What things should I do in order to get into IIM Ahmedabad? I am a second-year mechanical engineering student, scored 96.4% in 10th and 75% in 12th.
Unfortunately, you can’t get into IIM Ahmedabad as they look for students with an exceptional academic record.
If you belong to the general category, your 12th score is insufficient to get you an interview call. A general engineering male student with less than 90 percent in 12th will have to get 100 percentile in CAT to even expect a call from IIM Ahmedabad.
Good MBA colleges like IIMC and FMS do not heavily rely on the 12th scores. But even IIMC requires an 80 percentile in 12th, or else, at least 99.99 percentile in CAT. A friend of mine scored 72% in his 12th, and a 99.98 percentile in his CAT. But he didn’t receive an interview call simply because of his 12th score.
The competition is especially harsh for engineers as IIM Ahmedabad tries to intake students from diverse educational backgrounds.
Do not be disheartened and research the requirements of other top Business Schools for your MBA.
After IIM Calcutta was started next IIM should have been started in Bombay which is Commercial capital of India but why it has been started in Ahmedabad?
The first two IIMs were supposed to be in Mumbai and Calcutta. While the land and approvals for Calcutta came relatively easily, the then-Mumbai state government refused to allot land for an IIM in Mumbai and acted rather casually.
Meanwhile, Vikram Sarabhai, the driving force behind the IIMs concept, was eager to get the IIMs up and running as soon as possible. He was well known for his extensive business and political connections, but his entire industrial and research infrastructure was in Ahmedabad (in the then-newly created state of Gujarat).
Vikram Sarabhai was so eager to get the IIM started in western India (one in the east and one in the west was the initial logic, which was followed by one in the south and one in the north as well) that he pulled all the strings for an IIM in Ahmedabad. For the first few years, IIMA was based in Vikram Sarabhai's personal bungalow in Ahmedabad's Shahi Baug area.
He was also the driving force behind the recruitment of other IIMA legends, including Louis Kahn for the architectural plan, Kastoorbhai Lalbhai of Arvind Mills for the donation of all land for the campus, and the mesmerizing Ravi J. Matthai, the institute's first full-time director.
What should I do as an undergrad to get into IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore or IIM Calcutta?
As an undergraduate, you must complete the following tasks:

Better 10th and 12th-grade point averages, at least above 80% in both.

Maintain your academic focus.

Choose a non-engineering subject for your undergraduate studies. It will help your profile.

Attempt to score above the 99th percentile on the CAT. If you want, you can do coaching during your undergrad.

Enhance your communication and writing abilities. This will be beneficial in WAT and GD/PI. If you want, you can join Toastmasters or start a blog.

If you want, try to participate in some extracurricular activities. This will not improve your IIM chances (unless you have a national-level certificate), but it will add some vibrancy to your profile. Activities can range from being a member of a club or placement cell to creating your own YouTube channel.

