Why don't students resist the 85% attendance rule in IIT BHU ?

SD
Soham Dey Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2017)

In IIT BHU, the least required attendance is 85 percent for each course. The majority of the students find the attendance rule a little bit annoying but do not oppose it. This is because if students fail to maintain the required minimum attendance, the institute takes disciplinary measures. They may not get permitted to appear in the end semester exam or their registration for the course may get canceled. Students who fail to keep 85% attendance are often awarded Z grade for the course. This grade appears in the grade card until they complete the course with success. No one wants to do something which reflects badly on their future. Moreover, almost every IIT has such rules.

There is no special remedy for casual absenteeism. Only in special cases, the students are granted leave. If a student has health issues, then they can remain absent. They will have to submit an application for his absence with a proper medical certificate. Also, if a student has to go to other places for any competition, then they can ask for leave. The college grants leave if a student really needs it.

Is there a freshers’ party at IIT BHU?

AS
Anusha Singh Posted On : August 13th, 2020
Studied Civil Engineering & Structural Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2020)

Yes, there is a Freshers party in IIT BHU, sophomores organize the party before the end of even semester. Which marks the end of the first years' freshers tag. The party offers a conducive environment for interaction between the students of both years. It also helps to develop a strong bond between them, which is crucial for the first years, as they rely on their seniors for guidance related to coursework and career choices. Although a lot of branches have discontinued this practice, it still is a popular way of interaction. The party-spot is usually a hotel with a swimming pool. This also gives an alternate name to this party- 'Pool Party.' Plenty of drinks and food options are available. The party usually lasts for 6-7 hours at a stretch. The time spent here is memorable and becomes a cherished memory of college life. The seniors don't practice ragging while at the party in any form. The freshers may be asked to give a formal introduction, but other than that, there is no record of ragging. All in all, it makes the party jovial and joyous for the freshers and is worth attending.

Why has IIT BHU never managed a team in ACM-ICPC World Finals?

VC
Varun Chatterjee Posted On : August 13th, 2020
B. Tech. Computer Science & Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2020)

The reason behind why IIT BHU has never reached to ACM-IPC world finals is the lack of proper guidance and preparation. There are many good coders in IIT BHU and they practice competitive coding very seriously. In the past, students from IIT BHU reached the regionals but did not go ahead with the preparation for global finals as they fetched good job offers. Many coders have the potential to reach the finals, but they stop putting serious efforts when they are assured that they will be placed in their dream companies. Also, there was a lack of proper junior-senior interaction in the past years due to which proper guidance to reach the finals was not given. This trend has now been changed and now every week interaction sessions are being organized so that the first-year students are motivated properly from the very beginning. In these sessions, important algorithms are discussed and home works for the next session are being given. All these sessions are being organized and managed by Club Of Programmers (COPS). Because of these sessions, the students are well motivated from their first year itself and the number of blue coders on Codeforces has been increased from 2 to 7 and one of the students is Purple coder which means he is the highest-rated coder on codeforces. Because of their efforts, the coding culture of IIT BHU  has been improved and IIT BHU  secured second place at Kolkata-Kanpur regionals, so they will be representing the college for the world finals.
