Which is better, Electrical Engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar or Mechanical Engineering at IIT BHU?

IT
Ishika Tiwari Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Tech Electrical Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2020)

IIT Bhubaneswar and IIT BHU both are among the reputed institutes for engineering in India. IIT BHU is ranked 11th while IIT Bhubaneswar is ranked 17th by MHRD in 2019. Both the IITs provide students with good academic experience and decent placements.

Talking about IIT BHU then the department of Mechanical Engineering came into existence in 1919. Over the past 100 years, the department has grown four folds to become the largest department in IIT(BHU), Varanasi. It offers a 4-year bachelor of technology program to the students who are admitted through JEE Advanced. The curriculum is periodically updated and designed in such a way that provides students with problem-solving skills and innovation of new technologies. Here in IIT BHU infrastructural facilities are great for research for a wide range of specializations such as Machine Design, Thermal and Fluid Engineering, Production Engineering and Industrial Management. They also focus on innovation so they have CST UP Incubation Center for grass root innovators started in 2018 under Mechanical Engineering Department. The placement scenario in IIT BHU is quite good. Out of 120 students, 109 were placed in the Mechanical Department in 2019 with an average offer of 8 Lacs per annum.

Electrical engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar is also good. School of Electrical Sciences at IIT Bhubaneswar offers a good academic and research-oriented environment. It was established in 2008. There are already 200+ ongoing research projects and have a fund of more than INR 1 billion. The department is engaged in a wide spectrum of research in emerging and innovative technologies through nationally and internationally funded sponsored research. The average placement in Electrical was 8.5 lacs per annum and almost 86% are placed in 2019. Most of the students were able to get jobs in the core-sector.

Both the institutes are of equal importance and the branches are also pretty good and offer plenty of opportunities. But IIT BHU has the 100 years old Legacy and has one of the biggest and well-connected alumni bases in our country. So here IIT BHU has an edge over IIT Bhubaneswar. But at last, branch and interest matters more than college.

Should I choose NIT Calicut CSE or IIT BHU chemical Engineering?

SB
Sumit Barua Posted On : August 27th, 2021
B.Tech from Jadavpur University (2021)

If you are interested in coding and aim to work in good corporate firms, then it is suggested that you go for CSE at NIT Calicut. But if you want an IIT tag, you can opt for IIT BHU. But this won't matter much afterward.

So, if you are focused on doing research then Chemical Engineering at IIT BHU will be a good option. You can also learn coding on the sidelines, which might be beneficial if you sit for placements.

Parametres CSE at NIT Calicut Chemical Engineering at IIT BHU
Tuition Fee INR 16,000 INR 6.7 LPA
Placement Percentage 73.5% 71%
Average Package INR 11.57 LPA INR 16.27 LPA

The choice of studying in a college pursuing a particular subject is entirely up to you. Check where your strengths and weaknesses lie and then choose accordingly. Both institutes are good in their own way. But it is your hard work and dedication that will prove if CSE or Chemical will be good for you.

Which has the better coding culture, IIT BHU or MNNIT Allahabad?

AS
Ashutosh Sahu Posted On : August 14th, 2020
M.Tech Biomedical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2013)

Both IIT BHU and MNNIT Allahabad are old and well-reputed colleges and offer good CSE programs in terms of academics and placements.

Being an old NIT, MNNIT Allahabad offers decent placement and the placement rate for CSE at this institute is around 97.60%. In the 2019, 163 students were placed out of 167 students from the CSE department and the average CTC offered was around 15.12 LPA. Whereas, the highest CTC went up to 36 LPA. IIT BHU had a 100% placement from the CSE department and the average CTC ranged between 10 LPA to 58 LPA.

But IIT BHU offers a better coding culture than MNNIT Allahabad. In IIT BHU almost every student gets engaged in coding, irrespective of their branch which makes for a rich coding culture on the campus. Many students were selected in Google Summer of Coding (GSoC) in 2018. Many freshers start competitive coding from the very beginning of their course. The programming society is quite active here, students participate in technical activities and various coding competitions. The results of inter IIT coding competitions are proof of IIT BHU’s growing popularity in coding.

What are the facility discriminations between BHU and IIT BHU students?

