grad students so if it’s a mix, then the class capacity is like 60+ students in class and if the course is just for the grad students, then the course capacity is like 30 students at max, but courses were never full Because here people can take courses in any semester.
  • Yes they are teaching methodology is good. It’s more practical based for masters level they just gave you the problem statement and you have to figure out how to deal with it. They will not tell you which languages you should be using and all, they just guide you if you're stuck somewhere. Some faculty members help students in getting the full-time jobs as they have connections in the industry so if you are in the good books of your professor, then you might get lucky.

Campus Life

10

  • In St. John's, it’s only one campus which is the main campus of memorial university, there are so many fest celebrated in the university in terms of Indian festivals, last year we celebrated Holi, Diwali, Republic Day, etc.
  • For sports and extracurricular activities we have a football ground, baseball ground. We have a swimming pool building with multiple pools called Aquarina, now they are hosting Canada games this year in the Aquarina so currently it is not useable for students.
  • Then we have a big gym, which has all the facilities and courts for badminton, tennis, racquetball and basketball. Also, we have a library with equipped computers for everyone free of cost even after you graduate like 3-D printers for cheaper price and normal printers as well.

Part Time Jobs

  • I’m not sure about the total number, how many people get the teaching assistant or research assistant positions. But for one year, I was the teaching assistant for one course Comp1003, the period was really good like $24 per hour and it is a fixed contract of 100 hours so my semester fees were fully paid by TA job only. For undergrad students it is less $18 per hour. Plus as per the Canadian rules on campus jobs, they don’t count the number of hours you worked so people can do a lot of hours and get a good amount and there is no tax cut also for the university jobs.
  • If you are working outside the university then for students, the limit is 24 hours per week and most indian students prefer to work in the restaurants and Walmart, Costco, and other stores in mall. Currently the job situation is also bad because so many people came and that’s why the housing crisis and job crisis is happening right now. When I landed there were so many jobs available in a single day I got four jobs but right now even after two months people are struggling to get a job, but some people are getting jobs in one month also so I think it really depends on how much you’re trying to get a job quickly.

Placement

8

  • For IT we have few companies here so getting a job within six months after graduation is really easy for computer people, but really difficult for other branches as the market for other branches is really bad so most of the people move out of the province and go to whichever province they get a job.
  • There are a few jobs that related to Oil&Gas are available in this province if you are getting a field job related to your study then your pay will be minimum $70,000 and above.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • I was living off campus as it was cheaper as compared to the university accommodations. Here most people use Facebook marketplace to find accommodation or furniture basically all other things to buy/sell.
  • My monthly rent was $600 including the utilities for the first year. Then I got another good house which was $500 excluding the utilities but the room is nice with my separate washroom so I moved into that house. Nowadays, finding accommodation is really difficult because of the housing crisis happening in Canada.
  • The time I came, there were a lot of houses available and anyone could’ve easily got the house within one week, but now the situation is different. The house I am living in and my previous house as well is just five minutes walk to the university. This is the common area where all the students stay, it is the right opposite to the university on Elizabeth Avenue.

Exams

  • I gave the IELTS exam and I had the GRE score as well because I was applying for the US universities also, so I submitted both the scores while applying to the memorial university.
  • The other documents were required like the statement of purpose, letter of recommendation from the Previous staff of engineering college, your own cover letter and resume. There was no interview for this university at the time I applied probably they changed it now. I’m not sure about the current process.

Fees

  • For me every semester it was around $3300, Yearly $10,000. Which included only university fees like semester fees, recreation fees, Graduated Union fees, etc. University on campus living is expensive so I lived outside only always.
  • My monthly expense was $1000 a month. Including rent, groceries, utilities, bus pass, phone bill, everything. For undergraduate student the fees are course based(credit wise) so its expensive for them.

Scholarship

  • No, but I applied for a grant of 250$ towards my educational material expense, which i received it, from the graduate students union. but there are many scholarship programs going on in the university for which people apply, but I didn't applied for any of the scholarships, most of them are for undergraduate students and for masters they have few scholarships available.