Perform some internships or work as a freelancer on a project. It will provide fodder for conversation in interviews.
How is the academic associate position at IIM Ahmedabad?
At IIM Ahmedabad you get to learn from the faculty members when you get to assist them. There are lots of discussions, planning, execution that go into the work of Academic associates. Yes, it is one lot of overwhelming experience at IIM-Ahmedabad.
So, this is the job profile of an Academic Associate at IIM A:
- The area Chair may assign you to work with faculty members.
- You may need to assist faculty members in activities related to course design or delivery of any program. This may include helping in the preparation/revision, of course, making a reading list, handing out class notes, making presentation slides or stimulation, etc.
- The job profiles also include grading and correcting assignments, quizzes, answer sheets, projects, etc.
- You have to participate in all briefings, discussions, and training organized by the instructor(s), academic officers, program chairpersons, Dean, RSDEC, and Area Chair.
- You may have to do attendance marking and tabulation, class participation marking, track the progress of class projects, assignments, set up teaching aids if instructed.
- You may have to provide tutorial support including remedial classes if instructed by the faculty.
- You have to coordinate with academic offices like PGP, PGP-FABM, PGPX, FP, FDP, EEP, and other support offices.
- You have to participate in invigilation duties and pre-examination briefing and post-examination debriefing with faculties.
- You are required to report instances of students’ behavior that violates the institute’s code of conduct.
- You have to assist faculty in their research, case writing, teaching note/exercise development, and paper writing.
- You will have to learn skills, techniques, and software applications required to carry out high-quality research and academic work same as faculty members.
- Under the guidance of faculties, you have to initiate research and do project work.
- You may need to coordinate with the R&P Office, Case Unit, etc. for matters related to dissemination of research output, registration of cases/teaching notes, etc.
This is an amazing experience to not only know your peers but also your teachers. This creates a bond and understanding between teacher and students. You get to learn the tricks and techniques from the faculties about teaching.
Is IIM Calcutta better than IIM A for Finance majors?
It is, indeed. By far.
Whether you want a tech role, a front-end IB role, a PE/VC role, trading, algo trading, a hedge fund or quant role, a risk manager or a financial regulator role, or even a research career in finance, IIM C is by far India's best offering. In terms of both absolute placement rates and batch percentage, IIM C has the highest placement rates in India's finance industry.
IIM A or ISB Hyderabad? Which one should I choose now that I have got a call from both of these schools?
Academics are brilliant at both of these institutes. They both follow case study pedagogy. But they are different from each other in many ways.
Here are some differences between them to help you find a better match for your PGPM-
- IIM Ahmedabad is much older, and has a rich legacy. ISB Hyderabad is comparatively new.
- ISB follows the European model of 1 year PGPM. IIMA offers 2 year PGPM, and 1 year PGPX.
- Even though the fee of PGP is higher at ISB, the course duration is lower at this college. This makes the short term ROI similar for both.
- ISB requires a minimum 2 year work experience from its applicants. On the other hand, freshers comprise over 25% of a PGPM batch at IIMA.
- The average work experience of an ISB PGPM batch is around 4.7 years, the same for an IIMA PGPM batch is less than 2 years.
- Recruiters at IIMA seek candidates with a strong academic and extra-curricular record, but low work-experience. This is especially true for marketing firms, which are the biggest recruiters at IIMA. Thus, you might face difficulty in finding roles suited to your profile and experience at IIMA. But in this case, you may consider the PGPX program offered by IIM Ahmedabad.
- IIMA PGPM and PGPX courses record higher average salaries as compared to ISB. But this can be explained by the much higher student intake of ISB.
I would recommend you choose the college that best suits your profile and career goals. Both of these business schools are highly renowned and good in their own way.
What is the minimum salary at IIM Ahmedabad after placements?
The lowest package offered during IIM Ahmedabad PGP placements 2021 was INR 11 LPA. The “Maximum Earning Potential” component is considered while calculating the highest package.
Why is IIM Bangalore not rated as highly as IIM Calcutta? Why doesn't it have any notable alumni like IIM Ahmedabad and Calcutta? Is it worth the money?
In terms of NIRF 2023 Management Rankings, IIM Bangalore ranked higher than IIM Calcutta. Even in the FT Global rankings 2023 for MBA, IIM Bangalore ranked 52, whereas IIM Calcutta ranked 76.
The alumni of IIM Bangalore are more into research and academia.IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta were open to private-sector jobs since their establishment. IIM Bangalore, on the other hand, was established to produce public sector managers. It was opened for private sector jobs in the late 1990s. IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta had a headstart there which is why they have a greater number of notable alumni in the private sector. Even then, IIM Bangalore does have a good number of alumni in the private sector.
IIM Bangalore is an institution of global recognition and repute. It will offer you all the opportunities and necessary guidance to become successful in your career.
What is the salary of an IIM Ahmedabad pass out after 10 years?
There are numerous possible answers to this question. People can start well, start poorly but do well in the long run, or get extremely lucky with the company they choose. For example, a person who graduates with the average salary of the batch is likely to be earning 4.5-5X their first-year package after ten years if they perform consistently and do not deviate from their growth path in any way. The ratios will obviously differ if you start at a lower or higher salary than the average.
Furthermore, switching companies for faster growth would provide you with a package similar to what a reasonably successful person who stays with the same company may receive.
What is the list of famous case studies taught at IIM Ahmedabad?
It is tough to list cases over different subjects as there is a huge number of cases available. It is very doubtful that the same cases will remain popular always. It completely depends upon the faculty who decides to choose the cases for explaining a concept.
Case-studies:
- The faculty are generally suggested to use cases within the last five to ten years. This is essential for maintaining the currency of the subject.
- For instance, a course on e-commerce taught with a case developed in the early years of the internet will not be relatable for the students. As a lot has changed in the start-up domain. Currently, a case on Ola will make a lot more sense to the students than how the HDFC Bank introduced internet banking.
- For an executive program at IIM, one of my teachers chose a case on Yahoo immediately after Marissa Mayer took over and asked the students to design a strategy for Yahoo. As the conclusions in Yahoo unfolded it made a lot more sense to the students to compare their own perspective with what Meyer did.
One of my friends' field was Information Technology. Some of the cases, he studies during his diploma are as follows.
- ERP implementation at CISCO.
- E-commerce at Dell.
The cases developed by IIMA are still the Harvard cases which are more popular at IIMA. There are several cases available from Stanford, Columbia, and some Asian business schools as well.
