Course Curriculum

  • The course curriculum is difficult; it is very theory-based. The faculty members are very research-focused, which means they don't pay much attention to the course curriculum. Classes are generally 3 hours long (one class per week) or 1 and a half hours long (2 classes per week). They can be there from 8:30 am to 11:30 am or in the afternoon from 12:10 pm to 3:10 pm or 2 pm to 5 pm.
  • The number of students varies from class to class; if it's an undergrad + grad class, then there can be around 100 students. Or else general class size is 30 students. Indian students are around half of the class size.

Fees

  • Fees for each semester are around 15k dollars. if i give the breakdown of my spring 2025 fee structure:
    • Technology fee – $250
    • Health insurance fee – $1709
    • Student fee – $891
    • Course/Other fees – $250
    • School fee – $216
    • Tuition fee – $13149
    • Total – $16420.50
  • The fee is charged credit-wise; one course is 3 credits. So for each subject in spring, I paid $4383. In summer, I took up one course, and my fees were around 4,215.00 for tuition and the other was around $162.
  • Monthly expenses can vary, but my rent is around 650 (excluding electricity), my Electricity bill is around $40, groceries are around $100, and Wi-Fi and home insurance are around $15, and additional miscellaneous expenses for parties, eating out, and travel can be around an additional $100-150.

  • The course difficulty was alright. We had a bunch of courses to choose from that were interdepartmental too so that was great in terms of exposure and knowledge as we weren’t restricted.
  • There were mandatory courses but that was just a few. The course was a mix of both practical and theory however, I would’ve preferred better contextual knowledge and understanding before starting us out on practicals.
  • The amount of classes depends on your credits, I had 5 classes in total weekly so it was easy and chill. 90% of our class was Indian and some classes had 8 people while some had like 30.

Fees

  • The fee was credit based. Tuition was roughly around 18k (inc of charges) for 9 credits or more per semester. I didn’t take a hostel but stayed off campus where the rent plus utilities were roughly 1k per month.
  • Monthly expenses were around 1.5k
  • There were no major transportation costs as Rutgers provides free shuttle within the campus and my place was walking distance. Food was the major expense but even for that Rutgers provided free groceries.

  • I connected with people through LinkedIn and spoke to a few people for accommodation leads. After conducting some field research, I gave them my preferred location and renting limit.
  • Initially, it was very challenging to get an accommodation since I wasn't getting frequent replies. I joined WhatsApp groups to receive regular housing advertisements, which helped quite a bit. I finally got a recommendation through a friend I reached out to through LinkedIn for a place to stay.

Sometimes the course seems to go by a little fast but the faculty and TA are really good about doing their best to help you succeed. Midterm week is always very rough though but it's manageable if you do a good job spending time to study.

Fees

Fees are standard like having a meal plan freshman year and then textbooks and transportation. Tuition and housing are better compared to other schools.

It's good, it covers a lot and I'm learning a lot about the disciplines and the jobs that are available. I'm looking forward to all the classes I'll be taking in the future.

Students applying for admission in the MS Computer Science program of Rutgers University, must have undergraduate program in Computer Science, or at least taken the core prerequisite courses. The mean GPA for the last admitted batch was 3.62. Along with that you must also have a valid GRE score.
