How is Thapar University for South Indians (Telugu states)?

RG
Rudra Ghose Posted On : August 7th, 2023
B.Tech from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (2020)

Thapar University is one of the oldest and most reputed universities with a legacy of more than 60 years. It usually is a backup choice for those who couldn’t make it to IITs and NITs. Here are some snippets of the institute

  • Faculty: The faculty is a big bag comprising both experienced as well as average professors. Most professors who speak Hindi, speak in English when asked to do so by the South Indians, so language isn’t a problem.
  • Exposure: To be honest, a South Indian studying with a North Indian crowd is itself a new experience. Students are exposed to everything, be it sports, coding, or public speaking, through well-established societies.
  • Language barrier: You might face a little language issue especially if you don’t understand Hindu at all. But after a few months, you will be able to understand the essential words and that’s more than enough to survive here.
  • Sports: Thapar University is the best place for engineering aspirants who don’t want to relinquish their passion for sports.
  • Transport: Transport isn’t a major issue in Punjab. You can get flights easily and also travel by train.

In all, Thapar University can be considered for engineering if you did not make it to IITs, NITs, BITS, DTU, and IIITs.

Which college should I choose between UIET Chandigarh and Thapar University for CSE?

MA
Madhav Aneja Posted On : August 8th, 2023
Lived in Chandigarh, India

To help you choose between UIET and Thapar University, here are a few comparisons-

  • Infrastructure- The infrastructure of UIET is not good. Thapar University has a good infrastructure and you will really like it when you visit the institution. Also, do check the pictures of Thapar on instagram.
  •  Fees- The fees for Thapar University is extremely high. On the other hand, UIET fees are so affordable that you won’t even feel like you are paying college fees.
  • Research- Panjab University is doing good in the area of research. But UIET in itself has not produced much output yet. On the other hand, Thapar excels in research quality. However, PU has a government funded innovation center and you may get an internship over there. This makes UIET also a good choice for a career in research.
  • Brand Value- Panjab University is a big brand. However, its Engineering department is not as well recognized. Thapar is a well known engineering institution that has a high reputation in North India. It has a brand value at par with BITS and NITs.
  • Alumni Network- UIET is new and has virtually no alumni network. Thapar is old enough and has a wide alumni network spread across various countries.

Thus, after considering various parameters, I would suggest you to opt for Thapar University for your CSE if its high fees is not an issue.

Is there any problem faced by non-Punjabis at Thapar University?

NS
Nidhi Sen Posted On : August 7th, 2023
B.Tech from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (2019)

It’s true that Thapar University has a maximum Punjabi population because of its location. But this certainly does not mean that non-Punjabis feel out of place here. In fact, one of my friends from UP claimed that most of his friends are Punjabis because they are truly genuine and would help you in any way possible. Even the locals are very friendly and you won’t feel left out even for a moment.

I have many friends at Thapar University who are non-Punjabis but haven’t ever faced any kind of discrimination or discomfort there.

Moreover, Thapar has strict rules and regulations regarding the consumption of drug substances. Thapar has a Zero Tolerance Policy for Drugs and Alcohol on the University Campus.

So rest all your worries and come to Thapar University already!

What is the reputation of Thapar University's brand outside of India?

TS
Tania Sharma Posted On : August 8th, 2023

Thapar University has an H+ accreditation from Germany, which is the highest possible accreditation that a foreign institution can receive over there. Thus, a degree from Thapar is well recognized in Germany.

Thapar University has received this accreditation because its subjects are in line with those taught in German universities for similar degrees. A friend of mine who is a Thapar alumni will be joining FAU Germany for his Master’s. He gave me all this information. He has been offered a fully funded course for his higher education.

Thapar University students receive offers from top universities abroad. These institutions include- UCLA, UCSD, CMU, Columbia, GaTech, USC, Carnegie Mellon University ,UC Berkeley etc. Thapar University alumni have achieved great heights in the industry with alums working at senior positions in the head offices of top brands like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Walmart. Others have started their own ventures in foreign lands.

