How would you rank the following business schools, ISB, IIM A, B, C, L, XLRI, FMS, and SPJIMR?

All the aforementioned colleges are among the best B Schools in India so the choice between them depends on your preference and future prospects. You need to determine what exactly you want from the program and where your career currently is.

In general, ISB is for people who have better industry experience, good leadership skills and decent academics. The other B Schools focus more on excellent academics throughout your career.

The ranking of these institutes in my opinion is ISB, IIM-A, B, C>IIM-L, FMS, XLRI,>SPJIMR

The above preference order is based on a number of factors like career progression, college market value perception, quality of faculty, quality of students, academic learning, quality of recruiters and infrastructure.

What should I choose between IIM Ahmedabad PGP-FABM and XLRI Jamshedpur HRM provided that I am an agricultural engineering student?

I assume that you have both options IIM Ahmedabad PGP-FABM and XLRI HRM. If that is the case, then you should make a well-informed decision based on your personal inclinations.

If you had taken Agricultural Engineering because you were genuinely interested in it, then IIM Ahmedabad, PGP-FABM is the best choice for you.

However, if you had to take Agricultural Engineering because that was the last option you had, then it makes no sense to continue with it. In that case, XLRI HRM is the best option for you. This is because the job opportunities after FABM, are scarce, and you. HRM will fetch you office jobs.

Brand-wise both institutes are similar with IIMA having the upper hand. Placements-wise, HRM is better unless you have an interest in Agricultural Engineering.

Is it worth to join in IIM Nagpur? How far it is comparable with old IIMs? How about ROI there

RC
Richa Choudhary Posted On : January 17th, 2023
MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Nagpur (2022)

Let’s compare IIM Nagpur with the older IIMs generally. IIM Nagpur lacks in the following aspects

  • Permanent Campus
  • Permanent faculty
  • Good number and standard of peers

But what’s amazing is that these shortcomings don’t bring down their worth even a bit. It has more merits than demerits. Some include

  • IIM Ahmedabad’s mentorship brings in the best faculties and helps maintain a learning environment.
  • Various industry interaction programs are held to inculcate management skills and live experiences
  • It enjoys a good location advantage as it attracts companies from around the country
  • The Foreign Exchange Program provides excellent exposure to the international corporate world
  • Lower fees compared to other IIMs
  • The hostel and infrastructure facility are at par with that of other IIMs.

Coming to the ROI, IIM Nagpur definitely excels at this one. This is because its fees are lower than other IIMs while the packages offered are almost similar. At the end of the day what matters is that despite being a new IIM it has grown leaps and bounds and it is expected to do more in the future.

I am a class 9 student. What preparations should I make to get into IIM Ahmedabad?

RG
Ranjeeta Ghosh Posted On : March 30th, 2021
Student at IIT Madras

Here are a few of the things that you should do to prepare.

High academic proficiency:

You have to score high marks in class 10th, class 12th, and graduation.

  • Class 10th marks need to be 90+ ideally. The same can be expected from class 12th marks. The cutoffs may vary for science, commerce, and arts students.
  • UG marks are another criterion for getting admission to IIMA. If you are an engineer, you got to score a CGPA of at least 8. Cutoffs may vary across various UG specializations.

Excellent CAT percentile:

  • IIM Ahmedabad is the best business school in the country. It is obviously expected that the CAT percentile for admission to this prestigious institute will be high as well.
  • A general Male engineer needs a 99.7+ with high academic grades to be shortlisted.
  • If your academic grades are a bit bad, they have to be compensated with a higher percentile. But if you have poor academic grades, even a 100 percentile cannot help you. You won’t be shortlisted.

A well-rounded profile:

  • Once you make it to IIMA, you will have to compete with the best brains of the country for the jobs as well as the internships.
  • You need to have a well-rounded and balanced profile. This means you need to have academic consistency and great extracurriculars.
  • If you have these, you stand a much higher chance to get a good internship or even a great job in the finals.

