Indian students shortlisting universities for CS, Engineering, or MBA now have a fresh, authoritative benchmark: QS released its 2026 Subject Rankings today, March 25, covering 55 disciplines across 850+ institutions. Over 3.5 lakh Indian students enrolled in STEM and management programmes abroad in 2025 — and for this cohort, subject-specific rankings carry more weight than overall university tables when choosing where to apply.
Here is what the 2026 data shows for the three subjects that dominate Indian student applications.

CS Rankings 2026: MIT Leads, Singapore Rises
MIT holds the #1 spot in Computer Science & Information Systems for 2026, followed by Stanford (#2) and Carnegie Mellon (#3) — the same top-three order as 2025. The more notable shift is in Asia: the National University of Singapore (NUS) has climbed to joint #4 alongside Oxford, making it the highest-ranked non-US/UK university for CS. NTU Singapore holds #9.
For Indian students, this matters for two reasons. First, Singapore offers a post-study work pathway with no annual cap — a meaningful advantage over the US OPT/H-1B lottery system. Second, NUS and NTU tuition for international students runs approximately SGD 17,000–22,000 per year (roughly ₹10.5–13.5 lakh), significantly lower than US equivalents at USD 55,000–65,000 (₹46–54 lakh).

Engineering Rankings 2026: UK and Europe Hold Strong
In Engineering & Technology, MIT again leads globally (score: 95.9), with Stanford (#2) and ETH Zurich (#3) rounding out the top three. Oxford (#4) and Cambridge (#5) make the UK the strongest non-US destination for engineering at the top end.
For Indian students targeting the UK, engineering roles qualify for the Skilled Worker visa, which has no annual cap — relevant context given the two-year post-study work visa limit. Imperial College London (#7) and UCL (=24) are both in the top 25 and among the most popular UK destinations for Indian engineering students.
Germany's Technical University of Munich (TUM) enters at #16 — worth noting for cost-conscious applicants, as TUM charges no tuition fees for international students at undergraduate level.

MBA Rankings 2026
The Business & Management Studies ranking holds the most India-specific news: IIM Ahmedabad has entered the global top 25, ranked #21 — up from outside the top 25 in 2025. It is the only Indian institution in the top 25 for any of the three subjects covered here.
For students weighing a domestic MBA against studying abroad, this is a meaningful data point. IIM-A's global ranking now sits above several well-known international schools.
Among international options, Harvard (#1), Stanford (#2), and MIT (#3) lead the global table. INSEAD (#4) is the top European school and a strong option for Indian students seeking a one-year MBA format. London Business School (#9) remains the top UK option.

What Indian Students Should Do Now?
The QS 2026 Subject Rankings dropped today. If you are building your Fall 2026 or Fall 2027 shortlist, here is how to use this data:
- CS applicants: NUS and NTU Singapore's top-10 positions make them strong alternatives to US schools — especially if you are weighing OPT/H-1B uncertainty against a more predictable post-study work pathway.
- Engineering applicants: UK universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial) dominate the top 10 alongside US schools. TUM Germany at #16 is worth considering if cost is a constraint.
- MBA applicants: IIM Ahmedabad's #21 global ranking is now a credible benchmark when comparing domestic vs. abroad ROI. For international MBAs, INSEAD's one-year format and LBS's London location remain strong draws.
- Use subject rankings, not just overall rankings. A university ranked #50 overall may rank #12 in your specific subject — and that is the number that matters for your programme.
QS releases subject rankings annually, and the 2026 edition covers 55 subjects across 850+ institutions — the broadest edition to date. For Indian students, rankings are one input in a multi-factor decision that includes visa pathways, post-study work rights, tuition costs, and scholarship availability. Subject-specific data from QS is among the most widely used signals by Indian applicants and families when comparing destinations.
