Likes
- University of Melbourne is the highest ranked university in Australia, and what attracted me to it was the "Melbourne Model" which allows students to study subjects under different faculties. This was particularly interesting to me since I wanted to experiment with different subjects before making up my mind about my career. Furthermore, Melbourne is one of the best cities to live in, offering opportunities to learn about different cultures and ways of life. All these factors in cumulation made UniMelb my first choice!
- The academic flexibility with regards to shifting your majors or studying subjects under different faculties, cross-cultural exposure given the international nature of the university and the myriad of internship or paid employment opportunities at one's disposal.
Dislikes
- University life in Australia can get quiet isolating given the divide between domestic and international students. I found the lack of sense of belonging to the most promising challenge. Moreover, the curriculum is structured to emphasizes independence and self-reliance, which can pose a significant challenge for students coming from diverse educational backgrounds.
Required Exams for Admission
I would rate it as superb, it has pushed me to try and experiment. I have loved it through and through!
Course Curriculum
The course curriculum is updated every year which makes it quite relevant and interesting.
Faculty
The university is quite research-focused, and has an impressive faculty with years of experience. The faculty is diverse and has varied specialisations.
Campus Life
The university has made significant efforts in the past to celebrate different cultural festivals from Diwali, Holi to Chinese New Year in a bid to foster cross-cultural interaction. The events range from Mental Health Week to weekly Bands and BBQ in the campus.
Placement
The university ranks very highly on the employability metric. It hosts employability workshops, networking events in a bid to boost the prospects of students.
Accommodation
There is an eclectic range of accommodation options for students. These could range from $500/ week to the cheapest at about $250/ week. However, these are significantly more expensive in the city, cheaper options are available in the suburbs.
Exams
My IELTS score was 8.0, Listening: 9.0, Reading: 8.5. I did not give any other standardized tests. I submitted SOP which emphasised on my passion for Politics and what I intend to do with my degree in the future. Furthermore, I attempted to present a well-rounded picture by incorporating my co-curriculars and passion for community engagement.
Fees
The annual fees amounts to $40,000 which is about to 22 lakh rupees.
Scholarship
I received the Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship which covered 100% of my tuition fees for the entirety of my undergraduate studies. It is purely based on academic merit.
