Belarus is emerging as a popular destination for MBBS abroad; it offers a 6-year Doctor of Medicine program (considered equivalent to MBBS) in English. The Belarus MD degree is not equivalent to a postgraduate MD specialization in India; it is an undergraduate medical qualification similar to MBBS.
The annual tuition fees for English-medium programs range between USD 4,620-5,850 (INR 4.39-5.56 lakh per year), making it one of the more affordable options for Indian students. There is no entrance exam to get admission for MBBS in Belarus; it's directly based on academic records.

Some of the popular universities for MBBS in Belarus are Belarusian State Medical University, Vitebsk State Medical University, and Gomel State Medical University. The FMGE pass rate for Belarus-returned graduates is 21.67%. From the 4th year onwards, MBBS students begin clinical rotations in hospitals, where they have direct interaction with patients, so students are usually required to learn the local language (Russian or Belarusian).

Career Options After MBBS in Belarus

After graduating from a Belarus medical university, you must clear the medical licensing exam FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) or *NExT (when it is implemented). After that, you need to complete a 12-month CRMI (Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship) at an NMC-recognised Indian hospital.

If students are planning to practise medicine in the USA, they can apply for the USMLE or the UK by clearing the PLAB exam.

Note: Indian students pursuing MBBS abroad are required to complete two separate internships to become eligible for medical practice in India. One year of foreign internship and one year of CRMI (internship in India).

The table below list the FMGE pass rates for MBBS in the Following countries.

Country FMGE Pass Rate (2024 Annual)
Georgia 35.65%
Russia 29.54%
Bangladesh 26.79%
Philippines ~24%
Kazakhstan 18.50%

The primary reason for lower FMGE outcomes from Belarus is the clinical language gap. Theory is taught in English. But from Year 4 onwards, patient interaction, ward rounds and clinical demonstrations happen in Russian or Belarusian. Students who do not develop functional Russian language skills by Year 3 find clinical learning significantly limited, and this directly impacts FMGE performance.

*The NExT exam (National Exit Test) will soon replace FMGE for all medical graduates, including foreign ones. (As of May 2026, NExT has not been implemented for foreign graduates). FMGE remains the applicable exam.

Is MBBS in Belarus Worth It for Indian Students?

Belarus is a viable option for a specific type of student. It is not the right choice for everyone.

  • Belarus works well if: You have a NEET qualifying score, your family budget is INR 40–55 lakh for the full 6 years, you are willing to invest seriously in Russian language learning from Year 1, and you are committed to starting FMGE preparation from Year 3, not after returning to India.
  • Belarus is not the right choice if: You want the highest possible FMGE pass probability (Georgia at 35.65% is a better option), you are not prepared for a cold climate and a Russian-language clinical environment, or you are comparing it to a government MBBS seat in India