PG
Pratiti Ghosh Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Tech Computer Science, Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2020)

There are not many discriminations in the facility between BHU and IIT BHU students as such. However, there might be a few things that would become observable in the coming years. That would be the infrastructural progress of the IIT’s campus, and that’ll purely be because the Govt. issues a separate fund to all the IITs and the University doesn’t come under that clause. Also, being an IIT, it has to show significant improvements facility-wise in order to remain an institute of that stature. For example, the indoor sports complex of the IIT campus will be a world-class facility for the sport-enthusiasts. Also, there are a couple of hostels under construction, and they’ll be facilitated with the latest technology, and that won’t be the case for any other hostel on the University campus.

Is the content taught in CSE in IIT Bombay tougher than that taught in IIT BHU?

SS
Samita Saha Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Tech CSE from IIT Bombay (2020)

CSE has been at the top and has become the branch that has ruled over core branches for more than a decade now. Even though CSE course works are given specific modifications by each college separately, though the major outline of the course work is still quite similar.

IIT Bombay has explicitly designed the course for CSE to provide students more in-depth knowledge about algorithms by introducing subjects such as Discrete Structures, Data Analysis and Interpretation, and Introduction to Electrical and Electronics Circuits. These subjects are mainly introduced to help students develop skill sets required to understand how a machine works and to give a deeper understanding of how to analyze data and structure. These particular subjects are introduced prior to Coding so that it would enhance their understanding which directly relates to a better understanding of Algorithms.

Whereas the course works of IIT BHU involve subjects such as Probability and Statistics, Engineering Mechanics, and Discrete Math. Though, these subjects are important but not as challenging as proposed by IIT-Bombay. Subjects such as Algorithms, Operating Systems and Artificial Intelligence are introduced by IIT BHU in the 4th Semester, and in comparison to IIT-B, it can be said that CSE course work of IIT BHU provides students a slow start.

What are the hostel facilities in IIT BHU?

SD
Shobhan Dasgupta Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Sc. from Banaras Hindu University (2017)

The institute many hostels for both boys and girls, and most of them are about 50-60 years old. The rooms in the old ones are cramped, unlike the new ones, where are quite spacious. Even then, the rooms are pretty much compact, according to the number of students in a room. When one enters the room for the first time, he will be somewhat reluctant to live here because it will be too filthy with spider webs everywhere in the room, along with some used stuff of previous occupants. Hostel administration offers a bed, table, and chair. Cupboards are already inside the room, which will be shared. In a wholly arranged room with couches, tables, and chairs, there will be no space to walk, but very spacious corridors and lawns make up for it. Vishwakarma Hostel corridors are so long that one will hesitate to go from one end to another. Each of the has basic amenities like sufficient numbers of bathrooms and water coolers.

Apart from these, hostels have common rooms, canteens, mess, TV Room, badminton court, TT tables, lawns, and high-speed internet, accessible via Wi-Fi and LAN.

All the complaints of the students are taken very seriously by the hostel administration. The authorities act promptly on any grievance or criticism of the students. There are no restrictions on the time of entry and exit from the hostel. Also, the food in the hostel messes is much better than any other IIT's mess food. The hostels of IIT BHU are quite good, and they end up being the most cherished places during the time of stay in IIT BHU.

What is better, IIT BHU civil or chemical ?

RG
Radhika Girdhar Posted On : August 13th, 2020
Studied Civil Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2017)

The answer to this question depends on what you aim for after 4 or 5 years of your college degree. If you just want a placement and not particularly interested in a branch then you could go for any of those two branches as placement statistics are good for both in IIT BHU. There are enough opportunities in the non-core sector which generally comprise IT, developer, analytics, product management, business analyst, etc. These sectors don't look for a specific branch and rather require good communication and analytical skills.

Coming to the core sectors, both civil and chemical provide diverse opportunities in these areas. If you are someone who finds chemical processing and chemistry interesting, then go for chemical engineering. If you are the one who gets amazed by the interesting and defying structures, civil engineering should be your choice. According to 2019 placement statistics, 77 students from Civil Engineering and 104 students from Chemical Engineering got placed from IIT BHU.

Opting for civil engineering would open doors to exams such as IES, UPSC, GATE, and other state engineering exams. There are ample opportunities for civil engineering majors. And if you choose chemical engineering, you can go for higher studies or work for PSUs. So, both these branches at IIT BHU would provide enough opportunities to grow and explore and the end decision should be based on your interest.
