What Students Say
Likes
- There is feeling of independence. Faculties are not like school teachers who will be always pestering whereas they give a kind of "if you study good for you , don't think we'll spoon feed you" vibe , which I find very appealing.
- Since it's a dental college and not medical College the place is always less crowded. In initial days when I joined the college I was not happy with it but sooner or later I found so many advantages for the same.
Dislikes
- The college is very hesitant to conduct any kind of cultural or sports programs. The management sees the not academic activities as a unwanted burden. So students always has to go begging behind the management for the approval.
- Since students and the patients use the same washrooms it will always be dirty. Toilets are not well maintained. I never uses college toilet , will always go to my room and use my own washroom. It's high time they should provide separate toilets
Course Curriculum Overview
The specific aspects of the curriculum that mainly influenced my decision to choose this course are the equal ratio of theoretical as well as practical training, and we get early clinical exposure when compared with other medical degrees. Through clinical rotations in various departments, students gain experience in diagnosing, scaling procedures, extractions, and restorations. But advanced procedures like lasers, implants, clear aligners, etc are out of the reach of the students. Another good thing is the enhancement of soft skills like communication, patient management, and ethical practise, these are very important for maintaining patient trust. Areas of improvement are management should incorporate more advanced digital dentistry tools and technologies in the curriculum. This could prepare the students for constantly evolving dentistry. The college conducts 3 internal theoretical as well as practical exams before the main University exam.
Internships Opportunities
Since this is a dental college and hospital internship is done in the college itself after one passes in the final year University exam. Duration of the internship is 1 year. Faculties will be their for close observation to improve our skills and guide us through each procedures. We do not get paid during internship.
Fees and Financial Aid
I am not quite sure about the tution fee increase policy. I am right now in my Final year and since my first year, the college fee has not been increased for me as well as my juniors. I am a Keralite who is studying in Karnataka. So I may not be eligible for any of the state scholarships but I have seen my batchmates who belong to Karnataka applying for a wide range of scholarships and getting approved too. Some of them are the Karnataka minority scholarship, Karnataka post matric scholarship (PMS), Defence scholarship scheme Vidya Siri scholarship, etc. There is no stipend in the college. But an internship without payment is compulsary for 1 year. During the internship, we have to do all the jobs ie taking a proper case history and diagnosing with proper radiograph in our department, extraction in the surgery department, restorations and rct in the conservative department assisting the postgraduates in prostho , scaling and Splinting in periodontic department all the procedure in pedodontics department
Campus Life
In the year, we only have 3 programs- Freshers day, College week, and Graduation ceremony. Freshers day is usually done when the new junior batch comes. It's quite fun for seniors. College week is a 1-week program where both sports and cultural are held. It is the most happening occasion taking place in the college. It is usually conducted in the month of June or July. This is held and conducted by the internship batch of that year. Then comes the graduation ceremony which is usually held in the month of August after the University exam of the final years. It is held and conducted by the Final years. There is a huge library in the college which is well-maintained. Students love reading books and spending time in the calm atmosphere of the library. In the classroom, we have the AV for PPTs blackboards with good chairs and benches for students. Only during college week sports and extracurricular activities are encouraged. There I ano student-run groups or portals, etc.
Admission
First of all, we should qualify for the NEET exam. Every year the qualifying mark will be different so the first criterion is to qualify for the NEET. The application form, fee structure, and dates will be correctly updated on the official Karnataka collegiate site ie dce.karnataka.gov.in There are so many benefits for the Reserved caste. Details regarding these will provided on the official website. Every year NEET exam will be held once nearly in June or August. It is a competitive exam so even if you secure a qualifying good mark and your fellow component scores more, he /she has a higher chance to get a merit seat in the college. Another con is, that it is an MCQ exam. MCQ might be confusing for some but for me, it was better than long-paragraph answers. Areas for improvement are there are so many educational agencies right now that are very big scams. They take too much money from their parents and pay half of it into college and the other half they take it for themselves.
Faculty
One of the significant strengths of the college is its favorable faculty-to-student ratio. With a relatively low ratio, the management ensures that each student receives adequate attention and personalized instructions. It also facilitates more interactive sessions. Dentistry requires extensive practical training, and with fewer students per faculty member, each student gets more opportunities to practice. Most faculty members hold MDS and other fellowships. Most of them also have their clinics. Teaching I would say okay, because most of the teachers make up PPT presentations and explain it but I prefer the conventional ways where the faculty explains with writing and drawing so I think it's upto the student to find it helpful. There is nothing like "out of the box" teaching. During clinical rotations students work closely with faculty members, these provide a platform for continuous interaction. Other than that we can approach the faculties during any time of the day.
