  • It is not difficult, but it is challenging to incorporate new research. It is more practical-based, but we also need to study a lot theoretically.
  • The positive is that we gained more independent thinking skills along with research aptitude and experimental skills with problem-solving.
  • There are no classes; we just need to spend our time in research labs. Yes, we need to do some coursework, but it is minimal. May 10 lectures of 1 hour each over 2 years.
  • We are not in class; we are in a cohort here. I have 18 of them.
  • 6 Indian students

Fees

  • When offered a position in the UK, you will always receive the expected expenses in your offer letter.
  • For example, here is how it is in St Andrews: the international fee for PhD is £26,270 per year, and the living cost, including food, is £1000-1200 per month.
  • Fees can be paid in instalments (in my case, my funding covers it).
  • My monthly expenses is as rent is £500, food £300 for food, £100 for transport and £200 for other)

  • So, for your first year, you'll be able to get university accommodation in dorms. But after that, you are not guaranteed university accommodation.
  • There is an accommodation crisis in St Andrews with the uni hasn't been able to help much. Private rentals are hard to get as there is a lot of competition and the prices are also extremely high. Because of this, some students have to live in nearby towns and commute.
  • Best way to get private housing is to contact the agent companies, registering with them early enough in your first year would be best. Approaching seniors who are graduating to ask about housing is also smart. 55rent is a good company that does rentals.

  • My course was mostly based on presentations and theory. Group and individual coursework weighed a lot.
  • Positive is definitely the course structure, the way of teaching and no stress in education. Not pressurized with loads of coursework either.
  • Negatives is that the Master of Letters is not offered by all universities and will not be recognized much outside.

Fees

  • My tuition fees for one year of study was ?27250, and I had to pay an additional ?6000 for accommodation in Dundee
  • You can pay all-together or split up your payments into a maximum of 12 installments. I did 3 installments. Rent was to be paid either monthly or all at once.
  • I was cooking by myself so I easily had around ?400 as monthly expenses.
  • As I was under 22 traveling in Scotland is free on buses so I did not have to incur traveling costs. All expenses was for eating out, cooking and other living and shopping purposes. Laundry had to be paid for too.

Course curriculum was really good, everything was covered from beginner level to making us understand what the industry expects out of us. and yes we were given a taste of what real world projects will look like by making us work with an external client on a project that ran for the whole semester.

It is intense, but if you are regular with your academics, get in touch with the professors to clear doubts, and take all the help you can get, you should be fine. Curriculum is not outdated and requires you to be aware of current affairs to be able to relate better

I got accepted for my dream course, St. Andrews offers a campus life, instead of city life, it is a stunning town with travel places around, very diverse, closer to home, a lot of extra curricular opportunities
