What are modes of transportation in IIT Madras (Chennai)?

TB
Tithi Banerjee Posted On : March 30th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2021)

As a student of IIT Madras, you will have to travel to the Main Gate, Velachery gate, and your classes in the Class Room Complex located at a distance of 4,2, and 1 km respectively from your hostel. Some common ways of commuting inside the campus are

  • Walking: Some health freaks may prefer walking to and fro from the hostel to the CRC which is in reality a difficult task considering the hot climate.
  • Shuttle service: These buses are helpful if you need to get to the main gate or the Velachery gate in time or if your department is Engineering design or Naval Architecture and you don't have a cycle. These are known for their exceptionally high speed.
  • Bicycles: This is the most preferred means of transport inside the campus and is considered a blessing when you look at the long waiting lines for buses. The problem arises when it's time to repair these bicycles but is the IITians we are talking about here, who have a solution to every problem. Some enthusiastic students launched an app called CAVAL. Under this app, one needs to register on the app or the website and input their location or the location where their cycle is and a mechanic will come and he will repair their cycle.
  • Olas and Cabs: These are rarely seen inside the campus and are very expensive.

The most preferred means of transport for someone not owning a bicycle is the bus.

Which is good for M.Tech in Chemical Engineering IIT Kharagpur or Madras?

SG
Senjuti Gupta Posted On : March 27th, 2023
studied at IIT Kgp

IIT Madras is the best choice for MTech in Chemical Engineering. Some reasons that support my claim are

  • Being a metropolitan, Madras ensures better living standards and transport facilities thus attracting more faculty.
  • The R and D centers of most top MNCs are located in Bangalore and Mumbai. Owing to the proximity Madras is preferred over KGP.
  • Most process industries prefer BTech students over MTech students as chemical engineers. Only R and D and Consulting companies look for MTech students for core jobs.
  • Better facilities attract better students thus you will find a better class of peers at IIT Madras in contrast to IIT KGP.
  • The faculty comprises professors belonging to various fields and cultures whereas IIT KGP has more Bengali professors.

Thus, considering the demand for PG students and facilities at IIT Madras, it seems to be a better option for MTech than KGP.

Is IIT Madras a good option for humanities?

TB
Tushar Banerjee Posted On : March 24th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

While IIT Madras is a reputable technical institute, its humanities department is primarily a supporting department rather than a central focus. If you are considering pursuing humanities, it is important to keep in mind that not all institutions offer the same level of focus on this field of study.

It may be worth considering institutions that have a greater emphasis on this field. This will give you the opportunity to delve deeper into the subject and connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for the humanities.

Institutions that have a strong focus on the humanities may also have a different approach to teaching and learning compared to those with a more technical or science-based focus. This can be a valuable aspect of your educational experience, as it can expose you to different perspectives and ways of thinking.

Ultimately, the decision of where to pursue your studies is a personal one that should take into account your individual interests and goals. By researching and considering a range of institutions, you can make an informed decision that aligns with your educational and career aspirations.

How is the social life of a MS/MTECH student at IIT Madras?

AD
Anirban Dasgupta Posted On : March 30th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

The word “social life” barely exists in the dictionary of an MS/MTech student at IIT Madras. They spent their time holed up in labs. But some don’t want to miss out on campus life and leave no opportunity to have fun.

I have seen M.Tech students go to CFI, and participate in most events and talks like EMLs, TechSoc, LitSoc, Sports, Gym, Swimming, Art, volunteer, and some are even part of Shaastra, Saarang team.

These events are one kind of life experience and missing out on them means you are missing a major part of your college experience. Make sure you take breaks between the extensive research work and manage your time well in such a way that you can balance both extracurriculars and lab work. You will have a lot of time on your hand during vacations so make the most of it.

IIM Rohtak and IIM Raipur are both prestigious institutions. However, IIT Madras is ahead of them in terms of infrastructure, ranking, curriculum, and placement.

IIT Madras is famous for its various UG, PG, and PhD programs in the fields of engineering, science, architecture, management, and social sciences.

Here is why you should choose IIT Madras for your management studies-

  1. Connectivity and Campus Size: IIT Madras is a residential institute that is spread across 617 acres of land. The campus is located 12 km away from the Chennai Central Railway station, and 10 km away from the Chennai Airport. Thus IIT Madras is well connected to the rest of India.

IIM Rohtak is a top management institute in India. It is spread across 200 acres of land. The IIM Raipur campus is also spread across 200 acres of land in Atal Nagar, with the blissful mix of modern architecture, culture, and heritage of Chhattisgarh.

  1. Ranking: IIT Madras is ranked #227 by QS World University Rankings 2025. Other than that, it received a #3 rank by Asian University Rankings. The NIRF Ranking 2023 of IITM is # 1 under the overall category, and #15 under the management category.

IIM Rohtak ranked 12th in the management category of NIRF Ranking 2023, and IIM Raipur got the 11th rank.

  1. Placement: According to the 2024 placement report of DoMS, The Highest Package stood at INR 19.65 LPA, and the Average Package stood at INR 16.93 LPA. 32 companies participated in the recruitment of 84 students.
