Swarna Jayanti Fellowship is a fellowship scheme initiated by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India to provide financial assistance to specific praiseworthy students for further continuing with their novel researches in the field of scientific studies. Scientists chosen for the prize will be able to conduct unrestricted research with the freedom and flexibility to spend money as approved in the research plan. The project should include novel research ideas and have the potential to affect R&D in the subject. The fellowships are scientist-specific rather than institution-specific, highly selective, and closely monitored by academics. The scheme was initiated by the Government of India on behalf of the 50th Indian Independence. 

The selected candidates are sanctioned an amount of INR 25,000 per month along with a monthly pay fixed by the institution in which they are conducting their research. Apart from this, they are given many other allowances as long as they are related to their researches. The fellowship is applicable only for a period of 5 years. 

To be considered an eligible candidate, the applicant must have a PhD in Science/Engineering/Medicine and must not be receiving Fellowship from any other Government of India Scheme. Scientists should be engaged in cutting-edge science and engineering, with significant contributions in the form of research papers and/or patents, peer acknowledgement from the scientific community, prizes, and so on in their field of study. In addition, the applicant's age should be between 30 and 40 years old.

Swarna Jayanti Fellowship Eligibility

  • Candidates must be Indian nationals.
  • They should be between the age group of 30 and 40.
  • They must have a PhD in either Medicine, Engineering, or Science.
  • They must be employed on a regular basis by research or academic organisation recognised by the Indian government.
  • Candidates should not be getting benefits from any other fellowship programmes run by the Indian government.
  • The candidate must receive a genuine letter of recommendation from the scientific and technology department where they plan to undertake their fellowship. The letter from the applicable department/head institution's should declare that this facility will make appropriate management preparations.

  • The Swarna Jayanti Fellowship is applicable only for a period of 5 years.

  • The extra allowances involve international or national study tour allowances if in case the candidate wishes to travel for their research or studies.

  • The selected fellows and projects will be reviewed for financing by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) in accordance with SERB criteria for fellowship, recurring, and non-recurring heads.
