The first part of your question cannot necessarily be broken down. But, it can rather be said that you should prepare enough to secure a reasonable score in GATE to be shortlisted.
However, it is essential that you put valid points when participating in one. Because this will determine whether or not you are the best fit among others.
NITIE has a total of 5 courses both for the students attempting for CAT and GATE. The courses for CAT students include PGDIM and PGDISEM whereas for the GATE students include PGDIE, PGDPM, PGDMM.
The minimum eligibility for any student to be a part of the NITIE is to have a Bachelor of Engineering/Technology degree with at least 60% aggregate in any branch. For the SC/ST/PwD category, this aggregate of 60% goes down to 55%. There are a few seats that are reserved for the sponsored candidates.
NITIE was not established to compete with the IIMs. It was established with the aim of making Engineers into good managers who have decent technical and managerial skills required across industries.
But, since the PGDIM & PGDISEM programs of NITIE admit students through CAT, people do compare the college with IIMs. Still, in case you want to know where NITIE stands among reputed B-Schools of India, I will say it falls in cluster - 2.
Here are the various clusters of Indian B-Schools.
Despite being in a different cluster, the course structure, rigor, placements, industrial exposure, and batch quality of NITIE are on par with the old IIMs. NITIE also has a locational advantage. The alumni base of NITIE is huge and they regularly visit the campus for guest lectures, seminars, and placements.
So, IIMs and NITIE are different types of B-Schools and it’s not possible to give a conclusive comparison between them.
One of my friends appeared for the interview of the 2020-22 batch. The interview was online. The pattern was entirely new. The offline interview got canceled due to the Covid-19 situation. NITIE also cancelled the GD.
Online Interview:
They received a set of 6 questions, on which they needed to prepare a talk for five to seven minutes. The questions were regarding the following.
Apart from these 6 questions, there was a surprise question on current affairs. The time allotted for the surprise question was two minutes.
Platform:
The interview was a recorded session on the TALVIEW app/website. After you login with your credentials, the app promotes the first question. After 30 seconds the recording starts with a timer of 7 minutes. Once you submit your first answer, the second question comes on your screen and the answer is similarly recorded. They were given a time slot for recording the interview.
According to my friend they were judged based on their presentation skills, body language, confidence, and presentation. My friend's interview was quite good and he converted.

When it comes to operations, NITIE is unbeatable compared to SPJAIN for at least the next ten years, and the same is true for finance and marketing, as NITIE cannot beat SPJIMR for the next decade. Here are some reasons to consider:
Overall, NITIE is a much better option than SPJIMR for operations and as a college in general. While SPJIMR has excellent marketing strategies, factors such as GFT and Rural internships are just gimmicks to bring the college into the top 10. Additionally, SPJIMR began inflating their placement reports due to institutes like MDI doing the same. It's essential to check the data for yourself and not settle for others' beliefs, as everyone has their own. NITIE is relatively unknown due to being a government institute that cannot advertise like SPJIMR or MDI. Additionally, the operation is not as prestigious a stream as finance and marketing in the corporate world, giving NITIE a bad reputation. However, NITIE is the clear choice for operations, and you should do your research and make an informed decision.
The placement scenario of NITIE Mumbai is excellent and the packages offered to the students of PGDIE are very good. According to the final placement report of 2021 of NITIE Mumbai, the highest job offers were from Consulting and IT sector with 44% of students getting placed.
The highest CTC offered was 44 LPA with an average package of 20.85 LPA. The average package offered to the top 10% of students is around 37.38 LPA and for the top 20% of the batch is around 32.92 LPA.
These packages offered are generally higher than what is offered in other colleges and students get the opportunity to work in top companies in diverse job roles.
The college does not release cut-offs for the reserved categories. However, it can be predicted from the general cut-off.
The cut-off for the general category usually lies between 97 percentile- 98 percentile. So, the cut-off for OBC can be 90-92 percentile and for other categories, it can lie around 80.
Since you have not mentioned any particular course, here is the past trend for PGDIM and PGDISEM.
| Program | Category | Overall Cut-off | Sectional Cut-off |
| PGDIM | OBC | 87+ percentile | 75+ percentile |
| PGDIM | SC/ST | 70+ percentile | 56+ percentile |
| PGDISEM | OBC | 84+ percentile | 68+ percentile |
| PGDISEM | SC/ST | 55+ percentile | 49+ percentile |
Note that these vary every year depending on the number of applications received.
One of my friends has completed his PGDIE from NITIE and as a TA he has received 12400/- per month.
However, the stipend for 12400 is paid to the students to get themselves involved in the professors’ TAs work, but the students aren’t paid anything during summer internships.
Among these, NITIE Mumbai is the best institute for an MBA. It is considered the Mecca of Operations and SCM. The Ops and SCM job profiles offered at NITIE Mumbai placements are even better than the ones offered from these sectors at IIM ABCL. The final placement record for 2022 showed the average CTC is INR 24.51 LPA. Highest CTC offered this year was INR 49 LPA.
Locational benefits, a huge alumni base, and a stellar placement record are some of the other factors that work in favor of NITIE.
