The best journalists can promote dialogue, advance justice, encourage civic engagement, and inform the public about major problems or issues facing society. As a journalism undergraduate student, we will teach you to work across all media platforms – print, broadcast and online - and you will practice your craft in a state-of-the arts Media Center and in Los Angeles, a stimulating urban laboratory. You will learn from top professionals, including Emmy and Pulitzer Prize winners, who have worked at the nation’s most respected news organizations.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the Journalism degree program you should be able to:

  • Understand and apply the principles and laws of freedom of speech and press for the country.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the history and role of professionals and institutions in shaping communications.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of gender, race ethnicity, sexual orientation and, as appropriate, other forms of diversity in domestic society in relation to mass communications.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of peoples and cultures and of the significance and impact of mass communications in a global society.
  • Understand concepts and apply theories in the use and presentation of images and information.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of professional ethical principles and work ethically in pursuit of truth, accuracy, fairness and diversity.
  • Think critically, creatively and independently.
  • Conduct research and evaluate information by methods appropriate to the communications professions in which you work.
  • Write correctly and clearly in forms and styles appropriate for the communications professions, audiences and purposes you serve (deadline/short-form and non-deadline/long-form).
  • Critically evaluate your own work and that of others for accuracy and fairness, clarity, appropriate style and grammatical correctness.
  • Apply basic numerical and statistical concepts.
  • Apply tools and technologies appropriate for the communications professions in which you work (text, audio, video, web).
  • Demonstrate competency in leadership.

GRE qualification is not mandatory to apply and get admission in the MS Pharmaceutical Sciences program at the University of Southern California. However, it is mandatory for all international students with English as a secondary language to submit a valid ELP test score to prove their proficiency in English language.
