What Students Say
Likes
- Location is near to financial city New York, Faculty is very much knowledgeable also I have closely worked with one of the faculty and TA.
- They conduct regional events and most of the events are related to India .
- Community is huge 90% are from Indian and 70% people are Telugu people only. Extracurricular involvement is more
Dislikes
- Very much cold weather as it is near to beach, sometimes no proper information from support, not every one but few of the members are not friendly as I faced at financial services while fee payment.
- Student to faculty ratio is more than 50+. As most of the community is Indian, I didn't felt like new experience also very less involvement with other country citizens and especially very less involvement with US citizens.
- Also everyone says that area is not that safe not sure why, after my transfer, I heard that there was a gun fire happened in university burnam hall which is food court of university.
Course Curriculum
- My course curriculum doesn't seems to be that much difficult as I have same computer science background in my bachelors. If you have basic skills on computer and any programming knowledge, one can easily come up. Also the course curriculum depends on subject. For instance, a programming subject more concentrated on practical and some times both. Positive aspects having the in demand syllabus with updated content.
- One can enroll for 3 courses per semester. Each class max has 3 hrs time in a week. Each course can be 3 hrs at once of a day in a week. sometimes scheduled for 1:30 hrs for 2 days in a week. It depends on faculty and subject. Average class strength is 55. 90% of students are Indians only.
Admission Experience
-
I applied to over 6 universities:
- University of Bridgeport,
- University of New Heaven,
- NJIT,
- Saint Joseph's University,
- University at Buffalo,
- Wilmington University.
- Out of these, only the University of New Heaven was rejected and everything else was accepted. I'm not sure why, as they didn't mention any specific reason. I'm particularly thinking that due to the last-minute application.
- I got acceptance from the University of Bridgeport and NJIT. Remaining were waitlisted but later got confirmation after getting into UB.
- I particularly wanted to choose universities from Eastern Zone, so I have given list to college dunia but UB was not at the preference initially. Later I explored about the university and they also offered 4K$ scholarship. Also I heard that university has very good community. The faculty was also good. So this made me in preference as it is also in the zone where I'm looking. Later after my first semester, I have transferred to other university and here, I'm feeling better and very good experience. The initial steps were common like submitting the application and submitting necessary details and proofs like certificates, degree details, personal details and everything. Some universities specifically ask's WES evolution and GRE scores. Any how this university waved GRE requirement. If I have it, they asked to submit it, I did it. This was taken care by college dunia on behalf of me. Thanks to collegedunia.
- I applied for spring 2024 intake. Fall is the major time to begin masters program. Spring is also a good time if you are well prepared. There might be less opportunities for spring if you are looking for on campus opportunities. Took 1 month to get admission. I got my admission in end of October. Most of the deadlines ends in mid month of november since November and December is the holiday season.
Faculty
- Minimum faculty to student ratio is 1:40 and max is 1:120. Depending on the weather conditions and campus environment, the in person classes might scheduled for online. The course content and teaching approach doesn't guarantee to prepare for searching for job. One should have atleast basic knowledge on all the stuff like basic understanding on computer environment, programming knowledge and if you have work experience in the specific field, then you should definitely come up. Faculty member's doesn't assist in finding the jobs. But they can recommend. You must show your interest in your specific field. There are some events that would conducted by university. You need to register for that for better assistance for finding jobs. Don't get for the easy subject or outdated courses. Go for the in-demand courses and that might help you to achieve your goals.
Campus Life
- The university has one campus but have different buildings. It is around 56 acres. This is located at 126 park avenue, Bridgeport, CT. This university has library also you can access from your phone if you are looking for any specific books. It has huge play ground for foot ball, swimming, basket ball court, food court and indoor activities hall. This university gives priorities to extracurricular activities as well like any thing along with cultural events.
Part Time Jobs
- I assume that one person from each class has the TA. For each faculty, they have 2 TA's. Pay range is 900 per month. The other on campus opportunities like support assistant, lab proctor, etc. There are other opportunities in food court and other desks. I was not exactly sure with names but yes there are positions. Any TA can able to work for only 20 hours in a week. Not more than that. This TA positions can able to secure if they have good skill on that specific subject for the position or the subject they are applying for. The professors can also look into their background before providing the opportunity.
- Indian students prefer to work on campus. Basically you can work up to 15 to 20 hours per week and pay is around 15$ per hour. For the new member, it is not that easy to secure. Because many of the indian students are in this university and they will rush for this on campus jobs. If they have any referral like know friends or relatives who are already working, then, they can able to secure form their referral. You can directly ask at the front desk if they have any. The official way is to apply those using hand shake.
Placement
- What I'm seeing is currently market is in recission many of the employers are terminating their employees due to their cost cutting. Mostly 10% of the students can able to acquire full time opportunities, remaining are going for consultancies for profile marketing. What I'm seeing is hardly after trying for 1 year, students can able to get the jobs. Most of the employers are also looking for the person with atleast 8+ years of experience. What I say is come for master's program with atleast 1 or 2 years of experience, this work experience can help them to secure the job faster.
- The average salary range is between 50k - 125k$ per annum.
Students can able to find jobs using job portals like linkedin, indeed, dice or handshake. Some times there are some community events happen in university, try to attend them so there is a chance that you can get a referral for position.
Most of the top companies like oracle, google, facebook, Nvidia, etc will hire graduates but the competition is very high.
Accommodation
- I found my accommodation from university groups. Try to join the university or community groups in whatsapp, telegram or facebook. These platforms might help them finding the accommodations. If this platforms doesn't helps you, then you can also search for agents online like suleka is the one. I lived in individual house and monthly rent is about 2000$ with a group of 6 people. My share is 350$ + expenses. The minimum monthly rent is about 1100+$ for an apartment and it goes high depending on the facilities you choose. The challanges that I faced while finding my accommodation was every agent asked to sign for rental agreement which is mandatory in US. Initially I didn't find enough or proper persons to share the accommodation. Later I found some one who already leased and looking for person to share. So I felt like better deal and moved for it. Universities also provide shared accommodation in campus. You can also go for it which could range 400$ or above. My campus is about 7 miles away. I used to go by public transport which could take 30 mins to reach. If you have own vehicle, then you can reach with in 10 mins. Public transport sometimes take more time depending on the availability.
Exams
- I took Duolingo and GRE tests and submitted to university. SoP, LOR, CV is also mandatory. There was no interview part in my application process. I believe SoP is mandatory. Almost majority of the universities accepts all the language tests. I see most of the universities including top universities are also waved GRE. You need LOR from your previous institutions. If you have work experience in any of the organization, you can also submit LOR from your working organizations.
Fees
- The fee is charged based on how many credits you enroll. For each credit, it's 1045$ and there are also other general fees. Insurance for 6-7 months for spring and 1 year for fall. All this fees details are available in university website. You must enroll 9 credits for each semester for spring and fall or it is first semester for you. Summer you can enroll for one subject online if you are interested to pursue summer course.
Scholarship
- Yes, I received 4000$ merit scholarship that was mentioned in my offer letter. This scholarship, I can use 2000 for each semester. As mentioned in the name merit, I have very good GPA in my under graduate and good score in GRE. Also I have working experience as I have worked in big MNC.
- I saw that my batchmates also received 2-3K $ scholarships. Maximum I see it is 5K$. 50 to 70% of the students receive scholarship if they have very good academic backgrounds. During the second year of their master's, student's can receive a scholarship if they maintain a GPA above 3.5 in the first year.
