Is the MTech in computer science at IIT, Madras hectic?

AS
Abhijeet Sukla Posted On : March 31st, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Madras (2018)

The M.Tech program in Computer Science at IIT Madras is considered a demanding graduate-level degree program that requires a strong grasp of computer science concepts and a high level of dedication and hard work. However, with the right approach and attitude, it can be a very enriching experience.

The level of difficulty of MTech depends on the courses you have specifically opted for and the professors teaching you. Some professors like to take the reins and have strict rules in terms of attendance and assignment submission deadlines while some have a laid-back attitude and leave it up to the students to be punctual and make the most out of the classes.

The project you chose for the second year and your guide also determines whether you will have a hectic schedule or can spare some time for leisure activities and hobbies. Choose wisely as these 2 years are very important in shaping your career. However, one should be ready to commit completely to their course and invest maximum time possible.

Which is the better option, an MS at IIT Madras or an M.Tech at IIT Bhubaneswar?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : June 16th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

My brother completed his M.S. in Electrical Engineering recently from IIT Madras and recommends it highly to everybody. Here is why you should prefer IIT Madras MS to IIT Bhubaneswar MTech.

  • Better research culture and opportunities
  • Better and diverse student body
  • Highly qualified faculty
  • The job prospects offered at IIT Madras are way better than at IIT Bhubaneswar.
  • IIT Madras being older has a much more elaborate alumni base.
  • Vast Alumni network.
  • If you haven’t taken a gap after B.Tech and your GPA in MS first year is more than 8, you can switch to Ph.D.
  • Better student exchange and internship opportunities.
  • IIT Madras being one of the oldest IITs is a brand in itself.

The only flaw is the long duration of the course; 2.5 - 3 year's which leaves no time for preparing for competitive exams like UPSC.

What is the procedure to convert into a dual degree from B.tech at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM)?

VA
Vishal Ahluwalia Posted On : November 22nd, 2020
B.Tech. Computer Science, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (2012)

IIT Madras (IITM) is ranked 1st in the Engineering category by NIRF Ranking 2019. They have a strong and highly qualified faculty of 630 members, most of them being PhD holders and have a student strength of 6638.

BTech in IITM is a 4 year full time undergraduate course. Students after completing their 10+2 and securing a JEE Advanced rank can apply for a BTech program.

BTech and MTech dual degree is a 5 year course which will give students a both a Bachelors and Masters degree in Technology or Engineering.

Process of Conversion into a Dual degree

  • The change will be initiated at the end of the 1st semester.
  • Overall GPA of the 1st semester will be considered.
  • This might depend on the vacancies.
  • The process involves filling out a form and signing with the Faculty Advisor and HoD.
  • The strength of a class should not fall below the existing strength by more than 10% and should not go above the sanctioned strength by more than 10% percent.
  • The cut off of the CGPA is 7.5 and higher.
  • After the 7th semester it is not allowed to change the degree from BTech to Dual degree.

The advantages of taking a dual degree (BTech + MTech) gives the students an opportunity to receive both degrees with a year to spare. Unlike doing BTech and MTech separately which will take 6 years to complete whereas a dual degree will take 5 years to complete.

How was your experience of doing an MS in the mechanical engineering department at IIT Madras?

TB
Tithi Banerjee Posted On : June 17th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2021)

My brother pursued his MS in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras back in 2016 and these are some of his experiences for the overall MS program offered at IIT Madras-

  1. The MS program at IIT Madras is extremely fulfilling for students who want to pursue a career in research by going for a Ph.D. and Post Doc.
  2. The MS program is different from the M.Tech program. The M.Tech program is highly coursework oriented and is a better choice for securing a job.
  3. IIT Madras has, over the years, made efforts to give MS graduates an equal chance at placements.
  4. MS students tend to focus a lot more on their thesis as compared to M.Tech students.
  5. MS students are given an extra year to submit their thesis (2+1).
  6. An MS student, by the time of placement, will have worked extensively on a scientific topic and published at least one article in a reputed journal, or his article will be under review.
  7. This research work holds benefits during placements. The MS student’s CV is made impressive and data analysis and scientific reporting skills are highlighted. A little smart work will help you convince your interviewer of how these skills make you a suitable candidate for the offered position.
  8. Very few IITs offer an MS degree and many employers are unaware of this course.
  9. The MS degree becomes demanding and tough because you need to get an article published in an international journal to obtain your degree.

Though not specific to the Mechanical branch, I hope this information about the MS program at IIT Madras helped you gain important insights regarding the same.

What should be written in research proposal IIT Madras Direct PhD?

RB
Ranjini Banerjee Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Research Scholar at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

This answer is based on the assumption that you already have an experience of research in your previous degree in a particular area of interest and you are willing to expand it through Ph.D. The research proposal should be based on this area of expertise only and the prescribed word limit should be followed. A research proposal for a Direct Ph.D. program at IIT Madras should include:

  • A clear and concise statement of the research problem or question
  • A review of the relevant literature and current state of knowledge on the topic
  • A description of the research methods and techniques that will be used to investigate the problem
  • A detailed plan for data collection and analysis
  • A discussion of the expected outcomes and contributions of the research to the field.

Let me explain this with the help of an example. You have a previous Master's degree in Biotechnology with work experience in cell culture. But you want to expand your research in cancer. Write a detailed idea of what, how, and why you are willing to conduct research in this field.

Your proposal will give a better picture of your research expertise and your level of knowledge to the panels and they will evaluate you based on your previous degree score, GATE score, written exam score, and viva performance apart from the proposal.

The research proposal primarily helps you in short-listing the professors under which you will work based on their area of research. You don’t need to be working on the topic you wanted and might have to work on the professor's research work.

Your proposal should portray your area of research work that is possible to be completed in 2-3 years.

How hectic is life at IIT Madras for Mtech in Thermal Engineering?

AS
Abhijeet Sukla Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Madras (2018)

The entire first year of an MTech in Thermal Engineering student at IIT Madras revolves around tremendous coursework. Once you have completed your first year, you are expected to select your guide for the research work you will be doing the next year.

The second year is also very hectic in which the entire 3rd semester is spent on placements and the 4th semester consists of thesis work. The entire program is hectic and it’s advisable to pull your socks from the first year itself, or else you will face problems during placements.

To get a good package from a good company, make sure your CGPA does not go lower than 7.5-8. If your basics are strong, you will spend less time doing your assignments and preparing for exams thus relaxing your tight schedule a bit.

How is the coding culture in IIT Madras?

SR
Subhajeet Rana Posted On : July 30th, 2021
IIT Madras (2018)
It is indeed quite good. There is a club named Webops that deals with projects regarding the building of websites.
  • There is also a student mob-ops/web-ops team. Recently they developed an IITM students app which is great. The app has an entire professional feel to it and works quite well.
  • Then there is Sarang and Shastra which is IITM's technical and cultural fest respectively. There are opportunities for students who are into coding as well.
  • These technical fests can help you enhance your back-end/front-end programming skills and UI designing by simply participating in them. The team’s support and encouragement would grant you massive exposure. There are opportunities around game creation/design as well.
  • There is also a Computer Vision group that works on computer vision programs and OpenCV. They essentially work on AI, machine learning, deep learning, etc. Recently, they had built a robot that was so advanced that it solved a sudoku puzzle.
  • There is another club which is the competitive programming club that includes people who are interested in competitive coding.
Hope this gives you an idea about the coding culture at IIT Madras.
