Can an average non IITian make it into IIM Ahmedabad in the first attempt with three months preparation?

Students ideally need 6 months to prepare for IIM A, B, C. There’s a lot more to CAT than just completing the syllabus. Test mastery takes time. But if you are extraordinary in English and Maths, then you can complete your preparation in 3 months. But such cases are quite rare.

I have scored 88% in 10th, 87% in 12th and 74.1 in graduation. Can I get into IIM Ahmedabad or any other top B-Schools with this score?

If you want to ask whether your profile is good enough to get admission into IIM Ahmedabad, the answer is always yes. You’re eligible to sit for the CAT and are equally probable to get admission. Now I want to show you two kinds of profiles that you would have most likely encountered yourself; first is that of an A-grade student who has many awards and achievements under their belt and has scored exceptionally well in CAT. The second category has students with average past academic records and no substantial work experience. Although the commonplace category is that of an A-grade student it certainly gives you hope when you come across students who don’t have the conventional candidature and still made it into one of the best B-Schools in the country. In order to get into the institute you gotta understand its admission criteria. IIM Ahmedabad is usually very generous in terms of the cutoff threshold. This year the overall cutoff is 80 percentile for the open category but you need to have an exceptional profile in order to get a PI call on 80-99 percentile. If you dream of getting into IIM A, you cannot compromise on your CAT score as it accounts for 65% of the total weightage.

My 10 CGPA is 8.4 and the 12th mark is 86%. Should I prepare for the IIM Ahmedabad?

Yes, IIMs particularly IIM Ahmedabad demand good academic records. But, IIMs require more than academic performance. IIM admissions usually include:

  • Common Admission Test (CAT), is a nationwide management admission test, that must be taken. CAT scores will influence IIM admissions.
  • Academic Record: Your academic record matters in the selection process. Your bachelor's degree performance will be assessed alongside your 10th and 12th grades.
  • Job Experience: Although not required, many IIMs prefer candidates with job experience.
  • Personal Interview: IIM interviews shortlisted individuals to evaluate their communication skills, leadership potential, and other non-academic characteristics.

Thus, while your academic record is a plus, you must do well in the CAT and other selection processes to get into IIM Ahmedabad. It's also worth mentioning that thousands of applications compete for a few IIM places. It's worth preparing for the IIMs with the scores you have, just focus on the remaining parameters which are in your hand now.

How did you clear GD-PI of IIM Ahmedabad?

SC
Sumit Chaterjee Posted On : March 10th, 2022
lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

The GD-PI round will not be easy irrespective of whether it’s for IIM A or any other college. There are certain non-negotiables in every GD-PI. These non-negotiables usually depend on the objective of the program and the values of the college. If you fulfill these criteria, the GD-PI round will not be that difficult.

Here are some things that can help you perform well in the GD-PI round.

  • Dress appropriately for the interview.
  • Try to hit a conversation with the panel. You need to be smart enough to figure out the 3 best things in your CV, about which the other person will be interested in talking.
  • Present your answers in a short and concise manner. This will make an impact.
  • Try to ask well-thought-out questions during the interview. This will show that you are keen to join the institute.
  • Read your profile thoroughly. Many students fail to answer questions regarding their profile, due to the lack of preparation of their own profile.

The two most common questions asked during the GD-PI round are ‘Tell me something about yourself.’ and ‘Why MBA?”. So, prepare for these questions.

How much need-based scholarship does IIM Ahmedabad provide?

RC
Rahul Chandra Posted On : June 7th, 2023
MBA from IIM Ahmedabad

It depends on board permission and total tuition fees of the program. To avail IIM Ahmedabad scholarships check the following details:

IIMA Special Need-Based Scholarships: All students admitted to the post-graduate programs (PGP & PGP-FABM) whose gross annual family income was below Rs.15,00,000 during the previous financial year are eligible for this scholarship. It is subject to proof of family income, educational loan amount, and past earnings.

Family income includes parent(s)/guardian(s) and spouse if married. Consider pre-tax income. IIM Ahmedabad will decide each applicant's financial aid based on their economic condition, including movable and immovable family assets, the number of dependents on the family income, and any other factors it deems essential.

Other Scholarships:

  1. All SC/ST postgraduate students receive Rs.150 each month for 10 months.
  2. To encourage students to work in NGOs, two students from each batch will get financial aid for three years to help pay off their IIMA bank debts. Each student receives Rs.3–4 lakhs in help.

IIM Ahmedabad will not award the mentioned scholarships/financial aid to the students who violate the Institute's disciplinary rules.

Institute's Financial Aid and Awards Committee may set minimum grade points for scholarship eligibility. A student can get more than one scholarship in an academic year if the sponsors don't object and the total amount does not exceed the actual yearly expenses (PGP fees and other charges plus boarding and lodging).

I’m a B Tech CSE 2nd year student What should I do to bag a winter internship at IIM Ahmedabad?

PR
Parth Reddy Posted On : June 3rd, 2023
Studied at IIM Ahmedabad

Usually, IIMs have research internship programs. The preparation would depend on what field you want to work in. Ideally, to get an internship at IIM Ahmedabad or any other elite institute, you should start looking for professors and start applying.

Your CV shortlisting would mostly depend on how well-known your undergraduate institution is, what other experiences you’ve had etc. Start preparing with the trickiest part which is writing a Cover letter and always take help from your professors at college. Start sending out your CV and Cover letter to all the professors you wish to work with and you need to start this procedure 1-2 months before your winter breaks. The usual time to get a reply is a week and you’ll be briefed about the further process in the email.

Remember, it is likely that they assign you some clerical work like collecting articles related to their ongoing research or may send you to interact with NGOs to collect data. Although the experience will help in the future, If you want something more substantial like assisting professors and actually giving your input for their research work you might have to do the extra task and get a reference from your college.

PGPM Marketing and Business Strategy & Human Resource Management, Xavier School of Management (2019)

Both are among the top 10 B-schools in the country and each of them excels in certain areas. Picking out a simple winner among them is not really a great idea to identify their true potentials. But still, let us try to compare between the two on some aspects –

    • Best known programs – IIM Ahmedabad is known for its general management and marketing courses in particular. XLRI is best known for its human resource program and is considered to be the best program in the country.
    • Teaching methodology – IIM Ahmedabad is more practical and case study focused while XLRI follows more conceptual and theory-based teaching.
  • Job Roles - IIM Ahmedabad will build competencies around consulting strategy while XLRI is apt for management-related roles.
