Course Curriculum

8

  • The difficulty level of my course curriculum is easier than my Indian undergraduate experience at Manipal Institute of Technology. It is a mix of both theoretical and practical.
  • The most positive aspect of my course is that in my fourth semester, I can opt for a co-op program through which the university gets me an internship which can be converted to a full time job offer if I perform well in that.

Admission Experience

  • I applied to 4 universities.
  1. Hofstra university,
  2. Pace university,
  3. New York Institute of Technology (Long Island) and
  4. Rochester Institute of Technology.
  • I was accepted by Hofstra and Pace university. Waitlisted by NYIT and rejected by RIT.
  • In my opinion, I was not accepted in Rochester Institute of technology maybe because of lack of professional experience, which is a requirement for many MBA programs or it may have been due to an average cgpa in undergrad degree.
  1.  I chose Hofstra University because it was very close to new york city, and I wanted to live near new york city. NYIT (long island) was in a forest kind of area far from the city, and RIT was also far from NYC. The facilities and campus at Hofstra was also a factor in choosing it because I wanted a good campus during my stay here.
  2. I just filled the application and got the acceptance in around one month. There was no interview.
  • I applied to the spring 2024 because that was the nearest to the time I decided to study abroad and I did not want to waste any time. I applied to Hofstra university around August and got acceptance letter in about 1.5 months. There was no interview. As soon as I got my I20, I applied for the USA F1 visa. I got a slot for 2nd December for visa and my classes were supposed to start on 29 January 2024.

Class Schedule

8

  • The negative aspect of the course is that the frequency of the classes is low in my opinion.
  • I only have 3 classes per week of 2 hours each.

Faculty

10

  • In my course, the average faculty to student ration would be around 1:30. This is a good ratio I would say because the professor is able to give attention to every student and the class does not feel crowded.
  • The teaching methodology is very polished as the professors give good examples and also show relevant videos in class that enrich the experience. I think the course content, complemented with some practice is sufficient for securing a job in my  field which is data analytics.
  • Yes, there are some faculties that help students in finding job opportunities.
  • I admire my advanced quantitative analytics professor Kyoung mo kang because his teaching style is great, he breaks down difficult concepts in easy to grasp chunks and gives meaningful feedback on the homework.

Campus Life

10

  •  My college has only one campus.
  • The facilities include, a central library, sports fields such as baseball stadium, hockey stadium, football ground. There is a swimming pool, gym, badminton court. In-house medical center.
  • Fall festival is the major campus festival in my university. The clubs include graduate management association, women in cybersecurity, Hofstra Marketing club etc.
  • There are weekly sports events for basketball and football where players compete with different universities.

Part Time Jobs

  • Few students secure the TA, RA positions, the pay is around 6 credits worth of fee which is approx $10,200/semester. Other on-campus jobs include resident assistance which is comparatively easy to get job. It pays around $12/hour.
  • There is a barista job at an eatery called HOFUSA that gives around $12 per hour. There is a tutor position that gives $12-15 per hour. There is also a computer science student technician position that gives $20/hour.
  • Maximum 20 hours of work is allowed per week by the university, but it depends position to position. Some positions only allow 8 to 12 hours per week.
  • It is quite difficult to get an on-campus part time job, but if you apply early and keep yourself update with the opportunities then it becomes easier. I get to work 20 hours per week in my computer science student technician job which I applied for as soon as I got the I-20 from the university.
  • Indian students work on all kinds of positions part time. They typically earn around $12 to $15 per hour. It is difficult to secure a part time job because there is very low positions for very high demand. The usual process to apply for part time jobs is to use the web portal called handshake where all the university's open positions are listed. To get an TA/RA position, you should network with the professors.

Placement

6

  • I do not have a proof for the percentage of students securing jobs but I would say around 70% secures employment within 6 months of completing the course.
  • The average salary range that the students can expect after graduation is $40,000 to $100,000 per year. Northwell Health is an organization that hires a lot of graduates from my program.
  • Students usually follow all kinds of ways to find a job since its difficult. From networking with the current employees to cold emailing, they try everything.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • In my first semester I opted for on-campus hostel, which is the graduate residence hall, and after that I moved out and took a room on a rented house.
  • I found my accommodation through a local real estate listing called nassaucountyoffcampus.com
The monthly rent on my current house is $1150 per month.
  • I get a room with double bed and plenty of space, sofa, study table, center table, cloth stand; I have a common kitchen and toilet. The rent also includes utilities like electricity, wifi, water and heating.
  • I faced no challenges in securing accommodation because I always search in advance.
  • My recommendation would be to not opt on-campus housing as it is very expensive and use the website I mentioned to get a room on rent. You can get a single room for $800 or a double room like mine for $1200.

Exams

  • I gave the IELTS and GMAT exam. Since I was applying for MBA, I preferred the GMAT exam. You can also give GRE if you want, especially if you are applying for Master of Science.
  • The university also considers other factors like Undergraduate degree CGPA, and work experience.
  • CV and LOR were required. Although I don't know what role they play in my acceptance.
  • I was not asked to give any interview.

Fees

  • $60,000 for full MBA Course (2 years), and around $8,800 per semester for hostel (graduate residence hall).
  • The fee is semester wise or you can also request for a payment plan where you can pay in installments.
  • Since I live in New York, therefore the price of regular grocery items to taxis is very high.
  • The monthly expense if a person is living outside the university on rented room is $800 for the room + $300 for food and grocery (assuming that the student is not registering for campus eatery program and cooking at home; campus eatery is around $2600 per semester).

Scholarship

  • I did not achieve a scholarship. Students who have a very good cgpa in undergraduation have a high chance of getting a scholarship.
  • I only heard of one friend who got scholarship at admission time.
  • It is very rare to get a scholarship after getting admitted as they say that they got less funding this year. But there is a scholarship page where the university has named various scholarships, so I encourage everyone to ask for them.
