What Students Say
Likes
- The University has state of the art facilities to learn, experiment and create.
- It has good cafes within the campus to have good food and even work there. It has a wonderful gym to workout.
- The sheer diversity of the students was mesmerizing to me. We could interact and learn from people of different nationalities.
Dislikes
- We could have had a better experience if they had built a proper community where events were planned and executed. (Without charging lots of money for tickets)
- We could have benefited if the University had tie ups with Local businesses to help us find part time jobs, or even if they wrote a letter of reference.
- We could have had proper training before we applied for Jobs or before placements started.
Course Curriculum
- It was a mix of Both, but it was mostly Self Taught. The Theoretical Part was only when the Lecturers taught us the Concepts and showed us some Presentations. Most of our learning happened while we wrote our Assignments, as we had to Learn everything from Scratch and complete those projects on time. It was kind of difficult to manage studies while handling other things, to be honest.
- Positive would be the Diverse Students of the Classroom engaging and interacting with each other, discussing new concepts.
- Negative is It completely depends on how interested you are in getting the most out of the Course. If you're not interested, nobody will even ask or care. You may fail just as easily.
- When it was seminars, we were 25-50 students, but when it was lectures where common subjects were taught, it was somewhere around 300 - 500 students.
- If there were 500 students in Class 150 of them were Indians
Admission Experience
- I only applied to Northumbria University and I got Admitted in the First Try. I took help of a consultancy to do the whole admission process.
- NONE, as I did not try applying any other colleges or universities
- No, I did not apply to any other colleges
- I did not apply to any other Universities as I wanted to only join Northumbria University because I had friends living there.
- I joined Northumbria because of Two reasons: the first is it's Global Ranking and State of the Art Facilities, and the second is because I had many friends who had already been admitted into the same University.
- I applied to the University on it's Admission Portal, and wrote an SOP to the official mail. I submitted my documents for verification and they got back to me through mail. I soon received mail that I got shortlisted and they scheduled a call with me. In the call, I spoke about myself, stated my purpose and excitement to join the college.
- I applied for a September intake and my decision was influenced by several factors. Mostly because this intake helped me with enough time to arrange my Finances, plan my accommodation, and talk to several people who already live there.
- Also, because the University had a very good reputation, the Location was very vibrant and very alive.
- Admission process:
- Here is the timeline:
- # Early August I submitted my SOP, CV, and reference letters.
- # Mid-August: Received an Offer Letter from the University
- # Late August Paid my Deposit Fees and arranged my Education Loan and submitted all the necessary documents.
- # Very soon after that I received my CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)
- # Visa and Application Approval happened Early September and I received the Visa in 5 days as I paid for Priority Visa Service.
- # By 23 September I was in the UK and got admitted into the University the same week.
- Here is the timeline:
Faculty
- Faculty ratio was not that Ideal to be Honest. As we hardly saw any Lecturers or Professors throughout our Course. But When it came to Assignments or Teaching, they were handled well and we had no problem.
- The Teaching Methodology was effective but like I mentioned before, it completely depends on your Interest and Commitment, if you are committed to getting the best out of your course, the Resources the University provides are more than enough to Secure a Job.
- There are staff specifically allotted for this Purpose but I never really benefitted from it or knew people who got Placements because of them. Coming to Part Time Jobs, no Guidance or Help was provided by the Students.
- I had an Issue with an Assignment, the Portal evaluated my assignment and said it is Plagiarised, but I never knew how to reference well because this was my First time.
- I had a Meeting where they would decide if it was an Ethical Misconduct or Not, the Board members were so Patient and Understanding, I explained the whole thing and they understood and gave me Guidance. I really appreciate that they did not make Judgements right on a whim but gave time to explain my piece.
Campus Life
- We have 3 campuses
- 1. Newcastle Campus – School of Law and Business, containing Schools of Arts & Social Sciences, Built & Natural Environment, Computing, Engineering & Information Sciences, and Life Sciences, as well as the University Library, Students’ Union, and Sport Central.
- 2. London Campus – It offers Business, Computing, Cyber, Project Management, and Technology programme delivered in partnership with QA Higher Education.
- 3. Amsterdam Campus – Works with Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and offers both postgraduate and undergraduate courses for students.
- All the mentioned facilities are available in and around the campus.
