How do IIIT-Hyderabad students prepare for programming competitions? Who encourages them in this field?
The main driving force in IIIT Hyderabad for encouraging students to prepare for programming competitions is the amazing coding cultus. The faculty is only responsible for delivering the core concepts. The assignments given to students are very challenging and help a lot in developing interest in programming as well as strengthening your time limits, memory limits, and solving SPOJ level questions.
Additionally, IIIT Hyderabad has a competitive programming club that regularly conducts sessions and even provides related study material. This club plays a major role in encouraging students to prepare for programming competitions. There are weekly lab sessions too
The overall environment keeps you up to date with recent developments in the field and motivates you toward programming competitions.
Is CSE faculty at IIIT Hyderabad good?
My friend studies in IIIT-Sricity which shared some faculties with IIIT Hyderabad initially as it was under its mentorship.
Generally, you can find both good and bad professors here. But the bad here does not mean underqualified, but arrogant ones. By no means will you find a professor who is underqualified and their extensive knowledge is their biggest weapon. Some of them are as great as Prof Raj Reddy, a Turing award winner which is considered a Nobel Prize or Oscar for Computer Science. So you can get an idea of the level of faculties here.
In reality, most students at IIIT Hyderabad are dependent on peers or seniors more than their faculty. So you can stop bothering about the parity of the professors here.
What is the lateral entry for IIIT Hyderabad?
Lateral Admission means getting admission in the mid of the session from another college. Many students pursuing BE or BTech in other colleges get lateral admission into IIIT Hyderabad in the second year. For this, they need to go through a separate admission process. This process includes a written entrance exam followed by an interview.
Moreover, Lateral Entry students are offered a very limited variety of streams like
- CSD: B.Tech + M.S. in Computer Science and Engineering.
- ECD: B.Tech + M.S. in Electronics and Communication Engineering.
Also, it’s important to note that Lateral Entry gets admission in the second year only. So irrespective of which year you belonged to, you will have to study again from the second year.
This mode of admission gives a second chance to those who couldn’t clear the exam initially.
How difficult is a branch change from ECE to CSE at IIIT Hyderabad?
The branch change solely depends on the branch's strength. You have to score well in both CSE and ECE to make them believe you are talented and can handle all challenges smoothly. Getting equally good scores in subjects from both branches might improve your chances of branch change. However, sometimes issues related to batch strength become a big hindrance to branch change. According to the policy, the branch you are shifting, or the branch you are shifting, if they get their new strengths violated by 10% of the total seats in that branch, they are not allowed to change. But this is something that is beyond your control. I had a friend who could change his branch to CSE with an 8.8 CGPA while another failed to get a branch change despite a perfect 10.
Don’t let this demotivate you and concentrate on remaining at the top of your branch.
Where can I get assignments given to CSE students at IIIT Hyderabad?
IIIT Hyderabad assignments are usually released in a platform called Moodle which has been created solely for the purpose of sharing study materials among the IIIT Hyderabad students. To access this platform you need to be an IIIT Hyderabad student and have connection to IIIT Hyderabad LAN and credentials.
It’s difficult to procure these assignments on the internet as they are available on the institute's intranet only. So, if you aren’t a student here, try getting help from one.
Why did Apple choose IIIT Hyderabad to recruit over the topmost IITs and NITs?
Coders at IIIT Hyderabad are experts in their field which is why IT giants like Apple are choosing its campus for placements over well known IITs and NITs.
At IIIT Hyderabad, CSE/ECE students study topics specific to their course since the 1st semester itself. In IITs and NITs, however, CSE/ECE students start focusing on their particular field from the 2nd year. First year students remain busy with Chemistry, Engineering drawing, etc. which are of no use in their branch.
Brand name is secondary and thus, IIIT Hyderabad students, because of their enhanced expertise in coding, etc. are getting offers from brands like Apple.

How good is the MSIT program in IIIT Hyderabad? How are the placements?
Placements for MSIT programs at IIIT Hyderabad are not that great. The placement packages and profiles offered in the placement drive do not match the skill you learn in the program. If you are choosing these programs only because of placement, it will be better to consider other options. I know a little bit about this program as I have some friends who are pursuing it.
- MSIT program at IIIT Hyderabad is project-oriented. If you are from CSE from your B.Tech or BE then there are options for good placements in reputed MNCs.
- MSIT faculty is different from the general faculty of IIIT Hyderabad for MTech or MS.
- However, the management and the placement officials are not that cooperative for placements.
So, consider all these factors carefully and talk to the students pursuing the course if necessary, before making any decision. Hope it helps.

- All the major IT giants visit IIIT Hyderabad for placements. Microsoft, Apple, and Facebook are some of them.
If you want an excellent career in CS, IIIT Hyderabad may be the right place for you!
What should I choose between IIT rank 1300-1500 (predicted rank) , IIIT Hyderabad CSE and BITS Pilani (Score - 369)?
Your rank is pretty good and you are likely to get both, IIIT Hyderabad CSE and BITS Pilani. However, had I been in your place, I would have chosen IIIT Hyderabad. There are a number of reasons that support my choice.
