Tips and Tricks for Indian Students Applying to Glasgow MSc Data Science
The program is competitive (acceptance rate ~30–40% for internationals), but Indian computing grads from top institutions shine. With strong demand for data skills in India/UK, here's how to stand out:
- Strengthen Your Computing Profile: Ensure 50%+ modules match (e.g., Python, ML from your BSc/BTech). If short, take online certs like Google Data Analytics or Coursera ML (Andrew Ng)—mention in personal statement to bridge gaps.
- Personal Statement Mastery: 500–1,000 words: 50% on computing projects (e.g., Kaggle datasets, GitHub repos), 30% why data science/Glasgow (cite The Data Lab ties to Indian AI growth), 20% career goals (e.g., data scientist at Flipkart). Use Indian examples like Aadhaar analytics.
- Scholarship Blitz: Auto-grab £5k World Changers by Round 1 (apply by 5 Nov 2025—today's date!). For Chevening, start essays now (focus on "data for social good in India"); Indians win ~50 yearly. Stack GREAT (£10k) with JN Tata loan—apply via British Council portal.
- Visa and Prep Essentials: Post-offer, apply for Student Visa (£490) with CAS; show funds via loan (SBI/HDFC, up to ₹45 lakh at 9–10% interest). TB test (~₹7,000) at Delhi/Mumbai clinics. Book IELTS early if needed (aim 7.0 for buffer).
- Finances and Daily Life: Total £1,000–1,200/month in Glasgow (affordable vs. London). Use Gumtree/Rightmove for shared housing (£400–600); join Indian Society for masala chai meets and job shares. Part-time: 20 hrs/week (£10–12/hr in tech support via Handshake).
- Application Polish: Submit by 17 Dec 2025 to dodge "underrepresented" priority (India's popular, so early wins). Get reference from IIT/NIT prof highlighting projects. If rejected, consider MSc Computing Science as alternative.
- Career Launch: Use 2-year Graduate Visa for UK tech (e.g., data analyst at Barclays); return to India for roles at Accenture/Wipro (₹15–25 lakh start). Network via LinkedIn with Glasgow Data Science alumni.
FAQs
Ques 1. Can I apply with a non-CS background (like BCom, BBA, or BSc Maths)? Is coding experience required?
Answer: Yes — you can apply with any degree, but at least 50% of your credits must be in Computing modules (e.g., programming, databases, algorithms). If your degree is BSc Maths, BCom with IT, or BBA with data analytics, you’re eligible only if you have strong coding experience (Python, R, SQL) via:
- Online courses (Coursera, edX, Google Data Analytics).
- Internships (data analyst, BI roles).
- Personal projects (GitHub, Kaggle).
No formal coding in college? Take free MOOCs and build 2–3 projects (e.g., sentiment analysis, sales forecasting). Mention them in your personal statement — many Indians get in this way.
Ques 2. What’s the starting salary after MSc Data Science? Is it worth the ₹40 lakh cost?
Answer: Yes — excellent ROI. Average salaries:
- UK: £40,000–£60,000 (~₹47–70 lakh) as Data Analyst/Scientist (Barclays, Deloitte, Amazon).
- India: ₹15–35 lakh (TCS, Infosys, Flipkart, Paytm) — 2x–3x jump from pre-MSc ₹6–10 lakh.
Break-even: 1.5–2 years in the UK or 2–3 years in India.
Bonus: Use the 2-year UK Graduate Visa to work full-time — many earn £50k+ and repay loans fast.
95% employed within 6 months — Glasgow’s Data Lab network connects you to 100+ Scottish tech firms.
Ques 3. Are there full scholarships for Indian students in MSc Data Science?
Answer: Full funding is rare but possible — especially via external awards. Best options:
- Chevening Scholarship: Full tuition + ₹20 lakh stipend + airfare — top choice. Apply by 5 November 2025 (today!). Focus essay on "AI for India’s Digital Economy" (e.g., UPI, smart cities). ~50 Indians win yearly.
- Commonwealth Shared Scholarship: Full tuition + living (£1,347/month) — deadline 9 December 2025. For middle-income Indians; high success in STEM.
- World Changers Scholarship: £5,000 auto-award — almost all eligible Indians get it (no extra form).
Pro Tip: Apply in Round 1 (by 5 Nov 2025) — 80% of scholarships go early. Pair Chevening + HDFC Credila loan (₹40 lakh @ 9.5%) for zero out-of-pocket.

- - The competitive environment amongst the students, which makes any serious student motivated to study for longer period with a clear purpose in mind.
- - The beautiful historic walls of the 573-year old university.
- - The scenic landscape of gardens spread across the campus. It's preferable to carry a camera, or a good quality phone as there would be many captivating moments to capture while strolling across the campus
Dislikes
- - There are limited University accommodation facilities which are nearby to the university, as most of the available accommodation services are way far from the campus and require a transport to travel. So, it's better to book earlier in advance.
- - The weather can be depressing at times, with sudden rains and cold breeze.
- - During the months of November to January, there may be much less exposure of sunlight, with sun setting at around 3:30-4 pm itself. Due to which, I developed depressive thoughts during the initial days of stay, and had to eventually consult advice from the wellbeing team of the university, which later helped out significantly.
- I had applied for my accommodation through the university portal.
- The monthly rent of my accommodation is around £700, and the facilities include 24/7 water and electricity supply, Unlimited WIFI, ensuite bedrooms, common space for playing video games and a pool table.
- The challenges that I encountered while securing accommodation were the lack of multiple choices, as I was pretty late for the university accommodation application process.
- Yes, based on the quality and environment of the Blackfriars accommodation, I would definitely like to recommend my overview for future students seeking accommodation in Glasgow.
- My accommodation is around 3 km from the college campus, which is one of the major flaws for me. While most of the Indian students stay in my accommodation as it is nearby to the city centre.
