Which is better, BITS-Goa vs BIT Mesra?
A senior of mine from school is an alumnus of BITS Goa and he has all the respect for the institution. He has told me that BIT Mesra is a good place for someone who would like to pursue CSE, ECE. The placement is also pretty good there from what he has heard.
Coming to BITS Goa, it is a tier 1 Indian engineering institution. Most of the students from Indian engineering colleges practice computer programming for becoming computer engineers. There are packages of 5-50 LPA, depending on the skills of the applicants. These companies do not look for academic credentials. They are only interested in the GitHub and TopCoder profiles of the job applicants.
A lot of the BIT alumni end up being managers in industries, based on hard work and luck. The package would be around 5-15 LPA. Unlike in the previous case, these companies are heavily dependent on the academic credentials of the job applicants.
BIT Mesra is a 3 tier engineering institute. Most of the students who have completed their education from this institute end up working in working as employees in the IT companies that are service-based with packages of 3-4 LPA.

- Some hostels are newly constructed while some are a bit old. However, the hostel facility is fine. The mess food is average and the hostel fee is quite affordable.
- The faculty is good but you will have to put in extra effort from your side.
- You can approach your seniors for guidance and preparation tips. Almost all the CSE students are involved in online competitions and the competitiveness is quite high.
- During 2022, the average package for the CSE branch at BIT Mesra stood at INR 19.27 LPA, and the highest package stood at INR 58.33 LPA. Amdocs, BYJU’s, Cognizant, Wipro, Infosys, Daffodil Software, etc. visited the campus for placements.
- BIT Mesra has a reputation of its own which will aid you in getting a job at a well-known brand.
Cons-
- Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the curriculum, studies become overwhelming at times. You may also end up giving less time to your CSE majors and coding.
- You might not be able to choose certain electives during the 7th and 8th semesters due to the lack of faculty available for the same.
- Semester exams are planned without any gaps in between and this can be immensely pressurizing.
BIT Mesra is a well-renowned institution and a CSE from there will definitely add value to your profile. However, if you get a CSE at DCE, BITS Pilani, Jadavpur University, or the top three NITs, go for these institutions.
What is the criteria for changing of branch in BIT MESRA after first year? Is it difficult or easy?
The branch change policy solely relies on the CGPA. The candidate should have scored an 8.5 or higher in the semester. The CSE branch has tight competition, so seat vacancies are limited here. In such cases, you need to have a 9+ GPA to secure a seat at the CSE branch.
You need to be consistent in your studies to get an 8 or higher in your semesters. It is a bit challenging for a newcomer, as they need to adapt to the new environment by giving equal importance to their studies. So be persistent and attend all classes and labs; then you can easily change your branch
Should I go for BIT Mesra for CSE/IT?
Yes, you should certainly go for BIT Mesra CSE or IT if you weren’t able to make it to the top IITs and NITs. Here is a brief analysis of the institute based on common aspects
- Education: The quality of education is average given the fact that some professors are experienced while some must conduct monotonous classroom sessions.
- Campus: BIT Mesra has a beautiful campus surrounded by lush greenery. The flowers, rivers, temples, and beauty make it the perfect place for nature lovers.
- Fee Structure: BIT Mesra BTech fees are higher than IITs and NITs because it’s a private engineering college. The total fee stands at 14.42 Lakhs which is much lower than most private engineering colleges though.
- Clubs: CS and IT students can upgrade their skills through various clubs that conduct regular workshops and contests. ACM focuses on competitive coding.
- Extracurricular activities: The institute does not focus on academics alone and students are given freedom to pursue their choice of extracurriculars through a number of clubs.
- Campus life: BIT Mesra has a very vibrant campus life and students celebrate all major festivals. A number of events are organized such as Bitotsav, pantheon, Vajra, sports meet, etc.

My brother is a B.Tech IT student at BIT Mesra. Here is a list of what you can expect from this 4 year course at BIT Mesra-
- The CSE and IT batches have different sections.
- If you work hard and prepare well, you can intern at companies like Gsechs , Amazon, Directi, Microsoft, etc. during your third year, through on campus internship drives.
- IT students get the opportunity to be placed in top IT firms like Amazon, Flipkart, Microsoft, Snapdeal, among others.
- IT is the best and the most chill branch of BIT Mesra.
- You will have ample time for research work and projects.
- If you work hard, you can achieve a good CGPA as an IT student at BIT Mesra.
- DC, a software which offers 13 Mbps download speed, is a great bonus while you are at the BIT campus.
- However, fees at BIT Mesra are a lot higher than the NITs.
Thus, if the fee is not an issue for you, I would recommend you to join BIT Mesra for your B.Tech IT degree.

My cousin attended both colleges. He left BIT Mesra to join JECRC. Here is his insight for the institutes.
Comparison:
- BIT Mesra has better faculties, better brand name, better opportunities in terms of placements as well as higher studies. But unfortunately, the campus is not that good. There is a lack of cooperation from the university and less crowd.
- In JECRC, you will get a good college experience. After all, all that matters, in the end, is your skills.
- If you don’t have any interest in socializing and want a life with a brand name to carry forward, BIT Jaipur is definitely the better alternative.
For CSE particularly, the preference order should be BIT Jaipur >> JECRC.
Which college should one take up for architecture, BIT Mesra or NIT, Trichy and why?
My uncle is a successful architect and has the experience of employing many architects. He shared his experience stating that architecture students of both BIT Mesra and NIT Trichy are Unfortunately both the institutions are engineering colleges where architecture is considered equal because both are engineering colleges with Architecture as just one of the many specializations offered by the institute. None of these institutes are specialized in this field so the students study in a more engineering-oriented ambiance. They lack the ability to think independently of constraints imposed by engineering abilities available in India. I recommend you pursue Architecture from an institution that has Architecture as its flagship course like CEPT or SPA.
Nevertheless, comparing Architecture from BIT Mesra and NIT Trichy, I will say the former has a better crowd and opportunities than the latter. Both are somewhat at similar levels and it's hard to make a direct comparison. It's that students from BITS Mesra are better exposed so they make better Architects than NIT Trichy students.
