Is CUSAT in Kuttanad good for engineering?
To be honest, you will be very disappointed if you join CUSAT expecting to be taught by highly experienced professors and a top-notch infrastructure. If you are nevertheless joining CUSAT, bear in mind that you will have to resort to self-study most of the time.
- Academics: CUSAT is a big disappointment in terms of the quality of education offered. Most courses are taught by guest faculties who have no knowledge or interest in teaching.
- Infrastructure: The infrastructure again is in a poor state and no provisions are made for extracurriculars and sports. cricket etc. Don't expect a court for basketball either.
- Electricity supply: The institute has a poor electricity supply and there isn’t even a generator facility.
- Library: The library is under-stocked and most of the books you will need won’t be available. Moreover, it is so small that you will feel cramped here.
Considering all the above points, I don’t think it’s wise to join CUSAT in Kuttanad for Engineering.

- Faculty: The faculties in Civil Engineering are quite experienced and provide quality learning.
- Extracurricular Activities: A lot of exposure in extracurricular activities is provided by CUSAT, which is a major recreational mode and helps in cultural growth too.
- Curriculum: The syllabus followed by CUSAT is quite good and well-framed. It is considered to be tougher than other universities, but not very difficult to grasp if the genuine effort is provided.

CSE is the most sought out branch of CUSAT. Since you have 400 other candidates waiting ahead of you, your chances of getting CSE are very low. If you have applied for some other branches, you can wait for the results. Else, if CSE is your only choice, try some other good college. You can come for the spot round if getting into CUSAT is your dream.
Which college is better, CUSAT or BIT Sindri?
For core branches, BIT Sindri is better. BIT Sindri is good for CSE in many ways be it infrastructure, campus life, hostels, or education. Few colleges have separate departmental buildings but BIT has a separate building for all its branches.
The reasons for choosing BIT Sindri are as follows:
- Reputation: According to the NIRF report 2023, BIT Sindri is the fifth-best engineering school in Jharkhand. The college is connected with Vinoba Bhave University and has AICTE approval.
- Infrastructure: BIT, Sind has top-notch facilities including multimedia auditoriums, lecture rooms, fully furnished contemporary labs, and a campus-wide network. The institute houses 14 laboratories under the Unit of Excellence in addition to over 80 laboratories for other courses and disciplines. Students can stay in hostels.

- Campus Life: BIT Sindri has a well-respected library with a sufficient selection of literature from several subject areas and some competitive books for the GATE and CAT exams. Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has a central office, located in the Common Facility Centre. The central office is governed by a hostel advisory committee and issues hostel rules. It also helps students to get accommodation in the campus hostels. University’s office also takes care of new student’s hostel admission.

Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) also has a mess. It is run by a committee of students. The mess food is quite good and comes at a reasonable price.
How good are the placements for a B.Tech in safety and fire engineering at CUSAT?
I have a few friends at CUSAT, so I think I can give you an idea about the placement opportunities available for their Fire and Safety department.
Fire and Safety Engineering can be quite challenging. If you are serious about your studies and put in the required effort you will definitely have enough opportunities at the time of placements. But if you are not that serious about academics and end up having backlogs the faculty will not help you during placements.
If you are sincere you can get packages similar to the ones offered at reputed IITs and NITs. Here is a brief highlight of the recent placement statistics for the branch.

- Major recruiters - BPCL, IOCL, JSW, etc.
Also, it is worth mentioning that CUSAT is NBA Tier - 1 accredited. Other than CUSAT, only IITs and NITs have NBA accreditation. So, CUSAT is definitely a worthy choice for a B.Tech in Fire and Safety Engineering.
If anyone gets selected for civil engineering in CUSAT, does he get to study in SOE or the CUSAT main campus itself?
CUSAT is a university that had colleges under it in the past. Now it only has colleges or schools to be exact. Which are under the main university campus.
Following are the various schools affiliated with CUSAT University.
- SOE: It stands for School of Engineering and deals with UG engineering courses.
- Old SOE: It deals with Grad and Ph.D. courses. It also comprises various departments for MCA.
- SLS: It stands for School of Legal Studies and deals with the law courses.
- SMS: It stands for School of Management Studies and deals with business-related courses.
- Kunjali Marakkar School of Marine Engineering: It deals with marine engineering courses.
The above-mentioned schools constitute the main campus. This is not the entire CUSAT, there is another campus for the university.
Lakeside Campus:
- The Lakeside campus is around 12 km from the main campus. It is set in Cochin city on the estuarine waterfront.
- It consists of the School of Ocean Science and Technology, School of Industrial Fisheries, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, Department of Chemical Oceanography, Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry, Department of Marine Geology and Geophysics, and Department of Physical Oceanography.
- The School of Marine Sciences has a library that is regarded as one of the largest marine science libraries in Asia and a research vessel for coastal water studies.
- The school has academic interactions with other universities and research institutes in India and abroad.
Apart from this, there is also CUCEK in Kuttanad, also known as the Pulincunnoo campus. So, if you get selected into civil engineering, then you will be studying in SOE which is inside the main campus.
What are the fees if I take an admission through the spot admission in CUSAT?
There is no difference between the fees for general round admission and the fees for spot admission. However, the fees for NRI spot admission are higher.
- At the time of admission, INR 55- 60 thousand is charged in a general round admission.
- For an NRI spot admission, you will be charged an amount of INR 2 Lakhs, out of which INR 1.25 Lakhs would be a security deposit.
- This means that this amount would be returned to you once you finish college.
Talking about the semester fee, there is again a slight difference between general round admission and NRI spot admission. It is INR 43 thousand for general round admission and INR 55 thousand for NRI spot admission.
Is CUSAT better than NITs for msc physics?
NITs are generally much better than Cochin Institute Of Science & Technology (CUSAT) as they receive higher funding, seminar, workshops, facilities and have reputed international Scientists. They include -
- Funding in the institution
The funding is straight from the government and therefore tends out to be more advanced in terms of technology and curriculum. All facilities are provided in order to make it a global course.
- International Collaborations
The NIT across the nation are actively engaged in seminars/workshops that allow its candidates to have a great exposure towards good & eminent scientists across the globe.
CUSAT can compete with NOT only on the grounds of the Physics department as it is the only department that fulfils the criterion of good faculty and advanced projects in a general sense. The major areas to look up to are :

CUSAT gives you good opportunities but when it comes to choice between CUSAT & NIT ; surely the latter will be more preferable.
When will CUSAT Kochi be converted into an IIEST? It will be a boon for CUSAT.
There are several rumors about CUSAT being an IIEST in the future, having theories both supporting and opposing the statement. But, it is expected that CUSAT will never be IIEST. Some reasons opposing the statement are listed below.
- There are several political forces involved in admission to the institute. If it becomes IIEST in the future, the admission procedure will entirely change, considered JEE Mains as the only form of admission for B.Tech students. So, local reservation criteria and other sorts would get neglected by this, and the level of competition would rise drastically.
- Kerala is a small state and three national-level institutes like IIT, NIT, and IIEST in such a small region is not expected to be established.
- The central government has proposed three colleges for becoming IIEST- Shibpur BESU, Anna University, and CUSAT. Out of the three, only Shibpur has accepted the proposal and is now IIEST. The rest two have put the request in their pending list. This makes it almost impossible to transform.
Considering the above factors, it can be concluded that CUSAT is not going to be an IIEST in the near future. The talk of its conversion has been going on for a long, especially during the time of admission and entrances, but it’s still unprocessed and unexpected.
