NIT Rourkela provides excellent hostel facilities for both girls and boys. Let us have a brief look at the facilities
Rooms and Accommodation - They have 10 hostels for college students. It is divided into two for both girls and boys. They do not have special facilities for postgraduate students. The rooms are spacious and need to be shared with two or three batchmates.
Other Activities – Students can enjoy their leisure time by playing outdoor and indoor games. They encourage sports like basketball, badminton, etc. The central part of the attraction is the music room, which pleases the musicians. The gym facilities are also available inside the hostel.
Food and Maintenance – They provide decent mess food, which includes non-vegetarian food, for six days a week. They Ensure cleanliness on both campus and in the hostel and laundry services are also available here
The answer to this depends upon your purpose of getting into NIT Rourkela. If exposure is the reason, you will get plenty at NIT R. But you will have to be proactive all the time. However, exposure is surely not your first priority.
Good placements are usually the prime reason for students to seek admission into top IITs and NITs. To be honest, the Food Processing Department at NIT Rourkela is not well established. Your food processing department tag will limit your placement options, even at an institute like NIT Rourkela. You will be eligible to sit for the placements of a handful of companies like TCS, INFY, IBM, WIPRO, etc. Hardly any food processing companies visit the campus for placements. But with the right skill set and an NIT Rourkela tag, you may end up with a good off-campus offer. However, you will most probably end up in Analytics, Big Data, or IT.
If you are confident enough, have a passionate interest in other branches like CSE, Electrical or ECE and know your calling, I would recommend you to take a drop. Whichever option you choose, remember that if you are skilled in your field, you will get placed in a good company, sooner or later.
Without any second thoughts, CSE at MNIT Jaipur seems to be a far better option than CSE at NIT Rourkela. Although many rankings claim otherwise, it's a well-known fact that these rankings are forged and shouldn't be the determining factor.
Although individual opinions may vary, I consider CSE at MNIT Jaipur a more appropriate choice than NIT Rourkela.
My brother did his B.Tech in Mining Engineering from NIT Rourkela. Here is a list of companies that recruit NIT Rourkela students from this branch-
Also, a certain amount gets deducted from your salary every month because of a 5 year bond. You will get the money after completing 5 years with the firm.
Another firm that recruits Mining students from NIT Rourkela is Lafarge. Overall, the placements for Mining at NIT Rourkela are quite decent.
Integrated MSc Physics at NIT Rourkela is good enough, but make sure that you don’t select this institute if you have better options in hand. The main attraction of this institute is the course structure that allows time to excel in other essential courses like Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Quantum Mechanics, and Statistical Mechanics. In addition, you can also study specialized electives like Advanced Quantum Mechanics, Advanced Condensed Matter Physics, Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos, Nonlinear Optics, Magnetism, Semiconductors, etc.
The faculty support and laboratory facilities are very poor. So, you need to rely on online classes from external sources to understand the concept properly. You also need to give more importance to self-study otherwise, you may end up futile here. If you have a passion for physics, then you can choose this college
It is not that NIT Rourkela placement cell does not allow Civil Engineering students to sit for CSE placements. The thing is that most software companies that visit the campuses with SDE roles do not allow other branches to sit for their placements. I assume by CSE placements you are referring to IT companies.
Certain top companies like Microsoft, Google, Goldman Sachs and Mathworks allow students from all the branches to sit for their placements. But for most software companies, branch is one of the criteria to filter out those students who can apply. Also, they mostly prefer students from CSE and circuital branches like EI, EC and EE.
The reason being that students from these branches work with codes more often and are well-versed in programming languages. The same is imperative for working in IT companies. However, it is also true that many students in other branches love to code and wish to work in these IT firms.
NIT Rourkela has no control over the criteria set by various IT companies and you will have to check the same before planning to sit for the placement of any IT firm.
NIT Rourkela is not the best NIT in the country but is one of the best. It enjoys good rankings and hence despite average on-campus placements, it has plentiful opportunities in off-campus placements.

Both NIT Rourkela and VSSUT are at the same level in terms of placements. BioTech students from NIT Rourkela and Electrical students from VSSUT get placed in software firms like TCS/IBM. Therefore, I recommend you look beyond placements and adopt a broader perspective. Identify where your interests and passions lie and approach that path rather than running after placements.
The field of Biotechnology is growing at a fast pace with cutting-edge research taking place. Many of NIT Rourkela Biotechnology alumni are today advancing into successful careers or research paths. Some examples are
The best part of Biotechnology at NIT Rourkela is the limited number of students which increases your chances of performing well in competitive exams like GATE increases.
Overall, being a part of a well-reputed institute like NIT Rourkela will offer great exposure both academically and personally. As an Electrical student at VSSUT, you will most probably be getting into a boring job at PSU. Moreover, Burla has a deteriorating infrastructure and poor campus facilities. So go for NIT Rourkela!
NIT Rourkela has ten hostels in total, of which two are for girls. They are CV Raman Hall of Residence (CVR) and Kiran Majumdar Shaw Hall of Residence (KMS). Let us look into both in detail
Food – CV Raman Hall is huge when compared with KMS. They can accommodate around 700-800 girls. The increase in students will largely affect the quality of the food. If you are from North India, it would be difficult to adapt to the food available here. But they make a variety of dishes every day, which helps you cope with the taste of the food.
Kiran Majumdar Shaw Hall of Residence (KMS) can accommodate only a small number of students. They provide more delicious food than CV Raman Hall.
Accommodation – In CVR, you have to share a room with one of your batchmates, and the rooms are very small.
KMS provides larger rooms than CVR. So it is better for you to opt for KMS for good food and accommodations.
