What Students Say
Likes
- The Fee for almost all the courses is nominal compared to most other universities. Lot of funding for research-based programs especially. Also my course has the CO-OP facility which lets me work for about 8 months in an IT company as part of the course, which itself has a lot of advantages.
- Apart from these the university has a lot of opportuities that students can explore and benefit from like entrepreneurial cell, get involved in research, TA opportunities which is easily available and accessible and many others like this.
- The University has 0 tolerence for bullying, sexual harrasement or anything fo that sort. The other awesome thing abiut the university is evry single building or section in the university is connected via tunnel which is extremely useful during winters. And the university has almost all the courses.
Dislikes
- The number of courses that are offered in a semester for students to choose from is limited. Sometimes we might end up choosing a course just because we have to finish the credits. The location of the university is in Newfoundland which has extreme weather sometimes, especially in winter and the wind makes it very hard here.
- Summer is like really less here. And also the province has fewer opportunities for computer science and IT. but these are all with respect to the location of the university.
Required Exams for Admission
So far it has been excellent. So many opportunities right from working as TA to being vide president in IYA to COOP , there has been wide areas to explore and learn and has definitely expanded my skillset as a software engineer.
Course Curriculum
The course curriculum is very good and structured fantastically. We even have awesome subjects that are booming right now like machine learning, data science and much more. SO there is a lot of opportunities to expand our knowledge and skillset. Yes, my course comes with a mandatory 8 months coop where we work full time for a IT company.
Faculty
The professors are excellent and easy to talk to. Communication is very transparent. They do not spoon feed however. Lecture timings for a course will be weekly 5 hours at the max per subject, which means a lot of your studies involves your effort and research. there is no fixed student faculty ratio. Some courses would be just 30 students in a class, while for some other courses it would even be 100. However, there are TAs who you can talk to any time and also the professors hold office hours during which you can talk to them or mail them anytime and they reply back mostly the same day.
Campus Life
Not just the university , every single place here has Wifi. So there is no need to have internet pack in mobile. Most of the professors will be doing research on their specialized areas and if anyone is interested to be apart of that, they can approach the professors anytime and if they have an opening, they will take you in. Basically, all all these are very transparent. TA opportunities are also transparent and if you remain active in looking for opportunities you can easily grab one. I worked as TA and the pay is also very good. Music, dance, regional club, volunteering activities etc. , name anything it is available.
Placement
There is no placement like India. We have to apply for the job ourselves. However for COOP the university has COOP office that will guide you.
Accommodation
On-campus accommodation is costly. S0 90% of people stay outside. Normally a decent single room in a shared unit comes between 500 to 700 including utilities. I lived in a basement girls building for 4 months and I paid 550 CAD including utilities and it is just 5 min walk to the university. My husband then came here in Feb on SOWP and we both are living in a private basement which has two bedrooms I am paying 1100 CAD including utilities and that is also 5 min from the university. It is always better to choose accommodations with utilities included. Also should be aware of scams. Here the only mode of transportation is the Metrobus. The cab is very costly so students mostly don use it unless it's urgent. No other mode of public transportation so better choose to house near the university.
Exams
I took IELTS and my score was overall 8. and minimum 7 was required for us at the time of our admission. For MBA programs, the score required is a bit more. I submitted SOP, LOR and CV. In SOP, imp points are why do you want to do masters, if you have professional exp, stress on that. If there is GAP, need to provide proper justification, mention about finance, home ties. LOR better to get one from HOD of the college and two from senior professors who taught us some course. The above is true for students with no industrial exp. If one has industrial experience, then two from university and one from your current manager or team lead.
Fees
For the First year which is 3 semester the fee is around 9500 CAD. The same goes for second year. So for a student to finish my program it would take 19000 to 20000CAD. And for GIC you need to deposit 10k. But the best part is, actually what I am doing is, I paid the first year fee from India, and deposited 10k in GIC. I don't use my GIC money for living expense. Part time job here is enough to cover your living expense as long as you do not over spend like parties etc. So I am using my GIC for second year fee. That way I am finishing my whole studies in 20K. And another best part is my program has COOP, which means you can work full time for 8 months, which will give you an opportunity to earn between 20 k to 25K, which means you are also covering all your study expenses during your masters itself, Which is incredible.
