No, you do not necessarily need an IT Background to apply in Supply Chain Management (SCM) at NITIE. In fact, your previous work profile is quite independent.
Students who have worked in the Manufacturing or Automobile sector may have a slight advantage over you. Otherwise, everyone is at the same level. Engineering branches like Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil also enjoy an advantage. Graduates from Electronics and CSE easily get through the Planning role.
Once admitted to NITIE, SCM will be taught to you in a very well manner and any company will offer you an SCM profile because of NITIE brand value.
You don’t compulsorily have to be from the IT sector for a planning profile in SCM during NITIE placements.
It all actually depends on your interest. As both of these options are completely different and two different areas of interest. You must choose what you find interesting. There would not be any conflict between these two institutes over the placement stats as both of them will give good placements to their students. Here are the recent placement highlights of the institutes.

If you are interested in tough work that is more challenging or research and development-oriented, you should choose IISc. As in the world of Nanoscience, IISc is the country’s most renowned institution. And if you are more inclined towards managerial work, then it would be better to go to NITIE.
The GATE score to get admission in NITIE is not a topic to disclose publicly but for an idea, a student from the general category got admission in the NITIE Mumbai.
He has attained an IE in the first round. The cut-off back then was around 760+.
Now a student with the above data can calculate his/her chances of getting admission to the Institute. It's better to set a target according to last year's cut-off and prepare accordingly.
I got to know from one of my friends that the schedule is quite normal and the students who complain about the hectic schedule are the ones who are themselves responsible for it. The schedule is hectic or not, it depends completely on you.
Besides this, the time schedule for the college is absolutely normal. It is always recommended to try and grab as many opportunities as you can and invest your spare time in as many productive activities as you can.
One of my friends qualified for the GATE examination and achieved the required cutoff for NITIE Mumbai and got a call for their interview. He got shortlisted for Group Discussion as well as Personal Interview.
The GATE cut-off usually differs every year. The cutoff is further divided by the category as tabulated below”
Category | GATE score |
General | 609 |
OBC | 473 |
SC | 345 |
ST | 317 |
PwD | 473 |
The Group discussion and Personal Interview are also the crucial stages of the final selection in NITIE.

Yes absolutely, people from CS & IT background do get placed in the supply chain department. My brother is a former student of NITIE and currently working as a Supply chain manager at Amazon.
As a matter of fact, if you look at the profiling of any batch, more than 60% of students are from IT background and most of the roles in NITIE are for supply chain management.
Moreover, companies are not distinct on this basis because not many students anyways have experience in the supply chain & secondly it's more based on knowledge you possess and how you present yourself on the day of the interview.
And most importantly, work experience is just one element of your overall profile. There are other elements like internships, Weekend projects, College grades, certifications completed and other achievements etc.
Students essentially opt for NITIE Mumbai since it provides better job prospects. The reasons can vary from one place to another. Here are things you should take into account before taking any decision:
This whole scenario has resulted in untimed deception for GATE aspirants.
