What facilities are provided in the 1st year hostels at NIT Calicut NITC? Do each student get a table and lockable cupboard?
My brother was a student at NIT Calicut so I have information on the boy's hostel only. The first-year students are allocated to 2 hostels namely Hostel A and Hostel PG-1.
Hostel A
- Triple Occupancy rooms.
- Each room has one table and cupboards with locks per person.
Hostel PG-1
- Very small rooms for 2 people.
- The room has a single table only with no specific cupboards.
Hostel A seems to have better facilities than PG-. So if you get the second one, be ready to compromise on many things with your roommate.
Common facilities in both hostels
Here are a few common amenities that can be found in both the boys' hostel
- A mess that serves food only to the first-year students. The food served here is average with more veg and less non-veg options.
- Well-maintained and clean bathrooms and toilets.
- The hostel rooms are lit adequately and have proper ventilation.
- There is a smooth electricity supply with rarely any issues.
- The hostel has no internet access.
Overall, the hostel facilities at NIT Calicut are like any other institute, average and tolerable.
What is better, NIT Warangal or NIT Calicut?

How is NIT Calicut for a B.Tech in material science?
B.Tech in material science in NIT CALICUT is a slightly underrated course as it is newly introduced. NIT Calicut also has an M.Tech course for material science.
The material science branch in NIT Calicut is a very promising branch despite being an underrated and newly introduced branch and has become an important part of NIT Calicut. This branch also has a dedicated department for nanotechnology. Recently they have made their college proud by preparing and distributing hand sanitizer in the entire campus and also in local sections of society to fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
The placements of this department are not as great as in the computer science department as it is a newly introduced branch.
This is a research-oriented branch with a strong alumni network. Material Science is definitely a promising field and offers a lot of opportunities in higher studies. If you love nanoscience then you should go for this course.
How does it feel to be a non-Malayali in NIT Calicut?
Even after studying for four years in this college, any student will ultimately miss the ground, hostels, teachers, fests, and most of all the friends. It might really hit hard thinking that the college days are over. In the end, it doesn’t actually matter whether you are Malayali or a non-Malayali in the college. You as a student should enjoy it completely.
There may be friends, who would crib so much about how awful the place is. But it didn’t feel so to many others. This may be because they get homesick and miss their homes and being far away from them. They should try being relished there. There are so many things to explore and learn.
Being far away there from the most secure place, makes the students realize how important their homes are to them.
You must not miss out on the fun. Ragam and Tathva are very organized in NIT Calicut. The nights are just amazing and to look forward to it. The nights are fun-filled with crowds and high-profile singers. There are various ‘on the spot’ events held.
There should not be any separation between the students but it is really tough because cultural, social, and lingual differences sometimes creep in. Despite these facts, everyone there is quite amicable to one another. There is not much of a problem as such. And it won’t even affect that much. The student should just get along well.
How are the hostels at NIT Calicut for freshers? What are some pictures of the hostel rooms?
NIT Calicut first-year students are allotted 2 hostels namely
- Hostel A: This room has 3 beds, cupboards, and tables. Although the rooms are triple occupancy, 4 students are made to stay together
- PG-1 : This hostel has double occupancy rooms only although the rooms are smaller in size than Hostel A.
In my opinion, it's better to get Hostel A because the rooms are spacious and it has better facilities than PG-1. From what I have heard, PG-1 mess has better food than Hostel A but that does not really matter because you can change your mess after a few months. The internet facilities are poor and this matter needs to be taken care of. The restrictions are imposed on first-year students but from the second year, students are free to do as their will. Trust me hostel life is much more than comfortable beds and mess food. It's about the friends you make and the memories you create!
Is civil engineering from NIT Calicut good?
NIT Calicut is good for Civil Engineering. The department has an experienced faculty base. The laboratories have the apparatus needed to perform exercises but the instruments are old and don’t work properly. But the lab sessions are very useful, you can learn a great deal by attending these, The Civil Engineering Association also provides good workshops often.
NIT Calicut placements are good for Civil Engineering. Around 75-80% of students get placed through the campus drive. The average CTC offered is around INR 8 LPA.
How is the mess food at NIT Calicut?
NIT Calicut has the best mess food with ten possible options, which include North Indian, South Indian, Vegetarian, Non-Vegetarian, etc. You can switch from one to another based on your interests. The hostel’s mess food is contracted to private businesses; hence, there is high competition between them to provide delicious food to the students.
So you won’t be disappointed with the food at NIT Calicut.
How good is the internet connection at NIT, Calicut? Are there any restrictions?
According to some of my friends studying at NIT Calicut, the internet service there is very good. But there are also some things you have to keep in mind about the internet usage, before getting admission in NIT Calicut.
- The first year students get no access to internet connection in the hostel.
- The students have to go to the Central Computing Center which is not far away from the hostel.
- It is a 5 min walk from the first year hostel.
- Students get internet connection from the second year.
- The students access internet connection in NIT Calicut through an extensive fiber optic network spread over the whole campus.
- A total of 21 kilometers of optic fiber cable backboned with 50 routed internal networks.
- The connection is through 200 Mbps leased line connection from Reliance and BSNL.
- Students get around 10 Mbps which is pretty decent speed and enough for the student to either watch something or play online games.
As for the restrictions, torrents are restricted through an Internet Firewall Company named Fortiguard which is an excellent Internet Firewall. Some students use tunneling to use NIT Calicut’s internal server named Athena which is much faster than the LAN connection. For login you need a username and password provided by a CSE student.

Based on the above table, you can get branches like Civil, Material Science, Production, Biotechnology, Chemical, Engineering Physics, and Mechanical Engineering with your rank in the first round. For better branches like EEE and ECE, you can go for the subsequent rounds.
Most top rankers go for IITs, BITS, and some other top NITs. So considering your decent rank, you will have a better chance to get admission to NIT Calicut. If you still have any second chances, prepare for JEE Advanced too because your Mains AIR is great and you might even get into an IIT.
How is the hostel allotted to the first year at NIT Calicut?
The first-year boys are allotted three or four shared rooms in both hostels A and B. The hostel for girls is allotted at LH blocks two and four. Usually, hostel rooms are fixed on the first day of admission based on the admission order.
