Brown University fees for Indian students vary widely by study level, program, and mode of study. According to Brown’s Bulletin on Financial Information, the annual tuition fees for UG programs in the 2025-26 session are 71,700 USD (65.91 lakhs INR). This applies to all the undergraduate programs offered by Brown.

For master’s programs, Brown University follows a per-course fee model due to the program structure. Unlike undergraduate programs, master’s programs are designed in such a way that students need to complete a certain number of courses (also known as credits/ modules) in a year.

For example:

The MS Data Science program has a per-course fee of 9,851 USD (9.05 lakhs INR), and students are required to complete 4 courses in a year. Hence, the annual tuition fees for the MS Data Science program will be 4*9,851= 39,404 USD (36.22 lakhs INR)

However, doctoral tuition fees are charged at a standard rate of 71,700 USD (65.91 lakhs INR) per year. Brown’s Graduate School offers incoming doctoral students 5-6 years of guaranteed financial support, including a stipend, tuition remission, health-services fee, and health- and dental-insurance subsidies.

Brown University Financial Aid

Brown University offers need-based financial aid to international students only; there are no merit-based scholarships available.

  • Full demonstrated need met: Brown meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for admitted students who apply for aid during the admission process. This is provided through scholarship only- no loans are included in University aid packages.
  • Need-blind policy update: Starting with the Class of 2029 (applicants entering in fall 2025 or later), Brown is need-blind for international students. This means your financial need does not affect admission decisions. (For earlier classes, it was need-aware.)
  • Aid is need-based only: No awards are given for academic merit, athletics, or other talents. Eligibility depends solely on family financial circumstances.
  • Application process: To be considered, apply for financial aid at the same time as your admission application. Required forms include the CSS Profile (via College Board), non-custodial parent profile if applicable, and supporting documents like international tax/income records.
  • How it offsets costs: For families with low income (e.g., under certain thresholds), parent contribution can be zero or very low. Aid covers tuition, fees, housing, food, and other expenses up to the full demonstrated need, significantly reducing or eliminating out-of-pocket costs for eligible students.

Important note: Brown University provides very different funding structures for graduate (master's) and doctoral (PhD) programs. Most international PhD students receive 5 years of full funding, including tuition remission, stipend, health, and dental insurance subsidies. However, funding for master's students is much more limited and not guaranteed. There is no central or guaranteed aid for master's degrees. Student reviews on the community platforms (like Reddit, Quora) cite that one must contact the specific program's Director of Graduate Study (DGS) for details on aid in the intended master's program.
