Which is the best department and subject in IIT Delhi for ESE preparation for civil engineering?

AS
Aditi Sengupta Posted On : April 5th, 2023
Civil Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

IIT Delhi's Civil Engineering department has a total of 7 branches namely

  1. Structural Engineering
  2. Geotechnical Engineering
  3. Transportation Engineering
  4. Environmental Engineering
  5. Water Resources Engineering
  6. Rock Engineering
  7. Construction Engineering and Management

The ones that I will recommend you not to join include - Structural, Geotechnical, Transport, and Water Resources. This is because you are planning to prepare for ESE which won’t be possible because of the demanding and rigorous curriculum of these branches.

Construction Engineering and Management is a good choice as the coursework is light in comparison to others. Rock Engineering is another good option but the future scope is limited because it’s not a major branch of Civil Engineering.

The most common choice among aspirants is Environmental Engineering with the least burden and great opportunities.

Can a student in textile engineer do a minor degree in Computer Science in IIT Delhi?

SM

B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (2020)

Top engineering colleges like IIT Delhi, NSIT, School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi, College of Art, Delhi, and even the famous Faculty of Management Studies have branched out from DCE. Major differences between these Engineering institutes include

  • Being the oldest, DTU has the largest alumni base ever more than NSIT and IIT Delhi.
  • All three have different statuses; DTU in itself is a university, NSIT is under the umbrella of Delhi University while IIT Delhi is an institution affiliated with the central government.
  • The companies visiting these institutes are similar in terms of roles and packages offered with DTU and IIT Delhi students getting offers from companies like McKinsey, Bain, etc. while NSIT students getting offers from Tech giants like Facebook, Google, and Microsoft.
  • IITians enjoy the brand name that comes attached to their degrees. This brand name is superior to that of DCE.

Ultimately students prefer IITs over other engineering colleges mainly because they are government bodies and have earned global recognition.

What is the value of a PhD from IIT Delhi?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 5th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

IIT Delhi Ph.D is considered valuable both academically and professionally. It portrays a high level of expertise and knowledge in a specific field of study. It also has a rich research culture and thus its Ph.D. degree holds quite a value

A Ph.D. degree from anywhere is just a means of opening more opportunities and its value is determined by how well you avail those opportunities and making the most out of them. Similarly, a Ph.D. from IIT Delhi surely opens numerous doors based on your area of research, research method, research advisor, and various other factors.

A well-known professor, Dr. Naveen Garg, CSE, completed his Ph.D. from IIT Delhi and is considered one of the smartest professors in the CSE department. He completed his B.Tech and Ph.D. in Computer Science from IIT Delhi, was a postdoctoral researcher at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Informatik, Germany, and became a professor at IIT Delhi in 1998. He largely contributed to the Design and analysis of approximation algorithms for NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems arising in network design, scheduling, routing, facility location, etc. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Science, Bangalore, and was awarded the SS Bhatnagar Award for Mathematical Sciences in 2016.

If he can make so much out of his Ph.D. anyone with the right mindset and determination can!

IIT Delhi Mtech Computer Technology vs IIT Hyderabad Mtech CSE. Which is better for placements in product based software companies?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : May 9th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

Both IIT Delhi MTech Computer Technology and IIT Hyderabad Mtech CSE are excellent engineering programs. However, my personal suggestion is IIT Delhi Ctech. Here’s why

  • IIT Delhi offers the best opportunities considering its rank in the top 3 IITs
  • IIT Delhi holds the Institute of Eminence Status
  • The brand value of IIT Delhi is much higher than the new IIT Hyderabad.
  • IIT Delhi being old has a very beautiful campus with great natural beauty. IIT Hyderabad on the other hand has a newly established campu that is still under construction.
  • A few major companies don’t visit new IITs like IIT Hyderabad. IIT Delhi, on the other hand, is visited by top IT companies like Amazon, Flipkart, Microsoft, Ola, Uber, Tower Research, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Intel, Qualcomm, Samsung, etc

The only disadvantage you might face at IIT Delhi Is the intense competition with CS students as they are all top rankers.

I don’t mean to demean IIT Hyderabad but it’s a fact that the opportunities and exposure that IIT Delhi will offer cannot be compared to IIT Hyderabad.

  • If you want to secure a good package and role at a Software Company, 8.5+ is more than enough
  • If you want to opt for a department change, especially into EE, CSE or aim for higher studies, then you will have to attain at least 9.5+

Does an engineering physics graduate from IIT Delhi get high packages?

DS
Dipti Sinha Posted On : April 5th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (2022)

Engineering Physics is one of the most intriguing research-oriented branches of IIT Delhi. Students of this branch get the excellent opportunity to work in top research centers like ISRO, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. Eminent scientists and professors testify to the branch's credibility so need not worry about placements.

However, this branch is highly challenging and should be opted for only if you are serious about making a career out of it. The curriculum is challenging with high-level mathematics.

Students from most branches end up working in MNCs and leave soon because they are not satisfied. However, the Engineering Physics branch provides excellent job prospects. I know someone who chooses this branch over CS and Electrical despite his AIR being 10.

This branch requires serious commitment and one has to be truly devoted to the field. The faculty is not that good in comparison to other branches and this might make you suffer initially, but once you start understanding the practical concepts, it will become one of the most interesting courses you have ever come across.

Which is better at IIT Delhi, electrical engineering or mathematics and computing?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : April 5th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

Both the branches, Electrical and MnC have great scope in terms of employment in both core and non-core jobs. However, most high-paying jobs are given to CS students with the Electrical students securing average packages only. Here is when MnC comes to your rescue. It provides opportunities for CS jobs as well as Finance and Analytics, both being highly paid and demanded sectors. The branch attracts huge companies like Goldman Sachs.

Anyone with a deep interest in Mathematical concepts and theoretical concepts will find this program very intriguing. The curriculum comprises core math topics like discrete mathematics, combinatorics, algebra, and statistics as well as some CS topics. Electrical on the other hand, has topics like power electronics and electronic circuits which focus on practical implementation rather than theoretical concepts.

Department-wise, Electrical is better because of the quality of the faculty pool it has. MnC constantly faces issues related to the quality of teaching and faculty. The faculty in the Maths department is excellent but when it comes to teaching CS electives, it does not impart knowledge better than core CS professors.

How is computer science taught in IIT Delhi?

SM
Subhashree Modak Posted On : April 5th, 2023
B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (2020)

Computer Science is taught at IIT Delhi through the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). The department offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in Computer Science and Engineering. Some key highlights of the course are listed below:

  • The entire exam and grading depend on the concerned professor. He is the one to decide how the 100 marks will be awarded and what marks your assistance theoretical papers will carry.
  • One is expected to learn programming languages on their own through the coding assignment
  • Functional language is well taught by some extremely learned professors and their lectures are very interesting
  • Some of the most eminent professors who conduct lively classes are Parag Singla in Machine Learning, Mausam in Artificial Intelligence, and Vinay Rebeiro in Networks. Naveen Garg in Data Structures and Algorithms.
  • Usually, most of the lectures in this course are very interesting and cover most topics.
  • Assignments are given due importance and carry enough marks to evaluate your understanding of the subject and its implementation in real life. One is expected to complete their assignments on their own or work in groups.
  • Most programming courses have no theoretical or practical exam and evaluation of them is done solely based on assignments.
  • The lectures of most professors are available on NPTEL

Like every other course, this course too has some exceptionally lazy professors who are least interested in teaching. But they are only a few in comparison to other professors.
