I am in 2nd year civil engineering at NIT Jamshedpur. What is the right time to prepare for the IES?
One of my friends completed his BTech in civil engineering from NIT Jamshedpur recently. He also cleared the ESE in the final year by preparing for the 2nd year. All he did was devote around 5–6 hours a day for the next two years daily.
Here also mentored the following tips:
- Get the study materials for non-technical from any coaching institute and study them for an hour daily.
- Start with one subject at a time, most likely Math because it will help you for GATE preparation.
- For the technical papers, refer to handwritten notes of any coaching institute or refer to correspondence course materials
- Make a small group of 2-3 students in your hostel so that you are continuously encouraged. Set targets for the group to achieve and work hard.
- Monitor your process and keep a check on distractions.
- Utilize all the free time to study because civil students have a very light curriculum and so are free most of the time.
- Practice as much as you can.

How do I get 30+ LPA package from NIT Jamshedpur in the computer science branch?
It’s not likely possible to get a 30+ LPA package at NIT Jamshedpur or in fact any IIT. So if you have such a high goal, you can go for an offshore offer, which can go even up to 75+ LPA depending on where you get the job. Here are some ways to opt for an offshore offer
- Google APAC test : The Google APAC test is conducted in 4 rounds every year. If you clear their interview, you can work at the Google MTV office. Another way to grab the interview is to get good scores in Google Code Jam
- Facebook HackerCup : It’s a programming contest conducted by Facebook. If you score high, you are likely to be called for an interview.
- Works Applications : They hold several online programming contests for students from IITs, IIITs, NITs, BITS, UOH, JNTU, and other less popular institutes. If you perform well, you get to work at their Singapore office.
- HackerEarth, HackerRank : Some companies use this platform for recruitment. If you top in their contests, you can land interviews

What should be the preference order in NIT Jamshedpur Metallurgy, Civil, production for JoSAA Counseling?
One of my friends chose ProductionCivil and Metallurgy at NIT Jamshedpur. Honestly, the preference may vary from person to person depending on their career prospects and inclinations. However, I can certainly guide you to decide the right one
- If you are a Physics or Maths guy who wants to study Mechanical or is planning to pursue an MBA later then the right choice for you is Production Engineering
- If you are interested in Chemistry and want to pursue a research-based career in or outside India then go for Metallurgy.
- If you want to land a decent government job or prepare for UPSC, then Civil is the right option for you.
So the preference order in my opinion is Production>Metallurgy>Civil. Ultimately it’s your own preferences that will determine the choice.
What should be the preference order of NIT Jamshedpur CSE, NIT Jalandhar CSE, and NIT Patna CSE?
NIT JALANDHAR CSE should be prioritized over NIT JAMSHEDPUR CSE and NIT PATNA CSE. If you look at their placement, you'll see that there isn't much of a difference between these colleges when it comes to this branch. All you need is good infrastructure and a welcoming atmosphere; otherwise, sooner or later you will find yourself regretting your choice somewhere on campus. When discussing the infrastructure of these colleges, you must consider their NIRF ranking.
To be honest, NIT Patna's campus and facilities are fairly mediocre and unsatisfactory. Then there's NIT Jamshedpur, which is right next door. It, too, needs to improve significantly. However, because it is located in an industrial area, it attracts a large number of students who study Electrical, Mechanical, and other related fields.
Should I choose mechanical at Thapar University or metallurgy at NIT, Jamshedpur and Durgapur?
Both Mechanical from Thapar University and Metallurgy at NIT Durgapur are great options. However, if you want to attach a NIT tag to your degree, then NIT Durgapur is a great option.
The Metallurgy and Material Science branch at NIT Jamshedpur has a decent faculty pool with a mix of good and bad professors. Additionally, companies like Tata Steel, JCAPCPL, and many more visit during placements.

Which has the better campus life, NIT Durgapur or NIT Jamshedpur?
Well, both the colleges are in different states and both have their own set of reports, some good some bad. Though from an infrastructure point of view, NIT Jamshedpur is small and cozy whereas NIT Durgapur is quite beautiful and flourished in about 187 acres of land.
- The campus life at NIT Durgapur is really awesome. Apart from academics and infrastructure, it’s an NIT so you can understand it's pretty good.
- But if you really want to experience it, you should definitely join NIT Durgapur and enjoy the vast playgrounds, clean campus, and friendly environment.
- Though you can get some negative aspects but there is nothing wrong related to campus life.
Similarly, it goes for NIT Jamshedpur.
- Even though the infrastructure of NIT Jamshedpur is not at par but definitely the campus life is awesome here too. The students make the campus lively.
- You will get to see a vast and clean area with basketball, cricket and football ground.
- Though the facility of Wi-Fi is not provided but you will have sufficient speed and workstations to fulfill your needs.
- The mess food provided is of good quality.
- There are many places to hang out and inside the institute only. The cleanliness is very good; in fact, Jamshedpur is one of the cleanest cities of East India.
- The seniors are awesome and do cooperate and guide you if you face any issues.
Both the campus have good campus life and environment. But better contact someone who studies there and judge the authenticity and then choose between the two and definitely consider placement, faculty, and research before opting for either of them. The campus life at NIT Jamshedpur is quite good and you are not going to regret joining this institute.
How good is metallurgy in NIT Jamshedpur?
One of my friends who used to be a student in Jamshedpur says that all hostels of NIT Jamshedpur have equal value. The faculty is also experienced and good at teaching as far as the academic background is concerned. The faculty takes enthusiasm in its teaching and is also energetic. One of the teachers was not only the associate Dean but also the chief warden at the same time. There was also talk that he might just be the next Dean of the students’ welfare department.
The cultural students, technical festival, sports meet, and alumni meet consist of a lot of students from the metallurgy. ‘Technica’ is also a popular event for metallurgy students. There are also technical teams like Daksh, Drift, Phoenix, etc where you can work in.
