What is your review of FPM (Fellow Programme in Management), IIM Ahmedabad?
FPM offered by IIM Ahmedabad is a 4-year long doctoral course in the various specializations of management. It offers specialization in Information Systems, Business Policy, Human Resource Management, Innovation and Management in Education, Strategy, etc.
Here are a few major points regarding the program that you should consider
- The program comprised 3 modules containing compulsory and elective courses. You can study 2 specializations.
- You cannot pursue this program alongside working somewhere as this is a full-time residential course.
- IIM Ahmedabad FPM annual fee is INR 2 to INR 13 lakhs. You will be glad o know that the tuition fee is completely waived and a monthly stipend is also provided.
- Although the duration is 4 years some might take 5 years to complete it. Also, you cannot opt for distance learning.
- The future aspects are both academic as well as in the corporate sector.

Rather than just academics, IIM Ahmedabad students are interviewed on an overall basis. That is various aspects like extracurricular activities, leadership skills and behaviour management are also tested in the interview round.
Social clubs and college societies are also a part of your interview. But not the most important part though. Some might get selected even without much involvement in clubs while some might not get selected even with much involvement in the same.
You usually are asked about your hobbies to which you can simply answer anything you like doing in your leisure time. It can be as simple as reading novels also. More than anything your confidence while answering the question matters the most.

My sister was in Yogesh Jindal’s batch and had asked about his understanding of finance concepts. Most 100 percentilers get a call from IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta, because of IIM Ahmedabad’s clause of taking the top 50 candidates, and IIM Calcutta’s extraordinary weightage to the CAT percentile for shortlisting. Other necessary conditions include
- Students must have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate or equivalent CGPA.
- The bachelor's degree must entail a minimum of three years of education along with 10+2 or equivalent.
- The conversion of marks or CGPA will be followed as per the norms of the university/institute from which the student has graduated.
Apart from this, your 10th and 12th scores, work experience, and gender diversity are also taken into consideration.

IIM Ahmedabad has decided to give little importance to the bachelor's degree components from the shortlisting criteria and to apply it uniformly to all the candidates. The AR now will be computed on a scale of 25 (considering class 10th marks, class 12th marks, and the candidate's work experience) and the points will be pro-rated to 35.
The following formula will now be used for computing the Composite Score (CS):
CS = 0.35* Pro-rated AR Score/35 + 0.65* Normalized overall CAT Score
Pro-rated AR Score= [(AR score computed by taking 0 points for Bachelor’s degree)/25] * 35.

A friend of mine faced a similar dilemma when he was torn between choosing IIM Ahmedabad (MBA) and Stanford (MS). He went for IIM Ahmedabad in the end. He considered the following factors before making this decision:

Geographical factors: If you want to stay in India then MBA from IIM Ahmedabad is the best choice. But if you are certain you want to settle abroad, MS from Stanford is a good choice.

Nature of career: Comparing the nature of both the courses, we find that MBA is a general one while MS is specific. MBA is related to business and management while MS is technical. Based on your interests and aspirations one can easily make a choice between the two.
If you are still unable to decide then know that you can pursue MBA in the US even after MS. The latter will offer you more opportunities.
Which is better, MIT Sloan vs IIM Ahmedabad?
MIT Sloan is a much bigger brand, and it will open many more doors for you.
IIMA is highly popular in India, but MIT Sloan has a world-wide reputation.
MIT will give you much more exposure than IIM Ahmedabad. At MIT, you’ll study with a much more diverse crowd and take lectures from Nobel laureates. MIT will offer you plenty of opportunities, some of which you never even thought existed. At IIM Ahmedabad, you'll study solely to be placed in top MNCs.
As long as you can afford its fee, you shouldn’t worry about MIT’s ROI. You’ll recover the study cost in virtually no time. MIT and Princeton especially offer the best MFin program in the world.
