What is it like to be a 40 year old M.Tech student at IIT Madras?

SD
Souvick Das Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Software Engineer at Microsoft

My uncle joined MTech at IIT Madras at the age of 39 and was made to stay at Krishna Hostel like any other PG student. The only advantage he got was a single room while most of his batchmates got double or triple-occupancy rooms.

Having lost his touch with studying, he had his share of fears but once the rhythm was set in motion, he soared high in academics and was able to manage his time well. Initially l, he did miss his job and normal life as being a student seemed weird to him. But the rigor of the curriculum and the enthusiastic peers steered all his fears away.

He rarely interacted with UG students who preferred ignoring their seniors in general. The UG and PG students only met in common areas like the library, and open-air theater and interaction was minimal. However, there are exceptions everywhere as towards the end of his program, my uncle was able to befriend 2-3 UG students who were keen to discuss the opportunities and challenges for a civil engineer.

  • There is a fixed duration (3-4) of the BSc program which is absent in the case of the Upgrad course.
  • Your CV will be bestowed with an IIT tag, known worldwide while the Upgrad course is rarely known outside India.

How is the integrated BS-MS in physics program in IIT-Madras?

RM
Ritika Mukharjee Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM)

The integrated BS-MS 8’ Physics program offered at IIT Madras is a dual degree in reality. The program is a great success because it is under the umbrella of IIT Madras' excellent Physics department. This department is affiliated with CERN and LIGO and has approachable professors and a friendly ambiance for study.

One has to clear JEE to become eligible for this program. The cutoff keeps changing and this program has a small batch size of around 10-15 students. The small batch size is because the program has been newly launched and is still yet to be made known.

The peer group has geniuses from every culture and academic background. IMT might be a rank holder in Karnataka CET while the other may be a 98% in class 12th. There are dynamic discussions among the students and it’s more than one can ask for.

Additional features include INSPIRE scholarship of around INR 60000/- year. You even get the golden opportunity to attend the KVPY Vijyoshi camp.

Ultimately, this program is a dream come true for Physics lovers and is a better option than Engineering for them.

What are the placement prospects of a student pursuing a B.Tech in metallurgy and materials engineering in IIT Madras?

AB
Aarti Bora Posted On : March 30th, 2023
IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore

My friend graduated from IIT Madras a few months ago and was devastated by the placement scenario of her branch. It almost seems that only Electrical and Computer Science students were eligible for decent placements, rest all suffered.

Talking about Metallurgy specifically, he did not find a single core company visiting the campus for placements almost as if the branch was non-existent. He was told to maintain a good CGPA of 7-8+ for core roles but no core company visited.

In case you are looking for a high-paying non-core job, which is the case for most IITians, you will have to appear for several written and online exams not related to your specialization. You will have to make a good resume by including extra skills, developing your personality, and going the extra mile in your academics to achieve a high-paying job.

Concludingly, Metallurgy has little or no core job prospects so you will have to work hard to get non-core jobs.

Which institute is better for M.Sc. Physics IIT Kanpur or IIT Madras?

RP
Raveesha Pandey Posted On : July 30th, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
Both IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras are excellent institutes for M.Sc in Physics, considering the student is actually interested in learning the subject to the core.
The points below give a brief overview of IIT Madras, stating some of the advantages of choosing it over IIT Kanpur.
? Professors will help you to get involved in challenging projects during your course, with specializations in complex topics like cosmology, etc.
? The main motto of the faculties of IIT Madras is to build their students to at least a certain limit of knowledge, over anything else.
? Most of the professors have a solid foundation in advanced concepts of theoretical physics, for example, Prof. M V Satyanarayana, Prof. M Pattabiraman, Prof. V Balakrishnan, Prof. A Lakshminarayan, etc.
? Although the level of questions set during the exams at IIT Madras is always up to the mark, almost no students fail in the institute due to the teaching facilities offered throughout the year.
? Talking about the campus of IIT Madras, it is extremely beautiful, being close to the sea as well.
Therefore, although both the institutes are equally excellent, IIT Madras can be a better option for students interested in Physics, considering the points listed above.

What percentage of civil engineering students at IIT Madras end up taking core civil engineering jobs?

DB
Davdut Banerjee Posted On : July 20th, 2021
IIT Madras (2019)

The exact percentage is difficult to tell because the data is available only with the Training and Placement Cell of IIT Madras. The biggest problem with Civil Engineering is that you will not get any immediate opportunities in the same stream. So many of the students who need a job immediately with a good pay package usually shift to other streams.

It is not the case that people are not interested in pursuing core civil engineering jobs. But they want to study what can give them jobs immediately. Unfortunately, this is difficult in core civil engineering jobs. These jobs demand higher degrees which the undergraduate students lack and thus are not considered.

How are hostel rooms allocated in IIT Madras and what are the hostel rules and regulations?

TB
Tushar Banerjee Posted On : September 28th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

The rooms are allocated on the basis of year and program you are pursuing. First-year college students are housed in dormitories with double occupancy. You could receive a single, double, or triple room starting in your third year. Whereas all the PG students are provided with single rooms

The rooms are generously sized and equipped with LAN connections for internet use. With washing machines, urinals, and several toilet and bathing stalls, each hostel wing features a communal set of toilets that are used by about 8 rooms.

Few important rules and regulation that needs to be followed by the hostellers are as follows

  • Both within and beyond the campus, residents are expected to treat everyone with respect and fairness.
  • Institute Identity Cards must be carried by all residents at all times and shown upon request.
  • Before 11:00 p.m., all residents are required to return to their hostels. The relevant Warden may give permission for a late arrival.
  • The Hostel Office and/or Assistant Warden must be notified of any civil and electrical concerns for resolution.
  • Unauthorised, unauthorised, or pirated films should not be shown to the pupils.
  • Before granting a No Dues Certificate, the Hostel Office must verify the room inventory
  • Furniture and other fittings cannot be transported from one location to another.
  • Defacing of shelves, doors, windows, or walls is prohibited, including the tacking of posters. In the event of a violation, a fine proportionate to the damage will be assessed.
  • Ragging is a crime that will result in expulsion from the Institute and endorsement in the records, according to the Honourable Supreme Court's verdict.
  • It is completely forbidden to possess, use or consume alcohol, tobacco or narcotic narcotics on hostel property or to enter the building while inebriated. Expulsion/rustication from a hostel or institution may be a part of a disciplinary action.
  • No strange activities of any kind that disturb the neighbours should be done in the room.
  • Residents shall not engage in any unsavoury, anti-social, or nationalistic activity.