Apart from these, you need a lot of mental strength. IIMA is known to be exhausting and wearying right in the first year. You just need to work hard and always be at the top of your game. This is going to be the only way to survive, grow and do well in your academics there.

Is it worth joining the IIM Ahmedabad FABM programme after spending Rs. 21 lakhs?

DB
Debolina Bhattacharya Posted On : July 26th, 2021
Studied at Delhi University (2019)

IIM-A's PGP-FABM is a two-year full-time program that covers allied areas such as agriculture, food processing, commodities and rural development sector, and rural infrastructure. The fees for the batch 2021-2023 are 28 lakhs.

  • One of my friends studying at IIM Ahmedabad said that a certificate doesn’t mean you will get a good placement offer.
  • If you are taking a loan then be careful as your placement is not certain. Getting a collateral-free loan would be easy but paying it off will be a real task.
  • The most important thing here is your financial goals and if getting a certificate from the IIMA PGP-FABM program fits into it then go ahead.
  • As the fees for this program are too high, I’d say think about it and only go for it if you are highly interested in this field of study.

However, if you are still dicey about whether to opt for this program or not I would suggest you to invest in attending a course conducted by Pavan Bhattad’s Brainival. It is a 2-day workshop in which he discusses speed reading, mind mapping, memory techniques, and ideas generation which was initially conducted in Pune.

What books should I read for making an impression on the panelist of IIM Ahmedabad?

AJ
Arshit Jain Posted On : December 23rd, 2022
MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (Graduated 2020)

Read books to learn something new and interesting, not to make an impression during the interview. Something that can be added to your knowledge base. If you read to impress the panel, you'll be more concerned with completing the number of books than with gaining a deeper understanding of the context, which can defeat the purpose of reading entirely. Keep in mind that some people can read quickly and with great comprehension. It could be a lifelong hobby for them. Maintain your current pace.

In terms of books, there are some common genres that can be good conversation topics during interviews, such as history, politics, innovation, literature, and so on, but read what interests you. Even if you're reading simple books like Harry Potter, it's fine as long as you can answer some good questions about what you've learned from the characters, incidents, or the book as a whole. Do read about the author and his/her other works as well. You will be questioned about other works by the same author or similar books that are available. Make sure you can explain why you chose a specific genre.

How effective do you find the teaching technique in IIM Ahmedabad?

AT
Abhishek Tiwari Posted On : December 7th, 2022
Hons in Engineering, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (Graduated 1978)

The lecture method, case method, or a combination of the two will be used depending on the subject being taught or discussed and on how the professor doing with this method.

Some are best taught using the case method, while others prefer the lecture method, but many others require a combination of the two.

Class participation, role-playing, and individual or group assignments are all important.

Obviously, Stanford has a much better overall global reputation and excellent rankings. Stanford University is ranked third in the list of Best Global Universities. But, when you have enough information, only you can decide which is better for you in your overall situation, and only that should matter to you.

How difficult is the GD-PI round at IIM Ahmedabad? What exactly happened and how did you prepare for it refer to the details?

JT
Jennifer Thomas Posted On : December 23rd, 2022
Studied at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad

Yes, it is extremely competitive, particularly in the GD at IIM Ahmedabad. You would now have WAT (Written Analysis Test).

You should prepare for GD by reading 3 to 4 topics per day, reading magazines and newspapers, using the internet, and taking notes in a notebook. Draw diagrams and try to construct a thought structure for each topic. This approach should be useful unless and until you are a voracious news reader/consumer. And, yes, keep a physical notebook. Prepare all common questions for PI, such as Why MBA, Tell Me Something About Yourself, and so on. Perform some mock interviews. If you can get your hands on some alumni, conduct mock interviews with them.

For all call-getters, IMS organizes an Achievers' Workshop (with some consent to claim your credentials, if you get selected). Mock interviews are conducted by IIM (including IIMA) alumni during the IMS workshop. Mock interviews are essential; conduct at least three to four over the course of a month to improve your interview skills. Do your own soul-searching and plan your responses before the mocks. Structure implies having a reason for saying what you said.