- They conduct many cultural events where you need to buy a ticket and enter. I remember the Holi party, the Bollywood Event, and the New Year's Event where we made loads of Memories.
- Since it was Covid time, most of the extracurricular events were cancelled. We did go to play many sports and had cultural events but they were cut short most of the times.
Part Time Jobs
- It is very Rare. Maybe less than 10 students or so. It is very difficult to get that position.
- It pays as much as a normal Part Time Job, 10 GBP per Hour, but we can only work 20 Hours per week as a Student.
- We can work in cafes, gyms and help desks, but we need to apply in the portal and we will not be given much preference. We get around 10 - 13 GBP per hour. Very Difficult.
- Students find part-time jobs which are underpaying but still work because they can work for more hours. There are some places where you can work 40 hours per week but they only pay you 6 - 8 GBP per hour.
- *It is not easy to find these part-time jobs; we either need to have good references or roam around to find vacancies.
- Applying online will take lots of Time and often get rejected. * But We need to create a LinkedIn account, give all our details and start looking for Part Time postings and apply for them.
- We can even post our CV to Student unions where they might refer us to someone. We need to be on the lookout for hiring posters in and around University premises.
Placement
- A very small percentage of students achieve a Job right after they graduate. Most companies prefer the students to have exceptional credits and strong communication to select them for a Fresher position.
- They usually find them through personal connections they make while they do the degree and through internships.
- Our friends got placed in companies like the Post Office, Shell, etc.; they had very good internal connections. Their references set up interviews for them, where their skills were tested and they were given a temporary role, which turned into a permanent role later.
- Nike, IBM, Proctor & Gamble, BBC, NHS etc many big employers hire students from our programme.
Accommodation
- My Accommodation was Good. I lived in a Student Living program by NIDO. I lived in a Studio Flat on Stoddart Street. I booked it in early September, as I knew I had to show some kind of Address Proof of Where I'll be living.
- They charged around 600 GBP every month. It was a monthly deduction for 48 weeks of my stay there. It included my Studio Flat, Electricity, Water, Gym and Free pass to some Events which happened regularly.
- It is difficult to find trustworthy people to share your apartment with, so I booked a Studio for just myself and then proceeded to shift to a Sharing room after my 48 weeks in the NIDO community.
- Join in Facebook Groups of the University and try to get into Student Groups where you can post your Needs saying I need a Roommates to live with, 'I need to know more about something,' etc.
- Once you find the right info or roommates you can discuss and shift with them.
- It is less than 200 metres from my place.
Exams
- I only wrote the IELTS exam and scored a 7.0 which was more than enough, as the University would allow students with a 6.0 band and above.
- Documents list - Statement of Purpose (SOP), Curriculum Vitae (CV), Letters of Reference (LOR), Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), Academic Transcripts (Degree Certificates, Migration Certificate, Conduct Certificate), IELTS or Language Proficiency Test Results, Passport Copy, Visa Documents and Passport-Size Photographs.
- No Formal Interview was conducted. Just a casual call was scheduled where I spoke about my interests, passion, and reason to join. It did not influence my admission at all, as this call happened after I received my CAS.
Fees
- My Annual Tuition Fee was around 19000 GBP and I had received a Global Student scholarship of 3000 GBP which reduced my tuition fees to 16000 GBP
- Accommodation cost was around 450 - 600 GBP
- Personal Expenses like Memberships and Club fees cost me around 100 GBP every month
- The students are charged yearly, but students have the option to pay in various instalments. I first paid the deposit, which confirms my admission and then paid the whole fees at once with the help of an Education Loan.
- These costs are on a monthly basis
- Rent (Other Bills like Power and Water included): - If you're living alone: 450 - 600 GBP
- But if you're sharing: 300 - 450 GBP
- Food and Groceries: 200 GBP
- Transport: 50 - 60 GBP
- Personal Expenses like Shopping and Leisure : 100 GBP
Scholarship
- Yes, I have received a Global Student Scholarship, which you would receive if you are coming from a Non EU Country. All students from Non EU countries are automatically eligible for this.
- It was 3000 GBP, which was a substantial amount.
- Yes, all my colleagues and friends from Non EU countries have received this wonderful scholarship.
- I am not sure about The Typical amount or The average of students who receive this scholarship, as this is a Non Merit Based Scholarship and the University offers it to all students from Non EU countries.