To sum it up,Thapar University is very well-recognized outside of India with its students achieving new heights in every domain.

Is there a uniform for BE students in Thapar University?

RS
Ritu Singh Posted On : August 10th, 2021
Studied at Delhi University (2019)

Some of my friends studied at Thapar University. According to them there's definitely no uniforms in Thapar University.

  • However, the first year students who have a 'khaki dress' will have to wear it for workshops.
  • This is compulsory not only for BE but the rest of the branches as well.
  • As an omnipresent rule for science programs, you'll have to wear a white coat/lab coat for some M.Sc. projects or practicals.
  • No need to worry about it being a daily state of affairs.
  • At times you'll have to show unity with a uniform as well, such as to affirm your stand for cultures through the Saturnalia and for technical stuff through Aranya.
  • These fests include modelling shows and you might want to join in and showcase your skills.

A uniform might be needed for these. Sometimes a faculty member might ask you to be in formals, they do expect that, but no restrictions as such.

What all happens in frosh week at the Thapar University?

TS
Taniya Sen Posted On : August 11th, 2021
B.Tech from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (2018)

Frosh week is a program initiated by the students of Thapar University. It is a week-long program that includes various events.

It is organized by the second and third-year students for the freshers. It gives them a chance to adjust to the new university life ahead and overcome the culture shock of an engineering college. The Frosh week organizers stand with - no ragging policy, healthy junior-senior interaction as well as intra-batch interactive sessions.

This platform provides the students an idea about the life ahead at Thapar University, the academic structure as well as the extra-curricular activities. It is basically an orientation to the 4-year long college life in a week.

They conduct workshops and lectures as well to loosen the tension among the freshers for their hectic life before the first semester. Events such as karaoke nights, sports mania, graffiti are a part of this splendid week too.

Does anybody go to Thapar University after dropping a year?

AN
Alisha Narang Posted On : August 6th, 2021
Studied at Pune University (2019)

Unwillingly yes, students go to Thapar University after dropping a year. A few of my friends are pursuing engineering from Thapar University. Here are some things that I got to know:

  • Students usually drop due to obvious reasons like not having good marks or a good rank to get a core branch in a decent NIT.
  • I got to know that a lot of people whom I connected with on the internet, were droppers studying at Thapar.
  • The purpose of dropping is to get a chance to study in a better college.
  • Students who drop could opt for Government colleges but those may have an average reputation.
  • So ultimately they choose to study at Thapar, which is comparatively better than the others.

Not all droppers are unsuccessful in their second attempt, many improve by working hard and having full determination.

GD
Gargi Debnath Posted On : August 9th, 2021
Studied at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology

You will surely need a laptop as you will learn a lot of new things. A laptop is also required for reading e-books and using essential software. You should get a laptop with a decent configuration. One that fits your budget. Here are some other instances where you might require a laptop.

  • During the first semester, with C and C++ as well as Java in the second semester.
  • As far as lectures are concerned, you will need a laptop for ED-II during the lecture.
  • When you are working on presentations and projects, a laptop will be handy.
  • You can also save up on money by downloading PDFs of reference books and reading them on your laptop.
  • Many technical workshops organized by different societies also require laptops.

Let me tell you that while the laptop might not be compulsory, it is definitely necessary. You can borrow one from your roommates or friends if you do not have the budget for it. But, have one handy.

How difficult is to get a CGPA of 8.5 in first year in Thapar University?

YA
Yohan Awasti Posted On : August 11th, 2021
B.E. from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (2020)

It is not at all a big deal to score 8.5 in the first year. Just focus during lecture hours and then just give a reading once in a while and dive into the books a little time before the exams especially during Midterms and End Semesters. This will fetch you great marks.

Also do take quizzes and sessionals seriously as they often become grade changes in many cases. Try to aim for 75 marks in each subject. Even if you fail, if you try you’ll end up getting 60+ in each subject and that is enough for getting 8.5 CGPA in the first year.
