As some of my friends studied at Thapar University, I am very well aware about the college and it’s mess facilities. Here’s sharing some things about the menu I got to know from my friends.

On Mondays:

  • Breakfast- Mix veg paratha, Marconi or pasta.
  • Lunch: Rajma Rice with Salty Lassi.
  • For dinner: Fried Rice, Manchurian and Kulfi.

Tuesday:

  • Breakfast- Aloo Paratha or poha.
  • Lunch- White channa, petha and green chutney
  • Dinner- Matar-paneer, Rice and custard

Wednesday:

  • Breakfast- Veg Macroni or onion Paratha.
  • Lunch- Tandoori roti with Dal makhni
  • Dinner- Moong Dal,nutri and spongy rasgulla.

Thursday:

  • Breakfast- Dal paratha/ bread pakora
  • Lunch- Aloo-puri and chutney
  • Dinner- Bhindi, Dal Makhni and Pastry.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday; you'd find that the breakfast would consist of a type of paratha again with availability of Daliya, poha or pasta at times. On Sunday, Amritsari naan is available at times for lunch and in dinner you might get an ice-cream, a chocolate or a gulab Jamun with the combination of Aloo-puri or paneer bhurji or palak-corn.

Which is a better option, BITS or Thapar University?

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : May 3rd, 2023

If you are considering Thapar University as an option for your higher education, it is important to understand its strengths and weaknesses as compared to other top colleges like IITs, NITs, BITS, and top IIITs. Here are some key points to consider:

Thapar University:

  • Good college: Thapar University is a well-regarded institute for higher education, offering a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in various fields.
  • Location advantage: If you are located in the northern region of India, Thapar University can be a good option for you due to its convenient location.
  • Average exposure: While Thapar University provides decent exposure in terms of academics, research, and extra-curricular activities, it may not match up to the level of some of the top institutes in the country.
  • Comparatively lower placements: Thapar University has good placement records, but it may not be able to match up to the high standards set by some of the top IITs, NITs, BITS, and IIITs in terms of job offers and salary packages.

On the other hand, if you are looking for better faculty, excellent placements, and no problems with the fee structure, BITS Pilani can be a better option for you. Here are some reasons why:

BITS Pilani:

  • Reputed institute: BITS Pilani is a highly reputed institute, known for its academic excellence, research output, and industry collaborations.
  • Excellent faculty: BITS Pilani has a team of highly experienced and qualified faculty members who are experts in their respective fields. They are committed to providing quality education and guidance to students.
  • Best-in-class exposure: BITS Pilani provides world-class exposure in terms of academics, research, extra-curricular activities, and industry collaborations. This exposure is one of the underlying reasons behind the success of students from this institute.
  • Higher placements: BITS Pilani has a strong placement record, with students being placed in top companies in various sectors. The average salary package offered to students is also relatively higher than that of Thapar University.
  • Higher fee structure: However, it is important to note that BITS Pilani has a comparatively higher fee structure as compared to Thapar University.

In conclusion, if you are located in the northern region of India and want a good college that offers decent exposure, Thapar University can be a suitable option for you. However, if you are looking for better faculty, and excellent placements, and are willing to pay a higher fee, BITS Pilani can be a better option for you.

Could Some seniors from Thapar University who bagged placements share what juniors could do to gain good placements?

DS

The seniors at Thapar University are really helpful and cooperative. Here are some things which might answer your question.

  • Finish CLRS “Introduction to Algorithms” textbook in your first year. This is the most important rule.
  • Start participating in programming contests, such as TopCoder SRMs, right from your first year.
  • Make sure you are a part of some cool projects in college.
  • Build your GitHub profile.
  • Engage in startup culture. Try to create jobs rather than looking for one.
  • Visit HackerNews (HN) every day. You'll learn great things and see cool projects worldwide.
  • Learn everything you can about Machine learning and Deep learning.
  • Play hard with CNNs, RNNs, GANs, etc. Try to create some cool projects around ML.
  • Engage in some real research work, better if under your professors and publish papers.
  • Study for placements during holidays.
  • Read “Cracking the coding interview”. Do placement questions from the career cup for your dream companies.
  • If you dream of Google, prepare hard for Google's APAC test. It is like another JEE.
  • Keep eye on reputed international internships and grab one if you can. Discuss more on this with your professors.

Lastly, it is suggested that you keep your body and mind fit. You need to stay healthy and think clearly during the placement process.

How is the student quality at Thapar University? The cutoffs are low and students who haven't even qualified for the Mains are being admitted there.

TS
Tania Sharma Posted On : August 7th, 2023

You cannot determine the quality of intake at any university just by their JEE Main ranks because one test is not enough to judge one’s performance. It’s not like a student with a high rank is better than a student with a low rank. You will be surprised to know that many times students with 150+ JEE Mains end up with a CGPA of less than 6 while students with less than 100 JEE Score are in the top 5 percent. Judging the students based on a number of criteria here is my opinion

  • Thapar University has a better student crowd than most engineering colleges.
  • Ragging is not tolerated here and there is a very good harmony between seniors and juniors
  • The students here aren’t much involved in alcohol unlike most engineering colleges these days.
  • There is a strong bond between the peers and the students are like a close-knit community.

