Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

  • I chose my course because of the curriculum and the depth of the subjects. I got a combination of management and finance only at Monash.
  • It is a multi cultural university with a great ranking in Australia and in the world.

Tips to enhance your application

  • It’s good to mention all the skills that you have gained from your degrees and other courses. Skills attained outside of formal education are also valued here. Personally, I did the CFA level 1, which helped me get into an advanced finance degree.

Admission Experience

  • I chose Monash University as it is the best university in Melbourne, which offered me the combination of management and finance. I did my due diligence and the curriculum is well suited to my needs of in-depth study into financial concepts while gaining soft skills with the management degree.
  • The course is filled with knowledge and great student life; there are many societies to join and a lot of people to talk to. Career opportunities in Melbourne are also sufficient for both part-time and full-time.

Class Schedule

9

  • There usually is one seminar or lecture for finance courses per week per unit, followed by a tutorial for each unit. For management, there is one tutorial for each unit. I feel these are sufficient for the courses and provide enough knowledge with self-study to do the assignments, which are almost 3 per unit per semester.
  • I have one exam every semester for one finance unit only and others just have assignments. The timings are different for each semester and usually can be done in 2 to 3 days a week. There are Indians in the degree, probably 20-30%. 10 hours every week is sufficient for assignments and self-study.

Faculty

8

  • Faculties are on par with the top universities and prepare us for industry-relevant skills. They do a lot of case studies and examples, which is great to learn.
  • There are usually three faculties for each unit so probably 1 to 20/25 faculty to students ratio for each degree. I have not approached any faculty for references but I am sure they can help in some way.

Campus Life

10

  • Monash has four campuses in Australia and one in Malaysia. My campus is the second largest, which is the Caulfield campus. With a big library and a lot of study spaces spread across the campus, medical facilities are available on normal times and they are helpful enough to refer to insurance, including doctors around Melbourne.
  • There are opportunities for all kinds of sports and clubs. The O-week is great at the main campus, Clayton, and good for my campus as well; there are parties at different festivals throughout the semester.

Part Time Jobs

  • It is easy to get jobs in hospitality and retail when starting out. Part-time internships are also available but are less and quite competitive. The minimum pay for any job in Australia is around 25 aud per hour and the average is a couple of dollars north of that.
  • The usual process is to apply through Seek, Indeed and Jora jobs. Students should apply to company websites directly by looking at stores around them like McDonald's, KFC, etc., Rebel, JD sports and others.
  • TA is hard to get if you are not from a research masters or a PhD; some friends of mine have tried it and they are not allowed to do it on a masters by coursework visa.
  • Campus jobs are open to international students and students can get them, but they are still very difficult. Internships are dependent on individuals and their achievements; we as international students are at a disadvantage but it is not impossible to get an internship.
  • 48 hours per fortnight is allowed on masters by coursework visa; on masters by research, you can work unlimited hours. There are a lot of part-time opportunities off campus and if anyone is actively looking, they will surely get one.

Placement

8

  • As far as I have witnessed, there are many jobs available for students and a little less than normal for international students. Still, it is possible to get a full-time job after 6–12 months of job completion. People have got jobs even before graduating, so it is basically about your resume and your interviews. Nobody is at a disadvantage just because of the visa.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • I live with my friend and we are renting a two-bedroom apartment. Accommodation is available on real estate and domain and there are student accommodations for people who don’t know anyone here. A lot of my friends are living in student accommodations and they are happy with it. It can be a little expensive here but you can earn your expenses while studying.
  • Challenges can be with no rental history so renting an apartment for a newcomer is not the easiest job. I advise living in student accommodations and getting pay slips steadily for at least 6 months before renting by yourself.
