University of Southern California Bachelor of Arts [B.A] Law, History, and Culture is a four-year undergraduate degree offered full-time on-campus in Los Angeles. The programme requires no prior legal background and accepts international students with strong academic records and English proficiency. Annual tuition is US$75,384 (INR 71.71 Lakhs); total annual cost including room, board, and fees is US$103,162 (INR 98.22 Lakhs). Intakes are Fall and Spring, with applications rolling through the academic year.

This degree trains students in legal history, constitutional law, cultural theory, and policy analysis through a humanities lens. The programme is distinctive for its integration of law, history, and cultural studies rather than pre-law preparation alone. Students graduate equipped for graduate law school, policy roles, international relations, cultural diplomacy, education, and research careers. The ideal applicant is intellectually curious about systems of governance, cultural institutions, and how law shapes society.

  • Small seminars led by scholars active in law and history research; fewer than 25 students per upper-level class.
  • Study abroad partnerships in Europe, Asia, and Latin America; many students spend a semester overseas.
  • Access to USC’s research libraries and policy centers; internships with NGOs, courts, and cultural institutions.

Current Admission Status

Applications for the Spring 2027 intake are expected to open. International student deadline: 15 October 2026.

For Indian applicants, allow 4 to 6 weeks for WES credential evaluation before submitting your application. Spring intake offers rolling admissions, so earlier submission increases admission odds.

Cost of Living in Los Angeles for Law, History, and Culture Students

Expense Category Monthly USD Monthly INR
Housing (off-campus shared) US$800–US$1,200 INR 76,168 to INR 1.14 Lakhs
Groceries and Food US$400–US$600 INR 38,084 to INR 57,126

This offsets living costs significantly. On-campus jobs include library assistant, research assistant, and student services roles.

University of Southern California Bachelor of Arts Law, History, and Culture Admission

USC is highly selective and requires strong academics from all applicants. International students must meet the same standards as domestic students with additional English proficiency documentation.

Admission Requirement Typical Range / Requirement
High School GPA (Unweighted) 3.7 to 4.0
SAT Composite (if submitting) 1470 to 1570
ACT Composite (if submitting) 33 to 35
English Language Proficiency Test Required TOEFL iBT, IELTS, or Duolingo
Admission Selectivity (Fall 2025) Approximately 4 to 6 percent
  • USC does not require SAT or ACT for 2026-27; standardized tests are optional but recommended for competitiveness.
  • Demonstrated interest in law, history, politics, or cultural studies strengthens your application; highlight relevant coursework and extracurriculars.
  • Essays are a critical component; USC seeks applicants who can articulate why they want to study at USC specifically.
  • USC is ranked 11th globally by QS and THE; the overall academic rigor and peer network are exceptionally strong.

English Language Proficiency (ELP) Requirements

International students whose native language is not English must submit proof of proficiency.

Test Minimum Overall Score Minimum Component Scores
TOEFL iBT 90 Reading 20, Listening 20, Speaking 20, Writing 20
IELTS Academic 6.5 No single band below 6.0
Duolingo English Test 120 No section below 105
  • TOEFL is the most widely accepted test by USC; prepare for 6 to 8 weeks if you are aiming for the 90+ range typical of admits.
  • IELTS is also fully accepted; Indian students often perform well on IELTS because it assesses British English conventions.
  • Duolingo is the fastest pathway; some Indian applicants complete it in 2 to 3 weeks with focused daily practice.
Tip for Indian students: Most competitive Indian applicants to USC score TOEFL iBT 100 or above or IELTS 7.0 to 7.5. Aim higher than the minimum to strengthen your candidacy in a highly competitive pool.

University of Southern California Bachelor of Arts Law, History, and Culture Application 2027

The application timeline is critical. USC uses rolling admissions for many intakes, meaning earlier submission can improve your chances.

Intake Application Deadline (International) Expected Decision Status
Fall 2027 Expected: 2 January 2027 March to April 2027 Expected to Open
Spring 2027 15 October 2026 November to December 2026 Rolling (Open)
  • Submit via USC’s Common Application portal; you do not apply directly to the BA Law, History, and Culture programme—you apply to USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and select the major during enrollment.
  • WES credential evaluation (for transcripts from Indian schools) takes 4 to 6 weeks; submit your evaluation request as soon as you decide to apply.
  • For Spring 2027, rolling admissions favours early submission; apply by mid-September to maximise admission odds.
Application tip: Your personal statement should connect your interests in law and history to real-world issues. Mention a specific policy debate, historical event, or cultural institution that motivated you to apply.

University of Southern California Bachelor of Arts Law, History, and Culture Scholarships 2027

USC offers merit-based scholarships to international students based on academic excellence and leadership. Need-based aid is not available to international students, so merit scholarships are your primary funding source.

