Course Curriculum

10

  • LLM at UCL is quite intensive and requires a lot of reading. The faculty is very cooperative and provides us with a lot of reading materials. Self-study is very important to score good marks and even passing marks. My course is solely theoretical because it is law.
  • There are only positive points about the course for instance: the reading material is provided to us, we get assignments to complete and the faculty provides us the feedback. Group learning is also one of the options, and we can make the appointments with the teachers if we need any help.
  • There are only two classes every week and timings are different. My timing is 11-3 on Tuesday and 2-4 on Thursday. We also have one optional course on academic legal writing on Friday.
  • Around 20 Indians are enrolled in my course.

Admission Experience

  • I applied to only three universities
    • 1 Queen Mary
    • 2 UCL
    • 3 LSE
  • Queen Mary and UCL I received the offer letter into but got rejected LSE.
  • I am assuming the reason behind my rejection was no work experience after my graduation. LSE requires work experience and in my case I was applying soon after graduation.
  • Queen was always my third option; that’s why I chose UCL.
  • I always wanted to go to the university, which had an amazing world ranking and is renowned all over the world. The QS ranking of UCL is 9th and the law ranking is 12th.
  • UCL is an exceptionally good university for law and many famous figures like Mahatma Gandhi studied there. For me, the criteria was a world-class university with a top-notch ranking.
  • The admissions process was quite intensive.
  • I submitted:
    • 1 SOP
    • 2 Academic letters of recommendations (two)
    • 3 Written Essays
    • 4 IELTS with a band of 7 in each section and overall 7.5
  • It was a very challenging process because I did not take help from any external source and the visa process is very complicated as well.
  • I applied for the September 2024 intake. I wanted to start my masters soon after my graduation, as I was already studying in India and did not want to disturb my flow. Apart from that, I want to work with international firms and international exposure was the best option to land a secure job.
  • I started planning everything in July 2023 and applied at UCL in December; I received my offer letter in April. Basically, 10-12 months it takes, including receiving the offer letter and visa appointment.

Faculty

10

  • Faculty ratio is quite different and varies; in my class 1, faculty and around 40 students are present.
  • The teaching method is quite simple; they frame things in ways we can understand and also conduct extra classes for us to revise the topics. They provide us ppt’s and in class we jot down every important point.
  • Yes, every faculty member assists us a lot and we also have student mentors and career counsellors helping us with job opportunities.
  • I like Mr. Alex Mills the most; he’s the sweetest person I’ve ever met.

Campus Life

10

  • There are three campuses; the main campus is in central London near Euston Square Station and the other two are newly constructed in Zone 2. One in Stratford and another one in Canary Wharf.
  • There are a lot of facilities, such as dancing, singing, games, skiing, games, and a makeup learning club.
  • The main event is the Christmas fair and I’m still discovering.
  • The list of all the clubs is mentioned on the student union website.

Part Time Jobs

  • There are part-time opportunities available outside and inside the campus as well. I’ve only applied to outside campus opportunities.
  • The pay range starts at 11 pounds per hour and depends on the work; at maximum, we can only work for 20 hours as mentioned on our visa.
  • It is easy to get jobs as a lot of sites are available, such as Stints and JobsToday.
  • This answer is very subjective, as some work as delivery partners and some work in factories but females usually prefer retail jobs, which are safe and secure. For example, nursing jobs are very famous among females, and bartender roles are also popular among teenagers. The process of applying is simple: make your CV approachable and as per the needs of the recruiters and always make the different CV for part-time roles. All the jobs are available online and some you can find by searching offline by enquiring.

Placement

10

  • The percentage of students getting jobs is very low and I’m not aware of the exact percentage as well.
  • Mostly students want to go back to their home countries and some want to work but not in the UK. The average salary range starts at 25000 pounds annually.
  • The process of finding jobs is not very complicated but requires a lot of patience. Apply to all the sites, subscribe, keep applying on LinkedIn, and start applying early. For example, 6-7 prior to the last date of your course.
  • Give interviews at least one or two days per week.
  • Major companies are
    • UK government site
    • Indeed
    • Total Jobs

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • I opted for student accommodation through my university portal. It was not very challenging for me as I applied in university portal and got my accommodation.
  • The monthly rent is around 13000 pounds.
  • My accommodation is very safe and it takes around 30 minutes to reach my accommodation. Most of the Indians stay in wembley but it depends on the location of the accommodation and most of the students opt for private housing as it is cheaper than student accommodation.

Exams

  • UCL accepts both TOEFL and IELTS.
  • I gave IELTS and is also aware of the IELTS score.
  • 7 in each module with no less than 7.5 overall is required to get into UCL Masters in Laws.
  • They don’t accept scores below 7 and overall 7.5 and are very serious about this criteria.
  • Some students were asked to give interviews and it was also mentioned in the application but I was only asked to submit written work.

Fees

  • The fees are 34,400 pounds paid in each semester, which means we are required to pay fees in three instalments.
  • The first 2000 pounds are paid to secure the admission.
  • After admission, the first installment is paid in October beginning or September end.
  • The second installment is paid in February.
  • The third in April-May.
  • The estimate of monthly expenses is around 1000 pounds, which includes living and food expenses.
  • The total is around 60 lakhs, including everything.

Scholarship

  • I did not receive any scholarships, and I’m not aware about the scholarships because I was accepted late and all the scholarship deadlines passed.
  • But there are options of scholarship on the portal, some provided by UCL and some by external sources, such as the Common Wealth Scholarship, which is very famous and tough to get.
