KSEAB has reduced the Karnataka SSLC 2026 aggregate to 525 marks by excluding the third language score from the final calculation, down from the earlier total of 625 marks.

Karnataka School Examinations and Assessment Board (KSEAB) announced that third language subjects — including Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Arabic, Konkani, Tulu and Marathi — will no longer be counted in the SSLC aggregate. Students must still appear for the third language exam, but their score will be reflected as a letter grade on the marksheet rather than being added to the 525-mark total used for result and percentage calculation.

  • The SSLC 2026 aggregate is calculated out of 525 marks, not 625.
  • Third language marks are excluded from the aggregate and appear on the marksheet as a letter grade (A to D).
  • Five subjects — First Language, Second Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Science — form the 525-mark aggregate.
  • Appearing for the third language exam is mandatory despite the subject not contributing to the aggregate.
  • Your percentage is now calculated as (Sum of 5 subjects ÷ 525) × 100.
  • Students who scored poorly in the third language may see a higher percentage under the new system.

What Changed in KSEAB SSLC 2026 Scoring

Before 2026, the Karnataka SSLC aggregate was calculated across all six subjects for a total of 625 marks. The revised system, announced by Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa, excludes the third language from numerical scoring, bringing the aggregate down to 525 marks.

The stated aim of this change was to reduce examination stress on students by removing the third language burden from their final score. The Karnataka High Court, responding to petitions against the change, directed that students must still receive numerical marks — not just a letter grade — for their third language on the 2026 marksheet. However, those marks do not count toward the 525-mark aggregate used to calculate percentage and rank.

Subject-wise Marks Under the 525-Mark System

The table below shows all six SSLC subjects, their maximum marks and whether each contributes to the final 525-mark aggregate.

Subject Maximum Marks Counted in 525 Aggregate?
First Language (Kannada / English / Hindi / Urdu / Telugu etc.) 125 Yes
Second Language (English / Kannada) 100 Yes
Third Language (Hindi / Urdu / Sanskrit / Arabic / Konkani / Tulu / Marathi) 100 No — shown as grade only
Mathematics 100 Yes
Science 100 Yes
Social Science 100 Yes
Total — Old System (2025 and before) 625 All 6 subjects counted
Total — New System (2026 onwards) 525 5 subjects counted

The First Language carries 125 marks — 25 more than any other subject — because it includes internal assessment components alongside the theory paper. Each of the remaining four aggregate subjects carries 100 marks.

How to Calculate Your SSLC 2026 Aggregate Score

Formula: (First Language + Second Language + Mathematics + Science + Social Science) ÷ 525 × 100 = Percentage

  1. Write down your marks in First Language (maximum 125).
  2. Add your Second Language marks (maximum 100).
  3. Add your Mathematics marks (maximum 100).
  4. Add your Science marks (maximum 100).
  5. Add your Social Science marks (maximum 100).
  6. Divide the total by 525 and multiply by 100 to get your percentage.

Sample Calculation:

Subject Marks Scored Maximum Marks Counted?
First Language 108 125 Yes
Second Language 85 100 Yes
Third Language 72 100 No
Mathematics 92 100 Yes
Science 89 100 Yes
Social Science 87 100 Yes
Aggregate 461 out of 525 87.81%

Old vs New: How Your Percentage Changes

Removing the third language from the aggregate changes your percentage depending on how you scored in that paper relative to your average in the other five subjects.

Student Type Third Language Score Old % (out of 625) New % (out of 525) Change
Weak in third language 55 / 100 (461 + 55) / 625 × 100 = 82.56% 461 / 525 × 100 = 87.81% +5.25 percentage points
Average in third language 78 / 100 (461 + 78) / 625 × 100 = 86.24% 461 / 525 × 100 = 87.81% +1.57 percentage points
Strong in third language 93 / 100 (461 + 93) / 625 × 100 = 88.64% 461 / 525 × 100 = 87.81% −0.83 percentage point

Students who scored significantly below their average in the third language gain the most from this change. Students who excelled in the third language may see a marginal dip in their percentage since that high score is no longer counted in the aggregate.

Third Language Grade on Your Marksheet

Even though the third language is excluded from the 525-mark aggregate, your score in the paper still appears on the SSLC marksheet. The Karnataka High Court directed that students must receive numerical marks — not only a grade — for the 2026 result. KSEAB converts those marks into a letter grade alongside the numeric score.

Approximate Marks Scored (out of 100) Letter Grade
90 and above A
75 – 89 B
60 – 74 C
35 – 59 D

A Grade A in the third language reflects strong performance and is noted on your marksheet, but does not add to your 525-mark aggregate. Appearing for this exam is compulsory — absence may affect your marksheet record and overall eligibility.

Pass Criteria Under the New System

Students need to meet minimum qualifying marks in each of the five subjects that form the 525-mark aggregate and must also appear for the third language exam.

Requirement Detail
Minimum pass marks — First Language (out of 125) 44 marks (35%)
Minimum pass marks — each 100-mark subject 35 marks (35%)
Third Language Mandatory appearance; score appears as a grade but does not affect the aggregate
Overall result Must pass all five aggregate subjects

A student who scores below the minimum in the third language alone does not fail the SSLC aggregate result, since that subject carries no numerical weight in the 525-mark total. The fail status for the third language paper is recorded separately on the marksheet.

KSEAB SSLC 2026 Aggregate FAQs

Ques. Is the KSEAB SSLC 2026 aggregate out of 525 or 625?

Ans. The KSEAB SSLC 2026 aggregate is calculated out of 525 marks. The third language paper, which was worth 100 marks in the old 625-mark system, is excluded from the final aggregate calculation.

Ques. Which subjects are counted in the 525-mark SSLC aggregate?

Ans. Five subjects are counted: First Language (125 marks), Second Language (100 marks), Mathematics (100 marks), Science (100 marks) and Social Science (100 marks). The Third Language (100 marks) is excluded from the aggregate.

Ques. Do I still need to appear for the third language exam?

Ans. Yes, appearing for the third language exam is compulsory. Your score appears on the marksheet as both a number and a letter grade. However, those marks are not added to the 525-mark aggregate used to calculate your result.

Ques. How do I calculate my KSEAB SSLC 2026 percentage?

Ans. Add your marks in First Language, Second Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. Divide the total by 525 and multiply by 100. For example, if your total across these five subjects is 430, your percentage is (430 ÷ 525) × 100 = 81.90%.

Ques. Will excluding the third language increase my SSLC percentage?

Ans. It depends on how you performed in the third language relative to your other subjects. If your third language score was below your average in the other subjects, your percentage under the 525-mark system will be higher than under the old 625-mark system. If you scored very well in the third language, your new percentage may be marginally lower.

Ques. What if I fail the third language exam in SSLC 2026?

Ans. Since the third language does not form part of the 525-mark aggregate, failing in only this subject does not make you fail the SSLC result overall. However, the fail status is recorded separately on your marksheet for the third language paper.