In reality, it’s the ambiance and culture of the campus that determines the quality of the crowd it attracts. For instance, a top ranker may come to a bad college and lose all his motivation while a low ranker might come to a college with a healthy academic environment and might get motivated for the better.

So, I don’t believe that the student quality at Thapar University is any less than other engineering colleges.

Is Thapar University better than VIT placement-wise?

PS
Piyu Saha Posted On : August 12th, 2021
Studied at Thapar University (2019)

When placements are concerned, the better opportunities are secured by the student’s overall performance and rather than the college. But if I have to choose one among them, then I’d say Thapar receives better placement offers than VIT.

  • The number of students at VIT is greater than Thapar. So there is more competition for any particular job opportunity.
  • The number of companies visiting both campuses is almost equal.
  • The faculty at Thapar is highly educated and cooperative.
  • Students get enough industrial exposure through seminars, industrial visits, and internships.
  • Several mock group discussions and interview sessions are also conducted at Thapar to groom the students.
  • The college also has a lot of societies to improve the students’ soft skills.
  • It helps them in boosting their confidence and developing good communication skills.
Category Thapar University VIT
Total Fee INR 66,000 INR 1,73,000
Companies Visited Wipro, Adobe, Infosys, Bosch, etc. Wipro, Intel, TCS, Tech Mahindra, etc.
Highest Package 25 LPA 26 LPA
Average Package 14 LPA 15 LPA

The biggest factor is that a lot of companies visit Thapar and so it is easier to get a placement there. The placements are better in Thapar. But do remember that the placements completely depend on you and not the college. A lot of companies visit the college for placements but it is up to you the kind of effort that you wish to put in that will land you a job.

Is it difficult or easy to take scholarships from Thapar University?

RG
Rudra Ghose Posted On : August 7th, 2023
B.Tech from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (2020)

At Thapar University, scholarships are offered under 2 categories

  • Board score: Candidates whose board score is above 95% are eligible for this scholarship. Under this, the entire tuition and development fee is paid by the institute. Other scholarships under this category have a reduction of fees for a board score between 90–95% also. Students are eligible for this scholarship if they maintain an aggregate CGPA of 8.5 every year.
  • CGPA Score: This category of scholarship is for students who make it to the top 10% of the students in terms of CGPA in their respective branches. In the first year, you will be evaluated on the basis of your JEE Main score.

The level of difficulty in availing of these scholarships depends on the category you fall into. Comparatively, the first category is easier as you need to maintain a CGPA of 8.5 while for the second one, you need a CGPA of at least 9.5+ to consistently make it into the top 10% of students in your batch.

Which is best, ECE at Thapar University or CSE at Jaypee Noida?

SP
Shaguna Pandey Posted On : August 12th, 2021
B.Tech Computer Programming, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (2019)

CSE at JIIT is clearly better than ECE at Thapar. You must have a minimum JEE rank of 51,000 to get CSE at JIIT Noida.

There are no state quota, caste quota, or NRI quota at JIIT but Thapar offers a 50% quota for Punjab state students. This results in a superior quality of students at JIIT Noida than Thapar. Due to quotas and an increase in the number of seats, anyone can get admission at Thapar University.

If a student has a 300,000 rank in JEE Main, he will not be able to gain a seat anywhere, but if he is from Punjab, he may be able to secure a place in Electrical Engineering in Thapar. This explains how Thapar's situation has deteriorated.

JIIT will offer you great exposure which is actually required in CSE with regular industrial visits. CSE has more scope in terms of placements than ECE.

Can I change branch preference after first counselling at Thapar University?

SD
Shinjan Das Posted On : February 19th, 2024
B.E. in ECE from Thapar University

You need to wait for the spot round (in-person counseling) at Thapar University for that. You can’t change your branch preference in the first 4 rounds (which are all online rounds). But during the spot round, you’ll get a fresh paper to fill in your desired branches in the order of your preference. This is when you can reconsider your choices. If during the online counseling rounds you feel satisfied with the branch you are getting, you can freeze your seat. This won’t hamper your chances in the spot round, but it will provide you with a backup in case your desired branch(es) runs out of vacant seats by then.

What should I choose between IIIT Delhi (Indraprastha), LNMIIT Jaipur & Thapar University Patiala?

DB
Daboleena Banerjee Posted On : August 25th, 2021
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, The LNM Institute of Information Technology (2020)

IIIT Delhi is clearly the best choice out of the three options especially if we are talking about CSE. Your preference order should be the following.

IIIT Delhi (Indraprastha) > Thapar University > LNMIIT Jaipur

Cutoff: (IIIT D > Thapar University)

The quality of the students also has an effect on how the college performs and also in its rankings. The cutoff for CSE at IIIT Delhi is around 200-225+. Thapar University admits students with JEE Mains marks more than 170 for students’ outside Punjab and 150 marks for students from Punjab. The cutoff indicates IIIT D offers a better peer group.

Placements:

  • In terms of placements and internships, IIIT Delhi tops the list. The avg. package for the CSE branch in IIIT Delhi is around 15 lakhs per annum.
  • Overall avg package in Thapar University is around 8 lakhs per annum and for CSE Branch is around 10 lakhs per annum with a placement rate of 94 percent.
  • In LNMIIT Jaipur the avg packages are around 6 lakhs per annum.

Thpar has a great coding culture. However, based on student crowd, placements, etc. the best option among the given choices is IIITD.