Scholarship Type Annual Award (USD) Annual Award (INR) Eligibility
Trustee Scholarship (Full Ride) Up to US$103,162 Up to INR 98.22 Lakhs Exceptional academic and extracurricular record; 4–8 awarded per year across the university

International Scholar Award US$10,000 to US$25,000 INR 9.52 Lakhs to INR 23.80 Lakhs Merit-based; open to all international applicants meeting academic thresholds
  • Merit scholarships are awarded during admission review; no separate scholarship application is required.
  • Even a Presidential Scholarship of US$50,000 (INR 47.61 Lakhs) covers only about half of annual costs, so plan for loans or family contribution.
  • Some Indian students combine USC merit aid with external scholarships from organisations like HDFC Bank, ICICI, and the Inlaks Foundation.
Scholarship reality: Fewer than 5 percent of international undergraduates at USC receive full-ride scholarships. Budget conservatively and explore external Indian scholarships early.

Graduate Studies (History, Public Policy, Library Science) N/A (Student Status) N/A 50 to 60 percent of BA Law, History, and Culture graduates pursue Master’s or PhD degrees

Source: USC Career Center employment outcomes survey (2024–25 cohort) and Bureau of Labor Statistics.

  • Law school attendance is common; 40 to 50 percent of graduates apply to law school within two years of graduation.
  • Many international students pursue advanced degrees in the US before returning to India, where US JD and Master’s degrees open doors in Indian law firms and corporations.
  • Salaries are gross figures; US federal and California state income tax reduces take-home by 25 to 35 percent depending on gross income.
ROI reality: A BA Law, History, and Culture degree alone does not guarantee a six-figure career. Most high-earning graduates (lawyers, diplomats) have completed a Master’s or JD. Budget for 5 to 7 years of study and investment if law school is your goal.

Check Out: US Post-Study Work Visa and OPT

United States Visa and Study Pathway Law, History, and Culture 2027

International students in the USA are sponsored on an F-1 Student Visa. After graduation, you are eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows you to work in the United States for up to 12 months. Post-study work pathways vary by field; humanities graduates typically do not qualify for STEM OPT extensions.

  • F-1 visa duration is "Duration of Status"—you remain in the US as long as you are enrolled full-time or in an authorised work period (OPT).
  • After graduation, OPT (12 months standard) allows full-time employment in any US role related to your degree; you do not need employer sponsorship to begin OPT.
  • After OPT, H-1B visa sponsorship is available for roles in education, policy, international relations, and the nonprofit sector; H-1B requires an employer to file your application and approval rates are moderate (60 to 70 percent).
  • Green Card (Permanent Residence) timelines are lengthy for most career paths; expect 5 to 10 years via employment visa.
Visa reality: Humanities and policy graduates often return to India after OPT rather than pursue H-1B sponsorship. Return rates are high because Indian employers value US degrees and OPT experience without the green card wait.

Bachelor of Arts Law, History, and Culture FAQs

Ques. Do I need to have studied law in high school to apply to the BA Law, History, and Culture programme at USC?

Ans. No, USC does not require prior law coursework. The programme is designed for students new to law and history who are intellectually curious. Strong performance in humanities subjects (English, history, social studies) and demonstrated writing skills are valued more than specific legal background.

Ques. Is the BA Law, History, and Culture programme different from a pre-law degree?

Ans. Yes. This is not a pre-law degree; it is a liberal arts degree in law, history, and cultural studies. You study legal systems, constitutional history, and cultural institutions alongside humanities electives. Many graduates pursue law school, but others enter policy, education, journalism, or nonprofit work directly. You are not limited to law school pathways.

Ques. Can I work on-campus during my studies, and will it affect my F-1 visa status?

Ans. Yes, F-1 students can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during the academic term and full-time during official breaks (summer, winter). Work does not jeopardise your visa status. On-campus wages are US$15 to US$18 per hour (INR 1,428 to INR 1,714 per hour), which covers living costs partially for many students.

Ques. What is the acceptance rate for Indian students applying to this USC programme?

Ans. USC’s overall undergraduate acceptance rate is 4 to 6 percent. Indian applicants face similar acceptance rates because USC does not reserve separate quotas by country. Competitiveness for Indian students is very high; exceptional grades (3.9+), strong test scores, and distinctive essays are necessary. Your profile is evaluated against top applicants worldwide.

Ques. Can I change my major after admission, and are there related programmes I should know about?

Ans. Yes, USC allows major changes. Many students start in Law, History, and Culture but migrate to Political Science, Economics, or International Relations based on interests. You also can double-major or add a minor in fields like Philosophy, Comparative Literature, or Global Studies. Changing major does not cost extra fees and does not delay graduation if completed by end of second year.

Is a BA in Law, History, and Culture at USC right for you? This degree is ideal if you are intellectually engaged with law as a cultural and historical phenomenon rather than only as a professional pathway. You thrive in seminars with diverse perspectives, perform well in essay-heavy courses, and are curious about how societies structure themselves. USC’s location in Los Angeles, global student body, and research opportunities make it a strong choice for future lawyers, policy makers, educators, and cultural leaders.

GRE qualification is not mandatory to apply and get admission in the MS Pharmaceutical Sciences program at the University of Southern California. However, it is mandatory for all international students with English as a secondary language to submit a valid ELP test score to prove their proficiency in English language.
