Academic Qualification

  • Academic Background: A high school diploma or equivalent for freshman applicants.
  • GPA Requirement:
    • The average GPA in prerequisite courses for students admitted to the major in recent years has been 3.4.
    • To be considered for admission, students should have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA in the prerequisite courses.
    • Students with a GPA of less than 3.0 are typically not admitted.
  • Academic Courses (A-G): Completion of 15 year-long academic courses including:
    • 2 years of History.
    • 4 years of English (composition and literature).
    • 3 years of Mathematics (including Algebra and Geometry).
    • 2 years of Science (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics).
    • 2 years of a Second Language.
    • 1 year of Visual & Performing Arts.
    • 1 additional course from any of the above categories.
  • Prerequisite Courses: 
    • Introduction to Economics: ECON 1 or ECON 2.
    • Calculus: MATH 1A or MATH 16A, and MATH 1B or MATH 16B.
    • Statistics: STAT 20, STAT 21, STAT W21, STAT 88/DATA C88S, STAT 131A, STAT 135, or STAT/DATA C140.
    • Intermediate Economics: ECON 100A or ECON 101A, ECON 100B or ECON 101B, and ECON 140 or ECON 141
    • NOTE: At least one Math/Statistics course and one Intermediate Economics course must be completed at UC Berkeley.
 Country Specific Requirement
  •  Year X and XII (State Board or CBSE) with average marks above 70%.

English Language Requirement

  • TOEFL iBT: A minimum score of 80 is required, with a preference for scores above 100.
  • IELTS: 6.5.
  • Duolingo English Test: 115.
  • Alternative Proof: Completion of 3+ years of secondary education in English can also demonstrate proficiency.
 Exemptions for English Language Requirement

 Applicants may be exempt from providing English proficiency test scores if they have:

  • U.S. High School Education: Completed at least 3 years of high school in the U.S. with English as the language of instruction.
  • ACT Score: Achieved a score of 30 or higher on the ACT English Language Arts section.
  • SAT Score: Achieved a score of 680 or higher on the SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section.
  • College-Level English Course: Completed a transferable English composition course with a grade of C or better.
