Master of Arts in Religion (MAR) Degree:

• Offered as comprehensive and concentrated programs.
• Both are two-year, 48-credit programs.

Comprehensive MAR:

• Prepares students for lay ministry or service roles such as secondary teaching, chaplaincy, non-profit management, and religion writing.
• Includes coursework in biblical studies, systematic theology, liturgics, and historical Christianity, with electives in broader cultural contexts.
• Allows courses in other Yale professional schools and departments.

Concentrated MAR:

• Prepares students for doctoral study.
• Specializations include: Asian Religions, Hebrew Bible, Black Religion, Ethics, History of Christianity, Latinx & Latin American Christianity, Liturgics, New Testament, Practical Theology, Philosophical Theology, Religion & the Arts, Religion & Ecology, Second Temple Judaism, Theology, Women’s/Gender/Sexuality Studies, World Christianity/Missions.
• Requires background in the chosen discipline (undergraduate major or minor).
• Students may be admitted to the comprehensive program if lacking necessary preparation but can potentially transfer to the concentrated program after a year.
