San Jose State Biomedical Engineering Scholarships
SJSU offers limited scholarships to international undergraduates. Merit-based aid is the primary avenue; need-based aid is not available for international students.
| Scholarship | Eligibility | Annual Award USD | Annual Award INR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global Spartan Scholarship | GPA 3.3+; available to all international students | US$1,000 to US$5,000 | INR 9,530 to INR 47,650 |
| College of Science Scholarship (Biological Science focus) | GPA 3.0+; department nomination required | US$500 to US$2,000 | INR 4,765 to INR 19,060 |
| Engineering Department Merit Award | GPA 3.5+ in major; STEM background | Varies; up to US$3,000 annually | Up to INR 28,590 |
Source: SJSU International Student Services and Scholarships Office.
A Global Spartan Scholarship of US$3,000 annually (INR 28,590) offsets 19% of annual tuition and fees. Over four years, this reduces total cost by US$12,000 (INR 1,14,360). Combined with summer internship earnings (US$2,000 to US$3,000 over three months), a well-qualified Indian applicant can offset roughly 25% to 30% of living costs without external loans.
- Merit scholarships are awarded at admission; no separate application required beyond the main SJSU application.
- Renewal each year requires maintaining your scholarship GPA (typically 3.0 to 3.3 depending on award).
- International students are not eligible for federal US loans; explore Indian education loans (SBI, HDFC, ICICI) or state-backed schemes.
Scholarship reality: Most SJSU international biomedical engineering students do not receive scholarships; only top 10% to 15% of the admitted cohort qualify. Plan your finances assuming zero aid, then treat any scholarship as a bonus.

These are gross figures. Federal income tax (22% federal + 5% state average) reduces take-home by approximately 27%; use a US tax calculator to model your net income. Many biomedical engineers use benefits like Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) to reduce taxable income. After 3 years of F-1 work, visa sponsorship for H-1B skilled worker status is common if your employer is willing.
- Entry-level roles are concentrated in San Jose, San Francisco, and Los Angeles; salaries are highest in the Bay Area.
- Medical device internships (paid, during summers) pay US$18 to US$28 per hour; prior work experience strengthens your entry-level offer.
- Medtronic, Abbott, and Stryker actively recruit at SJSU; many hire interns into full-time roles upon graduation.
ROI reality: Your four-year total cost is US$62,400 (INR 5,95,000); payback period is approximately 14 to 16 months on a US$60,000 starting salary. This is one of the fastest ROI pathways for Indian engineering graduates in the US.
United States Visa for Biomedical Engineering Students
India-trained biomedical engineering graduates are eligible for the F-1 (Student) visa. Upon graduation, you can transition to the Optional Practical Training (OPT) work permit, which leads to skilled-worker (H-1B) sponsorship and eventual permanent residency.
- F-1 visa permits up to 20 hours per week of on-campus work; internships, research, and co-ops are permitted under a parallel work authorization called Curricular Practical Training (CPT).
- OPT (Optional Practical Training) is a 12-month post-graduation work permit; biomedical engineering qualifies for a 24-month STEM extension, bringing total OPT duration to 36 months (three years).
- H-1B skilled-worker sponsorship requires employer backing and an annual salary threshold of US$60,000+; biomedical engineers typically clear this hurdle easily.
- Spouse/dependent visas (H-4) are available; your spouse can apply for work authorization (EAD) once you file for H-1B sponsorship or green card.
Visa reality: STEM OPT extension for biomedical engineering gives you three years to secure H-1B sponsorship or convert to another visa category. Most SJSU biomedical engineering graduates secure H-1B sponsorship within two years.
San Jose State’s biomedical engineering program is ideal for Indian applicants seeking hands-on industry exposure, direct access to Silicon Valley employers, and a clear pathway to post-study work. The 78% international acceptance rate, moderate GPA threshold (3.0+), and low English test requirements (TOEFL 61+) make admission achievable for well-prepared candidates. Strong chemistry and physics backgrounds, early WES credential submission, and summer internships during undergrad significantly improve both graduation outcomes and post-graduation employment prospects.
Biomedical Engineering FAQs
Ques. Is San Jose State Biomedical Engineering ABET-accredited?

- Location is a key factor for choosing SJSU
- The Faculty to Student ratio is very good
- Cutting edge research goes on campus
Dislikes
- Campus Size is a thing I disliked, being in the downtown still it is a big campus
- Few courses have a very rigorous Course work
- Classes registration at the time of semester start is an big hassle
- I just live in front of the campus and there are various websites and portals where students get to see open apartment spaces and SJSU also helps students find Off Campus Housing and make the process easy for the students. 101 San Fernando, Colonade, The Grad and 360 Residencies Apartments are the closest ones to the campus and a large Indian Student community stays there.
